2009-10 Pittsburgh Penguins Yearbook - "The Games"

2009-10 Pittsburgh Penguins Yearbook

Here's how this story goes.  I ordered some photo prints from Walgreens.  A couple of days later, they sent me a coupon for 50% off all photo gifts, including photo books.  Photo books?  Cool.  As many of you know, my wife and I are able to attend a few Pens games each year, and we always take the camera along.  I had been trying to come up with an idea for collecting all of our game photos from this past season to make something that we could enjoy for years to come.  I was hoping for something more than just a bunch of 4x6 prints that get tucked away in a box somewhere and forgotten.  This photo book thing sounded like it might have promise.

If you're interested, read more after the jump.

Star-divide

I started slowly, just going through the few thousand pictures that we had going back to the 2009 Cup Final, picking the ones that would be worth including.  The problem that I faced was that the coupon was only good through Saturday.  By the time Saturday rolled around, all I had managed to do was select the photos for the book.  That in itself was quite an accomplishment, but I still had to assemble the book.  I started doing that around 1:30pm, hoping that the coupon would be good up through midnight.  Luckily it was.  I ended up submitting my order at 11:59pm.  I'm really happy with the result, and I'd like to share it with all of you.  My preference would be to ship it around to each of you individually, but that may not be practical.  So I did the next best thing I could think of - I took pictures of each page and posted them to my Picasa Web Albums.

If you have a few minutes to kill, check out the book here.

Man I miss hockey. One of my dreams is to go to a Pens home game and a Canucks home game

Sweet pics man. I bet your brother has been giving you a bit of stick since the Hawks won

I miss hockey so much

I find myself just staring at this picture of the new arena and imaging the Pens skating around down there.
.

.
My brother has been pretty cool about his Hawks winning it all this year. I think he realizes the Pens have a good shot of getting back to the top so there’s no sense being too much of a jerk now. Plus I went pretty easy on him after the sweep 18 years ago.

Haha good to hear that he’s remembered from 18 years ago. You got season pass for next season too I imagine?

by andrew21nz on Jul 29, 2010 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

No season pass. I wish. Looking at the schedule, we’ll try to get to around 10-15 games next season.

Oh yeah, he remembers. Plus I made sure to call him yesterday to let him know that game 4 from the 92 final would be on nhl network. :-)

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 29, 2010 5:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Haha were those the days of Jagr or was that too early? I’ve only really followed NHL for a year so don’t know the history

10-15 games, still pretty decent. I imagine a season pass would be horrific. How hard is it to get tickets to individual games? Maybe in a few years I’ll get to go to one :)

by andrew21nz on Jul 29, 2010 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Individual game tickets are pretty readily available on the resale market.

Yes, those were the days of Jagr. He was a rookie when they won the Cup in 91. Then they repeated in 92. Poor guy probably thought he’d win it every year.

If you haven’t seen this goal, check it out. It was a huge moment in game 1 of the 92 final.

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 29, 2010 9:18 PM EDT up reply actions

I’ll check it out when I get home, thanks! I was a fan of Jagr from my NHL games on consoles, that’s what made me like the Pens. The games were the only real interest I had in it at that point anyway (late 90s up to a coupe of years ago)

These are amazing photos. I only went to 6 games last year myself and while I sat close to the ice on several occasions, my pictures are nowhere near as fantastic as yours! And consider me officially jealous that you were at Game 7 against Detroit!!

by silvsiara on Jul 29, 2010 7:05 AM EDT reply actions

After the horror of game 5, we initially had serious doubts about going back. It didn’t take long to realize that if the Pens could pick themselves up off the mat and force a game 7, then we owed it to them to be there to support them.

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 29, 2010 7:52 AM EDT up reply actions

I don’t blame you. My sister and I were so cranky at Game 6 against Ottawa (waking up at the crack of dawn didn’t help either) that we seriously considered leaving when the Pens were down 3-0. And then we decided we weren’t good fans for even thinking about it so we stuck around. And thank God we did. Nevertheless, these are beautiful photos.

by silvsiara on Jul 29, 2010 8:33 AM EDT up reply actions

Thanks! I sometimes give people a hard time for leaving games early for non-emergency reasons, but we have probably all done it or at least considered it at some point. The only hockey game I can think of that I left early was a 2008 game in Philly, but that was only because the Flyers fans at Wachovia Center would run over, get in our face and bump/shove us after each of their goals. We left after 2 periods and haven’t been back.

