He looks he protects the puck really well, given the footage in that video. As if we needed more reason to wish it were October already, Frank.

Tangradi...

For all of you Tangradi doubters out there, that kids a player. I don’t know why, just have a feeling he’s going to be something special. Size, skill, speed…just what that top line needs. I can see Tangradi-Kunitz-Crosby to start out the year.

by Wags24 on Jul 16, 2010 2:52 PM EDT reply actions

don’t Tangradi & Kuni play on the same same left side? It’s already an adjustment going from the WBS into the NHL. I don’t think I want him to have to adjust to playing on the off side as well…

Is it October yet?

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.

wingers are interchangable...

Don’t get so caught up on playing a side…as a Coach, I don’t care who is a left winger or a right winger…you’re a center, defensman, goalie or winger. If you can’t switch sides you don’t belong playing pro. Center is a WHOLE different beast. From playing defensively, offensively, covering the point, playing low…Wingers, left or right doesn’t matter. ESPECIALLY if you’re a rookie trying to break into a Championship level team…

by Wags24 on Jul 16, 2010 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions

Sure, but a winger is still going to have a strong side and a weak side, right? And wouldn’t a team that’s light on elite wingers want to do everything they can to give their top winger prospects the chance to succeed?

Shero gets an A. Burkie gets a checkmark.

by PopRocks on Jul 16, 2010 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Strong and weak side...

I would put weight on a players preference on which wing to in one of two situations. 1. They are a vet and have only ever played one side. 2. If they just completely bomb that side of the ice. The need to be prepared either way. Especially if you want to play on the powerplay. There, nobody plays a title position such as winger, D, center. So if you want to play there you have to be flexible. There will no doubt be situations where guys just don’t want to play on the other side of the ice but if that’s the case, you better show that the team NEEDS you over there. If not, you’re playing position is at the coach’s discretion.

So here's a question..

Let’s say Tangradi makes the big club this year and plays lights out…when will he up for a new contract and will the Pens be in the position to afford it?

by xaryss on Jul 16, 2010 4:41 PM EDT reply actions

Signed through the 2010-11 season.

If he does have a SUPERSTAR season this year, I would bet this would be another guy out the door. However, if they sign a winger, in the next few weeks, for a million or so, I would say Tangradi could be in line for a 2 to 4 year extension worth 1 to 1.5 mil per year. Even if he does have a HUGE year, I would hate to spend a lot on a single season worth of production. Wouldn’t the Blues kick themselves if Halak absolutely implodes.

by Wags24 on Jul 16, 2010 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

thanks Wags. If the Pens sign another wing in the next few weeks, does that mean Tangradi starts down with the baby Pens?

by xaryss on Jul 16, 2010 5:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I thinkr regardless of how he does in his first season, I’d like him to stick around… Part of me wishes that he doesn’t hulk out on us so quickly so Shero can throw an extension at him… I’d hate to lose him after we find out that he’s perfect for our top 6…

Signed for the next 2 years @ 845k on his ELC

and why is anyone freaking out already about losing him?
he hasn’t even played one game yet.

xaryss — if the Pens sign another wing in the next few weeks it will create more competition, but it doesnt mean Tangradi necessarily starts in WBS

He has too played one game!

Doh!
I sit corrected, he has played ONE game (NYI)
he has not played TWO games yet

Is he smart?

Tangradi just seems like he is more intelligent than the average NHL player. He speaks pretty well and doesn’t repeat the same few things over and over.

Oh, and he looks like a giant among boys in that footage.

FINALLY...

Jstin, for crying out loud I cannot believe you are the first to say it. When he was interviewed he carried himself VERY well. That is a HUGE part of taking that step. Character and maturity. He seems to have those tools already in place. When I pick teams, this is one of the things I put A LOT of weight on. If he cannot carry himself well he may not be able to handle tough situations well. I think Tangradi looks put together very well. Plus, let’s face it, he’s got the NHL body. That helps! Also, anybody remember PK Subban? Listen to him interview? Very smooth talker and very intelligent.

I don’t put 100% into this, obviously, but it’s a BIG part. Brian Burke has been known to not draft kids just because they didn’t sit up straight in an interview. This coming straight from a former NHL coach’s mouth.

Of course he is smart… he runs his own trivia contest!

found a way around it… a tiresome & slow way around but yeah… (hat-tip to whoever runs the PB twitter acct)

He seems to be doing well, shielding the puck, getting speed in his snap shots… I’m excited to see him in training camp.

Anyone else think he looks great wearing our colors? hehehe…

No prob dude. That’d be me. Proxys can be slow at times, but when you consider what they’re doing it kind of makes sense.

If you use Firefox, look into an add-on called Foxy Proxy.

can’t firefox crashes my laptop…

Consider replacing that dinosaur my number one financial priority now. That and saving enough cash to make that road trip to Pittsburgh & New York (plus Boise) eventually
