Overpaid for both guys, almost no room for a winger now, but I guess that’s how it goes.

Exactly. As I’ve said in the other threads, this is free angency, you almost always have to overpay to get the guys you want. I think the Pens overpaid by about 500k, but that was probably the difference between getting him and not getting him.

There aren’t any wingers this year. We weren’t going to get Kovy, period and end of story. After him, it’s a ton of 35+ guys that aren’t worth much and won’t improve our team.
These two d-men are going to make an immediate positive impact.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
They paid Colby Armstrong 3 million for 3 years to go to the Leafs…that ought to tell you something.

It’s this thing that happens to you when you work for the Leafs for too long. Apparently Army was Burke’s #1 priority for today. Seems odd, but it’s a good (albeit overpaid) piece of the puzzle.
Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.
COLBY!
Have to be Happy for Colby! He’s just a great guy with a new family so to sign for that much? Who cares, I say Kudos to Colby!

Ray Whitney, Kariya, Afinegenov, or Frolov? Prospal even? Trade for Sharp? I dunno, it’s not ideal but they can’t go in with the wingers they have, period.

but they can’t go in with the wingers they have, period.
Really? They were fifth in the league in goals scored. I don’t think the need for a winger is as drastic as it is being made out to be. Top 5 sits well with me.
Put on your dancin' shoes.
The only reason we were in the top 5 was Sid. If he can’t duplicate the 51 goals again, plus assuming a callup can replace Guerin, we are top 10 at best.
Sid scored approximately 1 in 5 goals so saying we were only top 5 because of him is also a bit misleading. It’s not like he was producing the same percentage as Kovy was in ATL.
I don’t think it matters a lick how teams play Crosby. He will adjust by years end. A team may be able to stifle him for a 7 game series but I don’t see them slowing him for an entire season. Also, don’t you think other teams started playing him differently towards the second half of this year as well, and he only produced more.
Put on your dancin' shoes.
look, I dont want to be one of those fans that bitches about everything. I have total faith in Mr. Shero as evidenced by my avatar/icon. But I will still say we should have stopped the D-train after ZM and then focused on a winger. You don’t know how many goals a player will put up. Yes, Malkin may rebound, and Sid may score 50 again, but Sid also has missed a lot of games over the years. If he gets hurt and Malkin doesn’t play like 08-09 Malkin, then we are in trouble.
Just for the record I don’t think you are one of those fans that bitch about everything. Your argument is well thought out and presented in a manner that doesn’t involve calling me a moron. I just think that the need for a winger is overstated and wanted to get the debate going.
Put on your dancin' shoes.
Let’s also keep in mind, we are losing Gonchar’s points. Neither member of M&M is an “offense first” D-man. We are really betting on Letang or Gogo to score some goals
If we need offense:
Plan A: Stick Malkin on Staal’s wing (not the other way around)
Plan B: Stick Malkin on Sid’s wing.
Plan C: Go get a winger at the deadline.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
There’s room for a winger. It’ll just have to be an internal promotion from WBS I suppose.

Letestu and Tangradi for me. Go with something like -
Kunitz – Crosby – Tangradi
Malkin – Staal – Duper/Talbot
Cooke – Letestu – Kennedy
Rupp – Adams – Talbot/Godard
Forwards should be fine and that’s if we can’t sign anyone else for around $2 mil
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
That looks about right except….
Kunitz – Crosby – Duper
Malkin – Staal – Tangradi
Cooke – Letestu – Kennedy
Rupp – Adams – Talbot
Godard
Duper and Kunitz were great on Sid’s line last year. If Tangradi (that’s a big if) get moved to a top 6 role, he’ll be with Geno and Staal…I don’t think they want to leave Sid with a guy that’s unproven.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
That’d work too but to be completely honest, I think I might WANT an unproven guy with Sid. Here’s why. Sid is a playmaker in his own world, there’s nobody else like him in the league. Getting a proven scorer is fine, but they won’t be used to how Sid plays.
Putting an unproven talent like Tangradi there would be good – he’s not used to anyone else in the NHL, so having him adjust his game just to be with Sid may just work.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Good point and it would definitely boost the kid’s confidence (wait…is Tangradi older than Sid?)

