Done Deal: Kovalchuk Signs with Devils
No contract details just yet, but given some of the numbers floating around over the past few weeks I expect something ridiculous.

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
Everybody uses the trap (except for maybe the Washington Capitals). The Devils are just the ones who get singled out and ridiculed for using it.
either way i’m still unhappy with traps in general… they hurt (see: bear trap) & they stink (see: Montreal)…
in all honesty, i hope you guys keep Zach though… He’s not worth losing over Kovy. Hopefully Lou knows what he’s doing.

I think Zajac could be on his way out. Or they’ll try to trade Elias or send him to the minors.

I hope they signed him for something ridiculous! Although I sort of doubt that of Lou. I’m glad it’s finally over, but I do feel as though going to the Kings (at a reasonable price) would have been the best for everyone involved — including us. Ah well. Maybe now the Kings will start signing some other free agents, and the market will begin moving a little again.
Of the many things I am happy about today, one of them is that Kovalchuk is not a Pittsburgh Penguin.

Well I was going with 10-year plus. I was just using 10 years as a minimum. I figured the years would be there but the money was the potential change. I agree 10 years $10 mill each would be obscene, so if you misread it that way I can definitely see how.

Already I’ve seen comments about how the match-ups are going to be tough between the Pens, Cryers and Devils, and “Devils get Kovalchuk back… Pens and Flyers are going to see if the defensemen they signed are worth it,” talks. I didn’t think Kovalchuk was that big of an impact for the Devils, or maybe it’s just because I wasn’t paying attention. But it’s not like he went on some rabid scoring streak.

To who? NYI?
They’re about the only ones who could afford him. We can’t. Philly is already over the cap. NJ won’t waste their time now that they just signed Kovy. Rangers are in the conversation for any free agent but the Isles would be the team that could give him what he wants.

Of course, the Isles need to sign pretty much anyone and everyone just to get to the salary floor … so it may happen.
Shero gets an A. Burkie gets a checkmark.
Not sure
But they have something like $28 million in cap space right now, so I’d be willing to bet that they aren’t close. They should be making a push to get guys like Frolov or even Gagne at this point.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
They’re at about $36 million for the expected players on the roster, according to the sites. I believe the salary floor is about $40 million this season, but I could be wrong there.
I know they do have a few million more to add in salary somewhere. Perhaps they’ll wait for waivers or swing a deal with a team like Chicago.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
This HAS to be a long term contract
The Devs are obviously planning for the future here because I think they realize they’ll have to break out of that shell when Brodeur retires. They don’t want to be screwed over with nobody left. Now at least, they should have one of the league’s top goal scorers.
Another thing this proves is that there is simply no better division in the NHL than the Atlantic. I thought all 5 teams would have a chance at the playoffs this year and this just reinforces that.

I agree, though the Isles are probably still 2 years away, considering they aren’t bringing in any outside talent and keeping a very low payroll.
But the other 4 teams should make it a dogfight. NYR is probably, on paper, a step below the three big dogs of the division, but as Philly showed this year, all you gotta do is make the playoffs then who knows.

People seem to forget that the Devils will be shedding a lot of contract space next year in the form of Jamie Langenbrunner, Jason Arnott and other players. They’ll have about ten million more dollars next year to spend than they do right now.
i’m not a cap monkey… numbers tend to have an effect on me in which i run screaming in the opposite direction…
But even with a lot of contracts coming out, you’re still gonna have to work around Kovy & Zach’s big contracts. It could look like this year’s Blackhawks…
Is it October yet?
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
This is true
But Zubrus is still signed with that ludicrous $3.4m contract until 2013. Clarkson makes $.2667 until 2013 as well. And Elias will still have a $6m cap hit when he’s 37.
Also, you don’t have 10 million to spend. At least half of that will need to go towards signing Parise and I’m also fairly certain, you’re going to want Andy Greene back too.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
That should be $2.667, not .2667 for Clarkson….
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Next season the Devils will have around ten million $ to spend with several current contracts coming off the books. If you don’t believe me, look it up.
You’ll have $7.3m from those two. Langenbrunner has a $2.8m cap hit now while Arnott is at $4.5. I’m saying you don’t actually have that money because you’ll need to use all of it if you have any hopes of retaining guys like Greene and Parise.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Yes, but Parise’s current contract also comes off the books, which makes around $10 million of room.
It does not
In a sense. It comes off, but then goes right back on again and probably at 2.5x what he makes right now. His cap hit will be Kovalchuk-esque around $8m a year, and if the Devs don’t give it to him then someone else will. So that’s 5 additional million you need.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
To who?
Who’s going to want Zubrus’ contract? It’s like the Capitals with Nylander, it’s nice to want to trade someone, it’s 20x harder when trying to find someone to trade with.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Only way I see Zubrus getting moved is if there’s some team right before the beginning of the season that still desperately needs to get over the salary floor and would go for that. Otherwise, I can’t see any GM in the league wanting to take that contract (Calgary does NOT count)
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
They could always waive Zubrus and send him to the minors in hopes that he’ll find a KHL team to be loaned out to.
I expect that may make a move on Rolston and his $5 million too.