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 29, 2010 9:00 AM EDT up reply actions

That bad? Wow, I have considered making a trip to the Verizon Center and the Wachovia Center but my sister thinks it’s better if we see some team other than the Pens (hey, the Habs? We will gladly cheer against them!!). I haven’t left a game early, not that I have seen that many live, but I figure given that I have paid a lot for my ticket to see my favourite team, why would I take off? When we went to see Game 3 of the Washington-Montreal game, the Bell Center had maybe 10 people max (okay, I exaggerate a little but there was no one left) about 10 minutes before the end. I figured I had paid so much and since I was still supporting the Habs at that point, I owed it to them to stick around, even though they were 5-1 down.

by silvsiara on Jul 29, 2010 10:18 AM EDT up reply actions

I had to leave a game early, too bad because it was the only regular season game I’ve been to. It was Leafs-Pens in Pittsburgh, and the Pens were winning 6-2. I didn’t want to leave, but my dad and brother (not even partial Pens fans) were depressed, and some drunk Pens fans were screaming “USA!” and “Go home Leafs!” in our faces. It was sad, those were my last moments at the Mellon

What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)

They are a big bunch of bores. I would not want to go back, either.
Philly fans=slobs.

And this is really, really cool. I also miss Hockey and I hate these hot summers…
it makes me long even more for cold ice and Hockey and the Pens!

Your photos are simply wonderful.

Phenomenal photos. Love the presentation. Great memory book.

Thanks! Because I was trying to get it done in time to use the coupon, certain sacrifices were made, like not having any captions. I simply didn’t have time to go through and put them in, plus doing so would have meant using different page layouts where the pictures would have been smaller. Even the title pages listing the games were something that I didn’t start working on until 11:45pm, but I’m glad I got those included.

This is really sweet. The hard work paid off. Thanks for sharing!

I have warm fuzzy feelings inside looking at the book… I want one for my coffee table… lol

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.

I’ll be on the lookout for another coupon from Walgreens and we’ll order a copy for you. But you have to come pick it up. Costs too much to ship to Singapore ;-)

WOW! I thoroughly enjoyed that book!

Thank you so much for sharing. You have a lot of great pictures with different players, and I especially love the many pictures of one of my favority players, Kris Letang. I liked the one of him signing your jersey, and the “down in front” picture.

The only problem with looking through that book is that it makes the summer seem that much longer.

Amazing pics. Great for all of us who couldn’t go to the games to be a part of the atmosphere in July.
That gave me an idea: we should do a collective yearbook of everyone’s Pens memories, from the past 5 (?) years. A lot of great things happened to this franchise, it would be a nice keepsake and definitely something to show your grandkids.

What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?

Thanks...

Hooks, Hulk, GoPens!, tmpens, Leafer87, AppleSweetRose, and the rest, for the kind words. Sometimes I feel like my old man dragging the family together so we can watch a slide show of our family photos. Of course the Pens games are lots more interesting than my family’s vacations ever were.

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 31, 2010 12:56 AM EDT reply actions

LOL PYAD. Not old, not ever, not as along as we are hockey fans. I can’t bring the photos along to show the “family” but I guarantee we’re in the same age bracket. Hockey fandom has no age limit.

I’m sure your family vacations were way cool—I think we all have those stories and memories!

Looks Great!

I can only imagine how sweet it would’ve been to be at games 6 and 7 of the finals.

I was there for the Valentines day game against Nashville with my girlfriend and my sister. If you happened to look up at the jumbo-tron after crosby scored his goal, I was up there in my Fleury jersey, holding up “87” Not that I would expect you to remember. ;-)
I was proud to say that I was on the screen after Mr. Crosby scored. How many people can say that? (Quite a few, probably. Haha!)

That's cool, too bad my timing wasn't better

This is all I have from after Sid’s goal:

Hey, you got to see a rare event that day, a goal by Orpik!

by PensAreYourDaddy on Aug 2, 2010 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

Very Nice

That’s true! I bet less players have seen an Orpik goal than have been on the jumbo-tron after one of Crosby’s goals. Haha!

We really wanted to make it on to TV, so we made a bunch of signs. My sister and girlfriend made it on for about 5 seconds holding up, you got it, a “Sid-sational” sign. I would upload pictures, but I have no idea how to post pictures from my computer on here. Help me out, if you’d like, either for these, or for future reference.

In this highlight pack, at 29-32 seconds, you can see my 8-7 right in the middle of the screen. And that’s my sister holding up the red “Be Mine Cosby” sign.

Thanks!

by The Malk-Man on Aug 3, 2010 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions

The jumbo-tron camera man was right beside me when Sid scored, and I had my numbers ready to go. It was perfect.

Excellent work. Didn’t see you at first but now I do. It’s tough to tell from this brief clip, are you in the corner around C26 or the opposite corner around C10?

To post pictures, you just need to find somewhere on the web to put them. There are any number of sites you can use. I use Picasa. You can get a free account with 1GB of storage. Upload your pic to there, then copy the URL of the image location. Come here and click the image button above (looks like a tree, next to the link button). Paste the URL and you’re all set.

Awesome!

Love the pics and the signs! So, I had the right corner at least, sort of close to C26. I should have recognized it since I was in A28-G for game 2 against Ottawa (though I got this ticket from the guy who was sitting in front of me since it would look better in the scrapbook than the crappy e-ticket that I had):

I see you went with Picasa. I’ll give them another plug. You can get a free download of Picasa 3 and it is amazing for organizing your photos, making collages, etc, though what you did in Paint certainly looks nice.

Thanks for sharing!
