I know I said we'd we'd wait until Thursday for the last poll to close, but given the utter domination of Jaromir Jagr I think it's safe to say we can move on to the fourth and final pick.

So far the order is:

Rick Kehoe for the win

Why was poll two open for three days while poll three was open for two days. Jagr was winning the second poll after the second day, so he should have been the winner not Sid. I smell a conspiracy here… is Bettman running this?

PensFan highlighted my point. Three days was the initial period for each poll. Number 2 was close up until the final minute. Number three was no question by the end of the day.

This is the most interesting pick imo, because there are multiple players/coach/gm/playbyplayguy/ who deserve this. My vote went to Kehoe for his longivity with the franchise and his excellence before Mario.

by Sid the captain on Aug 18, 2010 7:54 AM EDT reply actions

Nice!

Kehoe was the best player in franchise history prior to Mario. A one time 55-goal scorer was a Penguin through and through. It’s a shame he had that nerve problem and had to retire when he did. Who knows what kind of numbers he could have put up playing alongside Mario a little longer. His tenure with the Penguins didn’t end there as he took a job as a scout for a couple of years, next as an assistant coach from 1987 to 2001, and then as the head coach for a couple of seasons. VOTE KEHOE!

by Mario's Mullet on Aug 18, 2010 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions

At least I have a couple comrades for Kehoe.

I think Seth’s very good piece might have swayed more people to Barrasso than would have voted for him earlier.

But it’s all good. As I’ve said before there’s a number of good candidates for this 4th position that I think you could make a good case for. Francis, Barrasso, CP, Kehoe and Stevens all deserve consideration for it.

I do hope, in 10 years that Malkin is a slam dunk to be on here. That would mean good things have happened.

Even looking 5 or so years from now and hopefully one or more Cups, I think Malkin’s a lock. However, I wasn’t looking at Geno’s contract length/the Pens cap space. I would love to have Geno here forever, but I’m not convinced he’s here to stay.

Toughest call

I’d have went with Lange but that was more of a nod to history and to extend the timeline of the 4 faces, kinda like voting for Kehoe. I ultimately went with Patrick since some of the most prolific times in Pens history were thanks to what he did for the team. Dunno though, if you look at distinct eras, you have the pre-Mario era, the Mario era and post Mario era. Nobody yet is there that represents the ups and several downs of the pre-Mario era. Maybe for a reason, but it seems insincere to not give a nod to someone like Lange…. Tough, tough, tough vote…

by gopens44 on Aug 18, 2010 10:05 AM EDT reply actions

I voted Craig Patrick

Sure, he made some bad moves and a lot of his legend is based around the 2 trades in the cup years. Still, it’s tough to look at the Pens over the last 20 years and not recognize the profound effect he had on the team.
Even the team now is largely a by-product of players that he drafted. Sure, he missed on a some and a few were slam dunk but even a few years removed from his tenure and the Pens “core” guys are almost all CP picks. Nevermind that most of the other guys on the above list, and the three already on Pensmore were all CP people in one way or another…

Francis is my vote. One of the all-time greats, 4th all-time in team scoring and playoff scoring, and all while being one of the best defensive centers in the game. Played 8 seasons in Pittsburgh, and was captain for 2.

Barrasso was a good goalie on a great team, and Francis was a much much better player. Too early for Malkin, despite the Conn Smythe. Patrick would probably be my next pick.

by PensFan8725 on Aug 18, 2010 11:35 AM EDT reply actions

Lange, for as iconic as he is, didn’t win or lose any games. Sure he is an important part of the franchise, but to me, this is about the guys who’ve bleed and sweat and done things to earn victories.

Is Mike Lange or John Barbero’s voices one of the first things I think of when I think Pittsburgh Penguins? Yeah sure. But Iceburgh is one of the first thing for a lot of people too, should a mascot be up there? Where are you drawing the line?

I voted for the guy who dedicated almost his entire professional career to the Penguins:
-4th in total games played for the franchise
-3rd in points scored (only 66 and 68 have more)
-parts of 16 seasons behind the bench as an assistant or head coach.