Zubrus’ salary has no place in the NHL. Rolston would be a big keeper on the PP though. They used Kovy and Rolly at the point on the PP last season a few times and even experimented with Kovy on the wing. I don’t think they’ll want to get rid of Rolston but it looks like it makes sense to do so.

Speaking of Rolston, I really hope they continue to use that ridiculous 5 forward set on the PP. I like our chances with Staal and Cooke up front to take advantage of their defensive ineptitude.

Nah. Our PK is great. Guys like Staal, Cooke, Adams, Talbot and Dupuis can handle the defensive zone pretty handily, even if it’s full of forwards. I’m with BobPurkey & Frank: I hope the Devils keep their 5 forward PP. Our real problem is even strength against the Devils.
Shero gets an A. Burkie gets a checkmark.
That isn't a fun contract
Especially since the Devils will now have the most expensive group of forwards in the NHL. They’re pushing $40 million on forwards alone.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
6 years $70 million is the report (~$8.57m cap hit per year).
how does that math work?
i’m getting >10M per year, not 8.57
I botched it, should be $60 for 7.
But there are some reports he may have signed a Hossa/Zetterberg/Franzen type deal of 17 years, so hold the phone..the NHL really needs to get involved and fix this, which I’m sure they will next CBA

I think a huge reason he decided to stay were his comrades – Ovechkin and Malkin being nearby. He wants to play against them regularly. I don’t know why, but it seems like almost every Russian player in the league plays close to the east coast.

There’s a huge Russian population in the NY/NJ area too, so if he wants to go into the city there are all kinds of restaurants and what have you to remind him of home. The facilities in NJ are nice (even if the area around it isn’t). It’s a good spot.

He has a NTC and he was over thirty-five when he signed his current contract. I know it seems like a bad deal, but hindsight is twenty-twenty. He was coming off a couple of good seasons with the Minnesota Wild when Lou signed him, He hasn’t been the same since he sprained his ankle during his first season back with the Devils. Unfortunately the deal is a bust.
I don’t see Rolston going anywhere. It’s Zubrus’ contract they have to try and scrap.
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Rolston...
Brian Rolston-W- Devils Jul. 19 – 1:56 pm et
With Ilya Kovalchuk signed, Brian Rolston thinks the Devils will probably make a trade to stay under the cap.
Although the financial terms of the Kovalchuk deal are not yet known, the Devils have almost certainly exceeded the salary cap with this signing. “It looks like they’re going to be over the cap, so (roster moves) that’s the only thing that makes sense,” Brian Rolston said. “I don’t know what my involvement in that is going to be, but we’ll see.” Rolston admitted that the Devils could end up trading him this summer, but he’s still happy with the Kovalchuk signing.
Source: New Jersey Online
Puck Daddy (actually, Sovetsky Sport) is reporting that it’s a SEVENTEEN year deal. As in one-seven, upwards of $100M.
I really think that nobody has any clue what actually went down, and we should probably just wait until the team or Kovalchuk’s agent confirm the deal for us.
Signed until he's 44??
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Irrelevant. It’s a trick to get around the salary cap. You sign a guy in a season before he turns 35, and the contract can be for as long as you want; when the player retires, the cap hit vanishes. What this enables the team to do is stretch out the money over an unrealistic number of years, enabling them to lower the overall cap hit while still getting the player the money he wants.
If the player remains good, you’ve got him for life and you’re set. If the player falls off a cliff after a couple seasons, you’ve got him for life and you’re stuck, but only until he retires. :)
You explained that very, very well.
I think there should be rules in the CBA against signing players to super long term deals. And I thought OV’s contract was long…

The interesting thing will be to see whether the players buy into some kind of limitation when they finally get around to negotiating the new CBA. I think they should, but I could see at least some of them trying to resist — in hopes of continuing to cash in.

Excellent Article: "The History of 50-goal Scorers...
check out this from Jewels from the Crown (the SBN blog on LA Kings)
production declines with age
something to keep in mind when people dispute that Crosby/Malkin are in their primes RIGHT NOW
Yup. People don’t want to admit that the vast majority of a hockey player’s career is spent in its decline phase, not in its prime.
Lemieux and Gretzky
both had their two most prolific goal-scoring years b/w the ages of 22-24
Crosby is 22
Malkin is 23
Kovalchoke is 27…
/nods
The whole “he’s only going to get better from here” at least in a pure goal scoring sense simply isn’t likely for anyone on the team other than Jordan Staal. It doesn’t mean that Crosby and/or Malkin won’t get more goals next year than this year, but it means this is the peak, the plateau before the hopefully long, slow decline phase of their careers.
Same is true of Fleury.

