Bill Guerin? Paul Kariya? Trade Acquisition? What Should Be Done?
Hockeybuzz.com reports:
On Guerin and the Penguins...
Andy Strickland is reporting the Penguins are soon going to alert Bill Guerin if they will be able to bring him back. I am hearing it's between Guerin, Kariya, and another forward they would acquire via trade...
There are also reports on Lee Stempniak and dare I say Ilya Kovalchuk.
For all Penguins fans who would be the better option? Guerin, Kariya or somebody else through a trade? Bill Guerin and Paul Kariya are both good options but they are nowhere near the players they used to be. But they could potentially score 20 goals. In Bill Guerin's case his minutes would have to be decreased and he would have to miss some games to keep his legs fresh. Paul Kariya is four years younger so there may not be an issue of having to limit his minutes and number of games he plays. If Ray Shero and the rest of the Penguins management decide not to bring Bill Guerin back or sign Paul Kariya then they would look to trade for a forward. The question is who do you give up to acquire a forward? It's obvious if this report is true that Ray Shero has at least one more move or maybe two he wants to make before the team reports to training camp next month. What would you do? What should Shero do?

That is the question....
What asset to the Pens own that they could surrender to get a top 6 forward. The only two that come to mind are Gogo, and with Gonchar gone he is more valuable than ever, and Tangredi, but he is the best, and apparently only, real asset the Pens have in WBS.
They do appear to have some good young defenseman in the system that are 2-3 years away, at best, and as such I don’t see them as viable trading options for a season that starts in 5 weeks.
I voted other because, and I love the guy, but Billy G. is through and has been since Christmas and Kariya is too old and too injury-proned to but faith into him.

I trust nothing that comes from Eklund’s website, but I stumped for Stempniak before, and if for some reason they found the cash to do it, I’d be for it now, too.
You should never quote anything from HockeyBuzz.com.
Eklund has about as much credibility as Pat Summerall when it comes to hockey rumors. Basically, none.
As for what to do, I say nothing right now. Let’s see what we have at camp and the beginning of the season. If we’re good with the young guys, then rock on. I certainly wouldn’t hate Kariya, though.

Agreed. Eklund doesn’t “report” anything, he just alludes to his own delusions.
And how the hell could it possibly include Kovalchuk in those rumors? It’s absolutely, positively financially impossible.
Here’s my favorite “eklund” picture. I ran into this guy at the Draft in Montreal in 2009. He was more than happy to smile for the camera.

I thought that when the Pens signed Asham that their cap space had essentially evaporated. If they make a move the Pens will have to move someone on the CURRENT roster in order to make the cap work.

I would love to see a good Winger for Sid.
The best Hockey player in the world really needs someone with the skills and talent to compliment him.

Ideally on a training camp invite, make him earn it. With all these vets stuck without contracts this deep into the summer, perhaps that’s an option now that maybe wouldn’t have been in years past for a lot of guys.

I guess the good thing about Svatos, is that he’s only 28. If he does pan out and plays well, there is plenty of fuel in the tank for a contract extension.

Game Plan
1. Dallas to sign RFA LW James Neal for 2 years, $2.5M/year, trade him to Pens for Gogo and Kennedy — salary wash, solves both teams needs
2 Waive Goddard and sign Paul Mara or Mike Mottau (available if NJ doesn’t resign Kovy) for $750K to replace Gogo — salary wash
3 Sign Lukas Krajicek or Andreas Lilja for $500K to be vet 7th Dman
4. Training camp invites to RW Marek Svatos and/ C Jeff Halpern, to compete with the WBS guys for one $500K position, Tangradi to WBS for needed year playing RW (for Sid next year).
Leaves about $800K for in season call-ups and trade deadline deal(s).
Singing Asham makes this possible, as he replaces Kennedy and makes Goddard expendable.
Sounds like a lot of work…but I hope we do get Svatos, man his goals are bucknasty.
Your not happy with the idea of Lovejoy as # 6 and Engelland as #7?
I feel the hammer comming for TK and GoGo – ( unless performace means anything and they both basically double up every one of their stats. )
I don’t know if the pieces are quite in place for a trade, and I am not GMRS, but either way he has cooked up one hell of a stew to serve up on October 7th!
Don’t know if any of you saw that Pensburgh was referenced today on the NHL homepage for voting Francis onto Mt Pensmore…I really hope that means somewhere, somehow people in the Pens orginazation are reading this blog! IF YOU ARE OUT THERE WE NEED A WINGER, PLEASE GET KARIYA / SVATOS, YOU WILL NOT BE DISSAPOINTED!

Does Ray Shero have Incriminating photos of Joe Nieuwendyk? That’s about the only way he parts with Neal.

I`m down with trading Gogo and Kennedy if SOMEHOW Shero could pull that off….
I`m down with waiving Godawful Godard….
Don`t need Halpern…..Svatos will be signed before the opportunity to extend a tryout comes….I`d be alright with signing Lilja….not sure how Mara could replace Gogo, unless your just talking a body on the roster….
Neal would be sweet, but can`t see it happening…
Good imagination tho!

Trading GoGo and Kennedy at this point is a bad idea.
After a poor injury plagued season by Kennedy, his trade value is at a record low.
GoGo has more value, but now is not the time to trade him. He just finished his first full season, showing flashes of brilliance early on. If he can show more of that this season, his stock should skyrocket. It’s a very bad idea to trade him before he has a chance to show us, and the rest of the NHL, whether those flashes of brilliance was a one time wonder or if they were only the beginning. Unless, of course, you genuinely believe they were a one time wonder, in which case now IS the time to trade him.
I will switch sides
I was originally with Svatos, but the more I think about it the more Patrick O’Sullivan makes sense! His numbers show a lot more than Svatos did as well, he is currently the guy I hope we sign/bring in…
Plus he got traded then released, and idk about yall but that would make me have one big chip on my shoulder.

really?
why in the world would we trade gogo and kennedy. Trading gogo im not even gonna go into because its so stupid. Tk i can understand…i guess. However, this is a contract year and he is only 24. He could have a breakout year, and might come cheap next year. I say invite in guys like svatos and cheechoo into camp and see(if they fight well with our top two lines that is) if we can sign them cheap.