Never mind, Tangradi is two years younger than Sid. But yeah, anyways, what a huge confidence boost that would be for Tangradi…don’t see it happening though.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
I would like to at least TRY it. If it doesn’t work out all that well then fine, move Tangradi to the 2nd line with Malkin & Staal like you said. But I think he deserves a chance to play with Sid and plus, there’s some time to experiment in the preseason
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Once again, another good point.
I don’t see why they wouldn’t at least try, but don’t be surprised if the Pens are hesitant to put Tangradi there permanently.

If I remember correctly, they played a bit together in the preseason last year and Tangradi looked quite good beside Sid. (some shared points on goals etc)

I caught the interview. He was put on the spot with the new show they have on at 2 pm on Pens radio through the summer (excellent by the way) and said Sid because Sid plays a north south game and he does best in that game and likes to charge the net, figuring with Sid if you keep up and play north south with your stick on the ice, the puck will find you.

Cup Parade
Raising the banner
Beating the Flyers
Watching Sid score 50+
Another 3-goal, game 6 comeback series win
Don’t get me wrong. I’m excited, but we can only speculate how today’s moves will turn out. This will sound judgmental, I’m sure, but one problem I sensed last year was that expectations were so high that not enough people were enjoying the ride, so to speak. As your fanpost shows, there have been lots of great moments over the last year.
The Pens will be back.
by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 2, 2010 12:14 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, I forgot about the Parade and the Banner…..
But being at the cusp…you know, seeing only the new guys’ potential, instead of their flaws is kind of exhilerating. I mean, people are talking about how we could possibly have the best D corp in all of the East and we already have the best group of centers in the league so…maybe I’m just a little to excited for October.
But you’re right, there are a lot of moments from the last year + half a month that have been better than today…but that’s only a handful.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
It sounds like a lot
But I also think it’s money well worth spent. VERY solid defenseman that can also set plays up nicely. Extremely high character guy that’s easy to work with. I’d rather spend on the defensemen that are worth is as opposed to some overrated forwards.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Me too.
Pretty good analysis of the FA situation. Maybe it was a blessing in disguise for the Pens that the depth at wing was horrible this year. That way there are no temptations on offense for the Pens to go for.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
While people are saying, “there are no good wingers we can afford this year” do you realize that by overpaying for Martin and Michalek, we will not have the cap room for anybody next year, or even the year after? there’s now 9mil a year locked up in these two. Our D looks like this now:
Martin 5mil
Michalek 4mil
Orpik 3.75?
Letang 3.5?
Gogo 1.33? if i remember their cap hits correctly
So far so good. Remember for the regular season, is exactly what we need. For playoffs , there’s room for change. Shero knows what he is doing. Burke is off his rocker, and has a lot of money to play with.
I still think this was a pretty expensive pick up. I hope it doesn’t pan out like Wade Redden in New York.

Nah, I’ll tell it like it is when it comes to this sort of stuff. I don’t think I mind having Paul Martin on the team but I’m not a fan of the expense.

Yeah, I mentioned earlier today that I think Martin would be a good pickup. But, I don’t Think I would have signed him for this much. Oh well though, like I said above I really don’t feel the pressure to sign a winger so what else were they going to do with the cash.
Put on your dancin' shoes.
Well they’ve been in talks with Hamhuis for a while now. Perhaps even Gonchar again. I mean, what he’s getting in Ottawa isn’t much more than what the Pens are giving Martin per year.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com and twitter.
the real issue was age. Shero didn’t want to commit to more than 2 for Gonch. but surprisingly signed 4 and 5 year contracts for members of the “non-core”
I think some of it was impulse to replace Gonch.
35+
If Gonch left after 2 years Pens are on the hook for the last year no matter what since he is over 35, the 2 new guys are under 35 so the rule doesnt apply to them

Another thing to consider with this signing is that it weakens a team which the Penguins had huge problems with last season. The Devils are a significantly lesser team without Martin.

