Hometown Discount..

I find this quote amusing…

“Other players followed Crosby’s lead. The seven other core guys took less to play here, including Martin and Michalek. Martin turned down, in Shero’s words, a “significantly better” offer from another team."

Mainly because the thoughts of taking a discount to play anywhere is a hotly contested item on some of these boards. Sad thing is, there are plenty of us that always thought it was true, but many also thought it was a ridiculous though. Hmmm, maybe LeBron could learn something from hockey players. Pittsburgh is turning into a Players-team and the city, the fans, and MARIO are reaping the rewards!

Players from every sport can learn a thing or two from some hockey players.

Especially soccer players, if that game became faster as a result of less playacting and more standing back up and getting back into the game…

Yet another validation in my head that hockey’s the best sport in the world!

Soccer...

Dead on! I love watching the World Cup but HOLY CRAP I am having a tough time getting past all the diving. How many great scoring opportunities are squandered because some knuckle-head tried to buy a call just inside the 18??

like the last game… The newspapers are gonna say that the Dutch dominated but it was a horrible match with Oscar performances all around… I can’t believe I got out of bed at 2AM for that…

Although props to De Zeeuw… He got kicked in the face but stood back up after getting his bearings and got back to the game.

Tim Duncan did that though a few years ago. Took a few million less and told him to save it in case someone got hurt. So big ups to Duncan.

Tim Duncan was worried about winning Championships, not becoming a global icon like Lebron is trying to do. What Lebron needs to realize is the 2 are hand in hand. Think Jordan would have been as big of an icon as he was without winning 6 titles? Sure he was huge just for his exciting style of play, but at a point people want to see results along with the fun.

The Spurs are kinda an anomaly in the NBA. They’re kinda like the Pens or Wings in that they’re so well run and organized. They’re probably the ONLY team there w/o a horrible contract, building around career guys like Duncan & Gino.

The owners are the responsible ones there. The fact that they’ve kept Popovich around for so long (which is the only reason Duncan stayed his entire career) is why there’s been so much stability in San Antonio.

I agree, i’m not saying hockey players are saints and do nothing wrong, but i swear every week you can find a story about an NFL player doing something, and the NBA is just a joke. Maybe that’s why the NHL is considered a lesser sport in terms of fans and ratings, no bad publicity, that’s what they say any publicity is good publicity.

It’s not so much their personal lives I have a problem with, it’s when they bring their beef into their work. You know, whenever there’s a contract dispute, they refuse to go to training camp or do anything involving the team. Dude, your rights are with the team. Until those rights are traded away or let go by that team, get you ass to work! Drives me nuts.
Love football, but I wouldn’t drop everything to watch it. Hockey is different in the sense that it’s better…lol. If a guy in the NHL gets arrested, he’s made fun of. In the NFL, it’s just a daily news thing.

The reason I think this is because in hockey, you need to be mobile and not necessarily big. I think it’s a pretty good sign when there’s over 150 NHL hockey players (many of them stars) in the Olympics and all of them pass the IOC drug tests. That ought to tell you something.

2. dog fighting? jesus, he served 2 years in jail, was publicly shamed and lost millions. is killing dogs terrible? yes. are the lives of 100 dogs worth that of one person? not even close. he did his time, he deserves the opportunity to still earn a living (plus if you wanna be pissed, stallworth did a couple months for killing that person, vick did 2 years for killing dogs, that’s retarded)
3. generalizing that all football players are assholes is dumb, just like generalizing that all hockey players are angels is too. douchebags play every sport, you just gotta look past it and realize that not everyone is an asshole .

Exactly. That’s when you have to think that enough is enough, you’re done. There’s a difference between Jordan Staal getting arrested for being too drunk at his brother’s bachelor party- which isn’t even being arrested, it’s called going to the Drunk Tank- and then threatening people with guns, killing people, killing dogs, etc. I mean come on, do you really think Vick has changed, especially now that he’s already in the news for being around shady activity again.

by AlexStitch on Jul 7, 2010 7:07 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey, I never said that killing dogs is worse than killing people. My point was that they are still illegal, if you do something illegal, with a certain degree, you should be reprimanded. If you’re arrested for public drunkenness, that’s different than running a dog fighting ring for years in your back yard. It is retarded how imbalanced shit is now in terms of crimes, but that’s how it goes: you get caught with a joint you could do a year in prison, but if a guy rapes a woman he can be out in months.