With respect to the others in consideration, no one left has made that type of contribution. Which is why you should vote Kehoe.

No disrespect to Lange or Barbero, but the Pens have had too many great players lace up the skates to have Mt. Puckmore featuring the faces of announcers and play-by-play guys. I don’t think of Barbero, CP, or Lange (unless it’s that amazing secod line of Lang, Straka and Kovy) when I think of the Pens. Way too many great players to pick from here.

by AronV on Aug 18, 2010 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions

The main argument for Kehoe is that he was with the Pens for a long time, but did he ever do anything great? I don’t mean to bash the guy, and admittedly I’m too young to have ever seen him play, but is there one defining moment in his career that anybody really remembers? Francis has several huge playoff moments, he was a hall-of-famer, and he was a big part of two cup teams. Vote for Ronnie.

You’re right that Kehoe doesn’t have any splash plays…But he did lead the Pens in scoring 3 seasons. (Francis never finished higher than 2nd).

…And as coach, who do you think switched the forwards to send Francis out to the ice to get that glory?

That’s right, Rick Kehoe won as many Cups with the Pens as Ron Francis did.

Ha, I knew Kehoe was always a beast at matching lines. Winning as an assistant coach and winning as a player aren’t exactly the same thing, though. Kehoe led the team in scoring 3 times, but he was playing on pretty bad teams, he was never in the top 10 in the league. Much tougher to lead the team in points when Jagr and Lemieux are on your team. In 95-96, Francis was 4th in the league…and 3rd on his team, that’s crazy.

Wow, Barasso doing very well, didn’t think he would finish in the Top 3, with those other great choices…

(Kind of) surprising to see Ronnie Francis up there too. Not that he doesn’t deserve it, but of course because of his ever prevalent Whaler/Cane roots…I tend to think of him as 40% Pen, 60% Cane, so I didn’t go with Ronnie.

Rick Kehoe gets my vote, for reasons already stated. Hey, history has to be respected, and there was a franchise before Mario Lemieux, believe it or not, lol. He’s definitely deserving of the 4th spot.

I was hoping to get him or Pronovost up there so I hitched onto your wagon. Truthfully, Pronovost was better but played well before folks in Pittsburgh even know what hockey was. A handful of 40 goal seasons, a 50+ goal season. All while having absolutely no one to help him. during his 9 years with the Pens he was by far the best Penguin almost every year. It was Pittsburghs first real hockey talent to spend his prime with the Penguin on his chest.

That way if my first choice is Kehoe but my second choice is Francis, my vote still matters. In the run-off Kehoe won’t be an option, so I can place my vote for Francis, who will then overtake that goalie with a bad attitude.

Voted for Rick Kehoe, suprised he’s getting so few votes (50 goal scorer, career Pens leader at one point before 66-68, coach, scout, over ten years with the organization).
I was torn between him and Craig Patrick. But no way IMO, should players like, Francis, , Coffey, Carlyle be considered. They all have stonger ties to other organizations. Remember top 4 faces of the franchise (eliminates Mike Lange no?) so it’s what the player did for the organization not his career.

I don’t necessarily equate them, just making a point that there’s a difference in honoring players, coaches and executives that built a team and contributed blood and sweat directly to the effort to help win, and a guy who calls the game.

For the fan experience Rushmore, no doubt Lange’s on there with Barbero, Vince Lascheid and probably the iconic CC man.

I respect your opinion that it’s all about guys who impacted wins and losses, but does that mean you’d rank Poni over Lange?

I wouldn’t consider either for the honor, frankly. But Ponikarovsky would have been the only one eligible, in my view.

The man has had a huge impact on my becoming a Pens fan and my continued enjoyment of the game.

I guess if that’s what your building your Mt. Pensmore about, there’s certainly nothing wrong with it. I have a different perspective and standards for this. No big deal, really, just the way we look at it is different.