Who will it be? Or who SHOULD it be? Pairings now could be Orpik-Letang, shutdown duo of Martin-Michalek, the Gogo and ?
We have technically $3.4million in cap space, which is really like a little over 2. Do we resign Eaton or McKee, try to keep Leopold, give the spot to Lovejoy in attempt to get a fairly low priced winger or someone else?

Yes. We actually had 12.4 going in but they were figuring it about 11, because you need to have around 1 million in order to make moves during the season.

we had 11.1 going in, and just spent 9
True. If they decide to bite the bullet and send Godard to waivers/minor leagues that’ll be $750k saved as well….

Lovejoy will be in the pairings this year with who? Who knows hopefully not GoGo because that’d be too weak but thats what it may be.
We have Tangradi who will be on there, Letestu, and ALSO Pierro-Zabotel whos a pretty solid gritty playmaker who played with E Kane in the WHL probably won’t be on the roster but maybe sooner than later. Not sure if the Pens resigned Connor yet??
Staal NEEDS to be on the 2nd line with Malkin. FACT.
We still have 2+ in cap space a lot better than Philly’s >600,000 soo we should be fine

False. Staal NEEDS to stay where the hell he is.

How do you figure? Staal looked great when he played with Malkin and theres a void on the 2nd line. Unless the Pens pick up Afinogenov or Kariya then Staal needs to go the 2nd and have Letestu run the 3rd line.

I think its a good indicator not saying that it will work 100% but its worth a shot. And I’m also confident in Letestu’s ability to run the 3rd line he can score and hes a big body. We put ourselves close the ceiling so we need our young boys to show up and no better way than this. Malkin isn’t going to do it all by himself I don’t care if everyone is putting the “we need wingers” talk behind because of the D signings but the fact is if Malkin plays with Talbot/Dupuis/Letestu/Connor thats not a solid 2nd line. A Malkin-Staal-Kariya is strong. A Cooke-Letestu-Kennedy line is still good

Letestu is like 5’11, 190 — not a big body.

Letestu can easily jump up to 200 lbs he’s done it before so he could actually put on more weight. 5’11" isn’t that short. Matt Cooke and Kennedy are BOTH 5’11" and Kennedy weighs 185 wet. So if Letestu jumps to 200+ he’d be bigger than Kennedy (which he is now) and the same size as Cooke. So for a 3rd liner how would you say hes not a big body? Or are you just saying our 3rd line is small (excluding Staal)?
If I led anyone on to think I thought Letestu was massive well I apologize but he does have an NHL frame hes no Tangradi whos massive and you can’t deny that.
Ya I doubt Kariya would drop to 1.25 give or take but how do you know that the Pens system works best with Staal and Malkin at centre? Didn’t it work well when they were together as well? Its worth a shot no hockey lineup is permanent.
by Geno McFleury on Jul 3, 2010 1:30 AM EDT up reply actions
hes a big body
No he’s not…the trio of Cooke, TK, and Le test tube would be an awfully small one.
I think the developments today almost force the Pens to put Malkin on Staal’s wing, but it’s going to really hurt us in the long run. Part of what makes us an elite team is the 1-2-3 punch down the middle. I think Shero tries to sign a winger tomorrow…maybe Guerin.

Well, he did say in his press conference today that the Pens would be looking for a low cost, one year deal type of winger…the term “sit back” also came in that sentence though.
Although Shero didn’t really connect that to Billy G, that sounds exactly like him.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
What about this for pairings:
1st: Orpik-Letang
2nd: Michalek-Gogo
2nda: Martin-Lovejoy
Or we could try to make a shutdown pair, sort of like Scuderi/Gill used to be
Martin-Letang
Orpik-Michalek (SHUTDOWN)
Goligoski-Lovejoy.
I agree Staalsy should move up to line 2. Pens just plain and simply can’t afford a decent top 6 winger with their remaining cash. With how little money they have currently, I think it means Tangradi or another WB/S Pen moves up……
So forwards should look something like:
Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Talbot-Staal-Malkin
Cooke-Letestu?-Kennedy
Rupp-Adams-Tangradi?

