Kovy Re-Signing With The Devils

  Kovalchuk_devil5_medium

TSN reports that Ilya Kovalchuk is "on the verge" of signing a 7 year $60 million contract with the New Jersey Devils soon.

TSN Report

Although NJ Devils General Manager Lou Lamoriello tells Rick Chere of the Star-Ledger that "everything is status quo." and "there is nothing new today."

First, if the TSN report is true what does it mean for the Penguins, The Atlantic Division and The Eastern Conference?

Second, what does it mean for Zach Parise who's 4 year deal ends at the end of 2010-2011 season? Will the Devils re-sign him? Can the Devils re-sign him.

In my opinion Zach Parise is the face of the New Jersey Devils and the future captain of the Devils. But, if they do sign Kovalchuk as well as signing Anton Volchenkov for S4.2 million and Henrik Tallinder for S3.4 million this offseason. As well as Travis Zajac for $3.8 million , Dainius Zubrus for $3.4 million, Patrik Elias for $6 million and David Clarkson for $2.6 million for the next 3 seasons. Not to mention Martin Brodeur, Brian Rolston and Jason Arnott for $5.2, $5 and $4.5 million respectively. Johan Hedberg is making $1.5 million just for this season to play 8 to 12 games at best and Jamie Langenbrunner is making $2.8 million. Although Arnott, Langenbrunner and Hedberg will make thier money for just this season. That’d be at least $8.8 million for 3-5 spots to fill on the roster.

NJ Devils Salary Cap

What will the Devils do? Parise is a Restricted Free Agent but his 3.1 million salary should and most likely will increase. This isn't including Andy Greene who is also going to be a Restricted Free Agent after the 2010-2011 season and now that Paul Martin is gone, he is their best puck moving defensemen who is making $737,500 in 2010-2011.

As a Pens fan, the possibility of the Devils not being able to re-sign Parise is priceless, but again I believe he is the face of their team with or without Brodeur. Kovalchuk will most likely be the highest paid New Jersey Devil with this deal. Is Kovalchuk worthy of this deal? The better question is he worth more than Parise?

They’ll keep Parise at all costs. I expect they’ll make Rolston disappear before this season, there was also some talk maybe they’d look into trading Elias if it came to keeping Parise for years to come.

One way or another, they’ll find a way. Lou traded a player who was retired, dude’s pretty crafty and the NHL doesn’t really stand up to him.

Not a good value. Obviously, he’s very talented offensively, but there are better ways to use $8M+/year. If he’s in the Atlantic, so much the better.

And cookie was quite effective against him last season aswel, so thats even better.

NEver thought the Devils would be so cap silly… Maybe it’s a sign that they’re willing to stop playing trap hockey… Although Kovy playing trap makes me laugh sinterly…

I think they’ll break their cap to sign Parise… But this Kovy contract will be an albatross in a couple of years. They’ll do well now, but I suspect a lot of angry/tired devil fans will show up nearer to Parise’s contract date.

Is it October yet?

Brodeur

Brodeur only has two years left on his deal maybe two years left in his career I’m sure the Devils management is doing whatever it takes to win a cup in the next two years because of Brodeur. That is really the only thing I can think as to why they’d go salary crazy.

Can They Keep Parise

They had better keep Parise, one of the best players on their team.

I am stunned that they wnated Kovy back. Really stunned.

Just makes things alot more interesting this upcoming season, for sure.

The dude is clearly all about money, let him take that and leave. The NHL has Geno, Sid and OV, plus a bunch of other “2nd tiered” stars to entertain the fans.
Once the guy turned down an offer to make the Kings a major Stanley Cup contender, I knew what was Kovy was after.

Kovy has already said he wanted to stay in the NHL so if he can’t get a deal with the Devils or the Islanders, I think he’ll probably go to the KHL as a last resort.

by stoopidtom on Jul 7, 2010 1:03 PM EDT via mobile up reply actions

I heard that the KHL offered Kovy a 3 year deal worth $42M.

Could be true, but I wouldn’t put a lot of faith in “a report from Russia”. News from there is kind of like the Wild West, you hear some crazy things

That one is as good as a rumor

But it is true that SKA have offered him a greater annual salary than anything he’s received from NHL teams. However I’m not sure if that’s possible any more – KHL has an odd salary cap. You only have about $20 million in cap space to work with but one player designated the “franchise player” doesn’t count towards that. So since Nabokov just signed with SKA (who would be really the only team that could afford that kind of money to Kovy), I assume he becomes the franchise man if he’s making anything like what he did with SJ. I don’t think they have the cap space.

Wow. I just read the Nabokov report. 4 yrs in Russia. He’s already 35. He may not come back to the NHL

by kirblu22 on Jul 7, 2010 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

This is only a rumor, nothing more

He’s no closer to signing with one team than he is with another.

Yesterday, Russian news were reporting that he’s very close to signing with SKA. Then this. And now the Kings are apparently back in the picture again. There’s no real point in thinking about it until he actually signs somewhere. He would be the most important player in franchise history if he went to the Isles, I never thought he made the Devils much better, if at all, the Kings don’t really matter because we never see them and sure if he goes to SKA.

We or other east teams might see them more often if they signed Kovy.

Nice. Mine were right behind the goalie that the Pens shot at twice. But there’s about 5 feet of concrete between the glass and the first row back there.

Sid scored the shootout game winner right in front of me. Literally right in front of me. Ranks as one of my coolest “in person” sports events.

Nassau Mausoleum

Yes, that arrangement where they don’t have seats on the glass behind the goals was quite strange.
.

.
Also interesting was the intermission baby race. Did they do that when you were there? That was a first for me.
.

.
Unfortunately, the Pens blew a lead and the Isles won this one 3-2. Sid made up for it the next night with a hat trick against the Ranges.

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jul 8, 2010 12:18 PM EDT up reply actions

Simple. First, the word “would” implies future tense. Second, if Kovy does sign something ridiculous, like 10 years, $100 million, he would be the piece that keeps the Islanders in New York and could be the final step in getting an arena built. No question they have had more decorated players in their history, but if he’s the difference between the franchise staying or moving, he would be the most important player in their history.

I’m going back and forth on if his signing is a good thing. I’m not too sure. I thought he’d definately go to the Kings. They have the cap space and the godd players for him to play with. I give credit to any team that tell’s him we won’t sign you for 10 yrs $10 million per year. It seems like with TSN’s report that he is taking a decrease in salary but not that much. Kovy will make $8.5 million on this deal if it’s true. So what does Parise make $9 million. $17.5 million for two players is risky. Especially with the cap being $59.4 million. Between the Pens big 3 it’s $21.4 million.

by kirblu22 on Jul 7, 2010 8:03 PM EDT reply actions

If the Devils sign Kovalchuk, Brian Rolston’s contract is getting traded for sure. He’s not worth 5 mil and they’ll need to drop cap.