Heatley is a different story to me. He accidentally killed someone for doing what any human being would do: driving too fast in a car that was meant to drive too fast. And his toxicology report came back that he was under the limit of alcohol, so that’s no excuse. He wasn’t driving the car from Death Proof.

This all boils down to the old saying, a few rotten apples can spoil the bunch.

Baseball I don’t put into that category as much; it used to be back in the day players knew how to handle situations in their own clubhouse and wouldn’t let it leak out, and also the reporters that covered the teams were closer and wouldn’t write something that would damage the team as a whole. All of that has changed. There is that code in baseball that used to be very strict, but now it’s falling out because younger generations (my generation unfortunately) is just so full of assholes and selfish, catered to cry babies.

Hmmm, maybe LeBron could learn something from hockey players.

I agree with everything you said except this. It’s a little different in basketball right now. Teams are basically trading away players and not re-signing players in order to clear cap room for LeBron. They’re basically worshiping the ground he walks on. It’s like Shero said “We’re going to pay Sid what he wants to be paid.” If that’s 12 million dollars a year, then you better believe he’ll be paid that. The only this is, we all know it won’t be and that’s what’s so amazing about him and a lot of other players not named Kovalchuk.

On top of that, what young player in his right mind is going to tell one of the greatest players in the history of the game, a guy that has beaten cancer, back problems, double- and triple-teams, constant hooking and slashes (back in the day the slashing and hooking was worse, obviously), that he wants more money to strap MARIO’S team financially? Seriously!? I wouldn’t have the marbles to do it. If a player does have that type of lack of respect towards the history of the game, you probably don’t belong in the NHL.

I think his relationship with Mario will be one of many reasons that Sid chooses to remain a Penguin even though he could make more money elsewhere. That and recognizing that he is the next Mario. He’s the leader and face of our team, and he takes that very seriously.

But I think the big reason he takes the discount is that he wants to win Stanley Cups. Not killing our cap space leaves room for other quality players, and we need those players to win championships. Watching the footage of Sid skating with the Stanley Cup, I’m sure that feeling was worth more to him than $2 million extra per year. He’s a multimillionaire for life, he doesn’t have to worry about money. His focus is on the Cup.

That’s what so awesome about this guy. He could make money ANYWHERE. Hell, he’s getting paid more per year by Reebok than most of the NHL players are period.
Yet, he knows his best chance for a Cup is in Pitt and he took a discount to stay there and probably will take another discount to keep that way.

An okay article, for Cook.

One thing to point out is that the Hawks have done a pretty good job (so far) at keeping their core together. Yes, their roster will look significantly different next year, but players like Versteeg, Ladd, and Byfuglien were not part of their core. I’d say the only one who might have been was Versteeg, but he’s a top-6 kind of guy who was relegated to playing on the third line, so it makes sense that they trade him. They’ve retained Hossa, Sharp, Kane, Toews, Keith, and Seabrook. Of course, they still have some distance to go before they have an actual team put together, but my point is that they’re managing to work at least a little bit of magic with a team that was previously pretty poorly managed. Yes, Shero has done a great job at managing the cap. But let’s not count the Hawks out just yet!

Fans are fickle like that. Of course they won’t feel that way when the games start next season. But ask Hawks fans if they would give up some of those ‘fan favorites’ this year so that they could win their first Cup in 40+ years, they would gladly do it.

There are some young guys in WBS who are chomping at the bit to get thier chance to prove themselves and I believe they will do it successfully. A new gorgeous areana. This is definitely a great time to be a pens fan. Now only if the buccos can take a look at the mgmt and ownership of the pens and take a few notes.

That or hand over the reigns to the management of the Pens haha!

ehh..I’m selfish and say let’s keep Lemieux and Burkle to ourselves. Let the Pirates bathe in their own bullheaded misery.

I've told [a 9 months pregnant] Nathalie that she can't have the baby on a game night. I'm not missing a playoff game. -Mario Lemieux in 1993

Sorry to all you real Pittsburghers, but I don’t give two $hits about the Pirates and would prefer to see our guys focused on the Pens and not worried about battling the Yankees or Red Sox.

Defense

I just read this article on NHL.com and got very excited about our defense for next year.

What makes it extra good is not only did we get Martin, but the Devils lost him!

I’m still nervous about the season…

We got crazy stronger but so did the rest of the division… It’s gonna be so fun…

Is it October yet?

Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