Is Lovejoy in there at 750k….I still think the Pens could get a cheap winger or re-sign one of their D men….Guerin? Maybe.

Crazy year so far!
Blackhawks are getting WEAKER (literally) and the Devils got Volchenkov. With our pickups, I think the Pens are easily one of the top teams in the league in terms of overall potential to win the Cup. D to help out in front of Fleury, D to help move the puck up the ice, D to help in the offensive zone. Let’s face it, our O was good, not great, but good. We have some of the best players in the world. This team, IMO, is set up better than our Cup team from a few years back. This is setting up a huge playoff year next season playing against, potentially, Philly and Washington! Then, we squash Vancouver in the Finals 4-2!

True, true!
Here is where I think their problem lies. Yeah, lots of their core is still there; however, you take Big Buff out of the equation in this past season’s playoffs and I don’t think the Hawks get to the finals. Without him in the lineup, the paints a HUGE bullseye on the back of KANE and TOEWS for the likes of Pronger to track down and, well, try and destroy. Buff creates space and is a playoff guy. Will be interesting, either way, to see how it works out. For me, it’s good to see the Hawks back as a contender.

Random thought ...
From everything we heard, Shero was simply talking to Hamhuis, not specifically entering negotiations. I’m beginning to wonder if it wasn’t just Hamhuis waiting to see what other offers he’d get (i.e. Vancouver), but Shero also wanted to see who else might be interested before he made a firm offer to Hamhuis.
I dunno. It just crossed my mind, and this is one of those days where everything I think either comes out of my mouth or ends up on the page/screen.
Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.
It still sucks bad that we gave the Flyers a 3rd round pick for absolutely nothing.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
If “absolutely nothing” is almost a week of negotiating time to get in the mind of a key free agent, and make contingency plans to contact Michalek immediately at 12 noon (which they wouldn’t have done if they thought Hamhuis would have signed), then yes I agree.
Shero learned the lesson of dragging his feet on Hossa. And he fixed it. So it cost a 3rd round pick. That’s hardly a big chip to deal away for either A)overpaying for someone or B) losing out on the best players available.

Good analysis there, Hooks. I didn’t think about that. Even though it seemed like we were the only one that made a serious offer to Big Z, we may have been too late if Shero was waiting on Hammer.

Next Step: Trade Kunitz??
Kunitz is expected to make 3.8 miilion this year and 4.0 million the next. That is too much in my opinion. If they trade him they at least 5.8 million in cap space to try to get a winger or acquire one in a trade for Kunitz.
Oh, the Volchenkov deal could mean the end for Kovalchuk in New Jersey. Parise is due for an extension soon. Volchenkov, Tallinder, Kovalchuk and Parise? May be too much. But who knows. I love what we did today. The wing position is our only weakness. I think trying to trade Kunitz could be a way to go as well as Tangradi showing some production this upcoming season if he gets a chance. The Martin and Michalek signings make up for Scuderi and Gill leaving last year. Plus, both of these guys a younger than Gonch, Scuderi and Gill which is a positive. I read a quote a couple of years a go where Mario said hockey is a young man’s game.
Just curious, who is out there that will want to take on the Kunitz contract?
Ultimately, I’m still happier paying Kunitz that money, as he at least gives us something, than I would have been if we were still throwing it away on Whitney.

Trade Kunitz to who though? And for what return? There are almost no teams who could take him on, or want to. Plus, I think I’m the only person who appreciates what Psycho Kunitz does on a line with Sid. He may not put up huge offensive numbers but you can be assured, Sid is a much happier man when Kunitz is out there with him.

His salary is a bit of a problem, but he’s pretty much the best guy we have and he’s worked well with Sid and Duper…that line actually looked awesome when Billy G was out at times this year.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
I agree — I don’t think we should trade one of our best wingers. He has a bad contract, but we’re better off with him than without him. He’s a hard worker who does all the little things right in addition to having scoring talent. Last year he was playing injured for months, so he’s likely to have a better year next year.
I’m tired of hearing of the complaint of no wingers for Sid and Geno. I’m just suggesting this because the 3.8 million would free up cap space to 5.8 million. I think the winger position gets better if Tangradi produces to his potential. Great Centers. Solid Defense. Really Good Goalie. The wingers aren’t horrible. Dupuis and Kunitz can score at least 20-25 goals. It isn’t 35-40 from great wingers but it isn’t a reason that keeps us from winning games
Trading Kunitz isn’t a horrible idea, but it isn’t a reality because I don’t know who we’d trade him for. Honestly, if someone is going to get traded, I could see Talbot getting packaged with a draft pick for someone…
Not sure why we’d try to trade our best winger in Kunitz.

