Old trade review: Whitney for Kunitz/Tangradi
Was this trade a steal or what?? I was pumped when I first saw this trade, and I still am! Shero's best trade by far. Kunitz was a kind-of-Ryan-Malone-replacement (which we needed!). Ryan Whitney was always inconsistent anyways. He didn't look pretty on the powerplay point or on defense. And bumping his name off the roster made room for Letang to step up. And hopefully we will find out this year or next that the addition of Tangradi will be a plus...

I like Kunitz but i’m not crazy about his salary. Still though this trade won us a cup and not to mention it looks like Tangradi is going to play a huge part in this upcoming season.
About Kunitz’s salary- Sure! But Whitney was slightly more expensive ontop of being completely expendable. So we basically traded one thing we didn’t need for two things we did… Last year, Kunitz had a lot of injury issues followed up by slumps. Hopefully he can play 75+ games this year.

We can't make any decision on this trade yet
Because we haven’t even seen Tangradi play anything more than 1 NHL game in his career. We probably won’t be able to say one team won the deal for another year or so. I think the Ducks are happy though, they traded Kunitz and Tangradi for Visnovsky. So when we take all three teams into account, Ducks are the winner so far, Oilers are the losers and it’s still too early to tell for us.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Edmonton has a good, hidden advantage though, I wouldn’t write them as total losers…And I don’t think Whitney played too badly up there either.

As much as I hate the concept, I feel like we “won” this trade… Ignoring his contract, Kuni’s our best winger now plus Tangradi’s our best prospect…
To get that for a guy who we could live without thanks to our depth…
If Whits ends up putting up a Norris worthy season within the next 10 years, maybe it might have been a bad idea. But so far, there aren’t any indications of that.

Trust me...
when I say that it hurt to post that. I remember many days driving home after games, listening to the river of Whitney hate flowing on the postgame show and thinking “he’ll show ’em”. As time went on I realized he wasn’t showing ‘em. He was showing me. And I didn’t like what I saw. I know the guy has plenty of talent, but there just didn’t seem to be any way that he was going to turn the tide of negative opinion in Pittsburgh. I’m very happy to have gotten a guy like Kunitz in exchange, plus the promise of Tangradi. As long as his interests do not conflict with our own, I wish Whitney all the best.

Whits was a project… that had to be stated… But when you had guys like Free Candy & Tanger on your roster, he was expendable… The fact that someone was willing to take him while giving us significant upgrades, you just take it.
It would have been sweet if he found success with us but if push comes to shove, I’d drop him a thousand times to get that Stanley Cup

At the time of the trade I thought it was a horrible deal. Whitney had 2 great seasons with the Pens and I saw him as a guy that could be a top defenseman for a long time. Whitney just never seemed to bounce back from his foot surgery, and get back to playing the way he showed he could. Given how his career has gone since I would have to say it was a win for Shero.
yeah, this was a great trade.
Whitney’s $4M/year contract was deadweight. Just moving it for nothing would have been a good idea w/ the players we have coming up — and w/in context of the CAP, which people seem to forget.
That we got Kunitz, something we really needed, was a plus.
And that we got Tangradi was gravy.
You judge a trade on the time it was executed, not 10 years later.
They won the Cup the year they made the trade
So it’s definitely a win for me no matter what happens, really. Although Tangradi bombing would certainly put a sour spin on it for future years.
But still who would you see being paid $4 million to play defense for us, Whitney or Michalek?
Tangradi
sounds like a very good day for Tangradi at camp

agree w/ Shade — this trade was awesome all the way around

If this is accurate, I’m going to be really happy. Could you imagine a 2nd line with Tangradi, Staal, and Malkin?
Hockey Blogger at Pensburgh.com
that’d be off the hook!
it makes sense w/ the wings, too — Malkin prob better at RW and Tangradi at LW
although i’ve heard Tangradi say his style meshes better w/ Crosby’s
and i think they might want his size on Crosby’s line
and, of course, he prob STARTS on the 3rd line anyway!
Oh yeah, Danny will definitely try him on all 4 lines, probably in the same game/period/shift.

I doubt Tangradi’s getting burn on Sid’s line… They already have an established LW in Kuni. It makes more sense to put him on Geno’s line.

Although … wouldn’t a Kunitz-Staal-Malkin line be … amazing?!
Shero gets an A. Burkie gets a checkmark.
Even if it was a block of wood+Staalkin, that line would be amazing…
I sometimes wish we were a goal down in games just so I can see the Staal/Sid/Geno line… Then I feel bad that I wish we were a goal down. Then I see the lineup and I’m happy…

The flying car (I hope)… I can think of some trades that would be undone by a GM with a time machine.

I hate to be “that guy,” but I couldn’t stand Ryan Whitney. I’m happy the Pens got a good return on him in both Kunitz and Tangradi, because frankly I was beyond being patient with him by the time he left town. Like PensAreYourDaddy said above, I used to take the whole “he’ll show them soon enough” approach to Whitney as well, but after a while you just really had to accept the fact that he was not good.
Didn’t stop me from drafting him on my fantasy team last year though with a late, late pick.

I don’t like Ryan Whiteny because retaining him would have kept us from getting Michalek and Martin.

We all have fun at Ryan Whitney’s expense, and for good reason.
But I’ll always remember, and respect that night in June in the 3-OT game where he played the most minutes of any player (Gonchar hurt his back, you might remember), and for my money Whitney was the best player in that game. And he did it on one foot too.

I’m curious… At the time of the trade, what was the general feeling here? I was kinda in a very lonely existence when the trade first happened because I’ve yet to find this blog then…

I wasn’t blogging at the time either, but I can tell you that this was the reaction of the DC-Baltimore corridor (plus 1 in Shrewsbury) Penguins fans that I know.

agree. i can remember being excited and confused about Tangradi. i hadn’t remembered him from the draft or any Penguins prospects reports, but i was certain he had to be someone Shero added to sweeten the pot. the fact that we got out from under Whitney’s salary, got a winger for Crosby, AND AN EXCELLENT PROSPECT just did not compute.
i think that was the start of all our inSherowetrust hashtags…
i had a soccer background (hated it) where the premium was on homegrown talent so I was kind of sad that we lost Whits. But it didn’t make sense how the Ducks were willing to drop their top line wing for a 2nd pair defenseman and still had to sweeten the pot with a prospect…
I thought he was crazy

Ducks were willing to drop their top line wing
Corey Perry and Bobby Ryan beg to differ.

I think the general consensus among Penguins fans was an overall feeling of frustration with Whitney’s play prior to the trade and bittersweet to see him go. Lots of promise still in this guy we thought, despite he made rookie errors, soft on defense, and his offensive production was suffering. I remember one particular game shortly before he was traded, I think it was against the Leafs, the Penguins were down a goal, on the PP, and the Penguins pulled Fleury for the extra attacker with a minute left, Whitney carried the puck towards the offensive zone and iced the puck on a powerplay. For me, that was it.
Also at the time, Kris Letang had started to emerge as a cheap, consistent offensive force and that made Whitney expendable.
The return was good for both sides. I was familiar with Kunitz from watching a lot of Sharks vs Ducks games, but supposedly Tangradi was the centerpiece of the deal that Ducks fans were somewhat upset about losing. I didn’t think Kunitz was the answer for the goal scoring winger that the Pens had been looking for since Hossa, but he’s proved his value in other ways.

Agree on Kunitz. Some may disagree, but I like his style.