I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993
In that case
it has been done lots of times. First example I looked at was 1995-96 when a married Mario led the league with 69 goals.
by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 19, 2010 11:23 PM EDT up reply actions
Actually
Mario’s was 25 when he notched his top goals/game season, and 27 when he had his 3rd best goals/game.
Wayne was a great goal scorer, but he was more known for his playmaking ability. He was 26 when he set NHL records with 163 assists and 215 points in a season.
Equally, I do not believe the Sid or Geno have reached their peak.
by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 19, 2010 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions
not talking goals per game — we’re talking goals per season
the year to which you are referring (age 25) Mario missed 22 games.
his two best years were at age 22 (70 goals) and age 23 (85 goals)
part of the reason young guys score more goals is because they don’t get injured as often or as seriously as older players.
that chart Quisp put together on the Kings site shows very clearly that production drops off significantly >26.
I do not believe that 87 or 71 have peaked either — if peaked means they are on their way down from here — just that they are in their prime years right now.
Their “window” is now+.
+ what? not sure.
prob 3-4 years for both.
**wouldn’t surprise me, though, if Crosby ended up being an “exception” again.
But Mario’s 92-93 season wasn’t cut short due to injury, but rather illness. I don’t think an older player is more likely to have Hodgkin’s.
I couldn’t bring myself to study the charts on the Kings site, but I can tell you that from my own observation (and, I believe, the available stats), Mario and Wayne were better hockey players at 25-26 than 22-23.
by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 19, 2010 11:32 PM EDT up reply actions
I guess, in the end, it doesn’t really matter.
The reality is that, right now and for the next 3-5 years, we’re going to have not one but two world class players on the ice for our team. Personally, I think hockey prime is hit around 24-26, but that’s just from observation. Either way, if their primes are 23-24 or 24-26, the next few years should be awesome.

Wow, that’s $8.82M. If that’s true, what a terrible contract for Lou.

Now all the chips are falling….
Doesn’t surprise me.
Stevie Y should have them in the playoffs in about 1-2 years. He’ll be a real difference maker over there. Plus, with Stamkos and St. Louis….and…uhh Lecavlier, they should be ok.

Gagne, Stamkos, St. Louis, Lecavalier
Is there any better collection of shooters in the NHL? Methinks not
There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.
Dupuis, Cooke, TK, and Superstar!!
Don’t you know?!

Gagne to TB
For Matt Walker and a 4th round pick in 2011. LOOL

The Flyers essentially gave a 2nd rd pick and Gagne to TB for Meszaros, Walker and a 4th. The kicker is that the cap hit for Mesz + Walker is about .5 mil greater than the hit for Gagne. I can understand why Flyers fans are so pissed right now.
Would you say this now means they’re going to dump someone else?

Omg.

Lol that’s crazy, but I’m loving it! Haha…I’d be pissed too.

I don’t understand why the Flyers would want to trade Gagne. Wasn’t he was of their best performers in the playoffs, after Dany Briere?
Yeah, but they needed more cap room. And he was the guy that they could get the most back for at the price he was at.

They didn't get any cap space though
Turns out by adding Meszaros and Walker, they’re more in the red than they were when they had Gagne

I realize that, but I was just trying to explain the logic behind trading him in the first place.
Obviously, now, that didn’t work out and there are a bunch of Flyer fans going rabid while I sit here and laugh at them.

I taped an episode of Classic Series on the NHL Network that involved the Flyers just so I could laugh as the Flyers lost.

I got bored of the Kovy story weeks ago. As for the Gagne trade, good trade for Tampa Bay, I’m actually a bit of a fan of them
Same here. I decided I had zero interest in the rumors surrounding it and instead would just focus on the actual deal. Even now rumors are circling with price and longevity. But hey, at least we know where he’s playing.

It is crazy. I like the suggestion I saw on Twitter last night that when Sid comes up for a new contract, we sign him to a deal for 87 years, $87 million.

works for me, him for 87 years and then sign Malkin to a 71 year $71 million and we will be set, can have GREAT wingers then

First Kovalchuk is strictly a me player. He does not play defense and all he cares is his own stats. Second Brodeur prime is past. Third with the next CBA there will be most likely a work stoppage by the NHLPA. For all these reasons yhis signing spells big trouble for the Devils, who are known to have poor attendance to begin with.
General opinion is that another lockout will spell the end of the NHL. I’m not sure if that’s entirely true, and it’s hard to say how much of that talk is from people embarking on a public relations campaign to convince the players not to strike. But there are most definitely several teams that would run into serious trouble in the event of a moderate to lengthy work stoppage. Basically, I think it’s going to take leadership who understands when to make concessions, and which things to stick to their guns about.