Exactly. If Kunitz was like out 3rd or 4th best winger, then hell yeah let’s make a trade.
That’s why, as much as I love the guy, could see Talbot being packaged and shipped out of Pitt, along with a pick, for a winger.

Thank you. The only problem, is that it may not be possible with the guys we got today. If the Pens go after a cheap winger (like they say they are looking into), however, it’s back to the 3C’s and lots of people @ Pensburgh won’t be too happy about that.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
maybe not… enough of us are fairly critical of putting either Geno or Staalsy on the wing.
If anyone can pull this off, it’s Ray Shero. I think he has a trick or two up his sleeve to get us a competent winger. Given our commitments to the center position, we already have to be used to a revolving door policy to fill our wing spots unless someone from our farm team can grow into it.
Besides, that 11.1 million we have to spend this offseason is not inclusive of an extra one million for us to have some wiggle room for a mid season trade. We can also waive or minor Godard, I think he’s due 3 quartes of a million…
I'm 21 now... I still feel 20 and I still feel way too old.
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
Part of the trouble is that the “strong down the center” model is unique to Pittsburgh, and it’s somewhat unproven. We won a Cup with it, but I’m pretty sure that until we win five in a row, people will complain about lack of wingers. People also seem to forget that when you start putting money into wingers, other pieces get weaker — like the third line, or defense, or goalie, or even the second line wingers. I really like Shero’s Sid-Geno-Staal-Fleury model, and I’m happy to put up with the winger issues.
Canada Rocks. Except for the Ottawa Senators.
I just read a report that said the pens are negotiating with John Madden. Madden is a center who takes faceoffs and is a former selke winner. I think if that happens it would give more reason to move Malkin to the wing, Staal to the second line center, Talbot to third line center and Madden as the fourth line center.
Talbot would be 4th because Madden’s defense would be more of an asset. Thus, giving him more minutes.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
with Madden we’ll still have our depth down the middle for 3 lines. But I still think that’s a step back from Staalsy as our 3rd center. we can so better with our limited cap.
I'm 21 now... I still feel 20 and I still feel way too old.

But I still think that’s a step back from Staalsy as our 3rd center.
Pretty big step back. Going from a guy who has a lot to improve on, but is already a Selke nominee to a guy who’s already over the hill.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
So do you think it will happen? I’d like to see it. Some people say Geno on the wing wouldn’t work out. It would be better to try it then have people complain about the lack of wingers.
Honestly, the organization doesn’t care what the fans think. As long as they think they’re doing their best to win hockey games and, ultimately, the Cup, they’re satisfied. If you asked guys within the organization what our biggest strengths are, the first thing they would list is our strength down the middle. As of right now, it looks like a necessity for Geno to move to Staal’s wing, but the organization has said that they want to see if they can go out and get us a cheap winger. If they are successful in doing so, I don’t think there’s any way Staal and Malkin are put together…as much as it may disappoint some of the fans on PensBurgh.
I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
Honestly, the organization doesn’t care what the fans think.
They see way more than what we armchair GMs ever will. There’s probably a plan for our winger situation, if it comes down to either Staalsy or Geno playing wing, the front office is WAY more qualified than we are to make that call.
If ignoring us is the way to build a winning hockey team, I wouldn’t complain.
I'm 21 now... I still feel 20 and I still feel way too old.
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
Well, I’m sure they do care and they do listen…somewhat. They know that the Pens fan base would absolutely explode if Sid/Geno were to be traded or something. As for something like a positional change, I think they ignore us if they think it’s what’s best for the organization.
