is Mad Max even going to make the team?

Is Talbot 2 busy making commercials or is he even gonna make the team this year? I wanna know!!!

when I look down the middle I see Sid Geno Staal Adams. No room for Max even on the wings with Rupp, TK, Cookie, Ashem, Tangradi, Dupuis and Godard. Not to mention all the rookies hungry for a spot on the roster.

I know he is a fan favorite and everybody loves him. but is this the end of Max Talbot?

I would hate to see him go but would also be OK with the idea that he plays a split season between WBS and the big club.

I think a lot of people are expecting Staal to be bumped up to 2nd line center and playing with Geno on RW on the 2nd line. That leaves an opening for a 3rd line center. Talbot seems like the perfect man for the job. He’ll have no problems playing with Cook and Asham , or Cook and Kennedy , or Dupuis and Tangradi , or Rupp and ahhhh forget it. You get the idea.

he is also doesn’t qualify to be demoted, so for him to go to WBS he would have go be released and the Pens will not do that.

He’d have to clear waivers. Big difference. Still, I don’t see it happening.

I didnt know the details about his contract and didnt think he could get demoted. Either way they will have alot of energy on those 3rd-4th lines…

They’ll find a spot for Talbot. If Godard is in Pittsburgh on October 7, I’ll be shocked.

by JustinM on Aug 26, 2010 11:13 PM EDT reply actions

exactly.

we're not trading jordan staal.

There is absolutely no chance of Godard being in the lineup over Talbot on 10/7. Especially with the addition of Asham.

by StripesForLife on Aug 27, 2010 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions

Never say never when it’s a game against Philly….

But I agree, hard to see a scenario where Godard’s in the opening day lineup over Talbot if all are healthy.

I’ll take that back since we are playing the Flyers opening day, but beyond that I can’t see Godard being more than the 12th man at best.

by StripesForLife on Aug 27, 2010 1:43 PM EDT up reply actions

I see no reason to get rid of Godard. Someone has to be a healthy scratch, and it’s a good idea to have a heavyweight around for Shelley, King, Orr, etc. By the way, Asham can drop the gloves, but he doesn’t really compare to Godard in that regard.

by Live Chickens on Aug 27, 2010 6:38 AM EDT up reply actions

In a salary cap world the enforcer is becoming obsolete. Godard is the best Pen at what he does, but its just not a skill you want to burn cap money on. Rupp/Asham/Talbot can fill that role in a variety of ways if ever needed.

My money is on Godard being traded, dumped in WBS (is he on a 2 way?) or being placed on waivers.

by spookygeek on Aug 27, 2010 9:06 AM EDT up reply actions

I’m with Live chickens (nice name, btw) I don’t think it’s the worst thing in the world to carry Godard as the 13th forward. He’s tough and plays his role well.

If anything, I think Godard probably deserves more than 4 minutes a night. I don’t think he really hurts the team when he’s out there (as long as he doesn’t take minor penalties).

Everyone thought Rupp’s signing, plus the emergence of Bissonnette would make Godard a goner for sure last year, but he survived. Given the special skill Godard brings (punching other large men in the head) I think he sticks again.

Talbot makes the team and wins the Hart. Book it.

He’ll do at least 50% of that.

The Hart part is taken, sorry :)

He can’t NOT make the team. Like someone said before, he’s under contract. I think he had a rough go last year for a number of reasons. That surgery to start the season wasn’t ideal, he didn’t come back as quick as he’d have hoped, there was still a lot of overhype for a guy who really doesn’t score that often but just happened to net two in Game 7 against the Wings AND he kept getting dinged up when he did return.

So commercials or endorsements aside, I think time was really the only thing obstructing Max in 2009. Now that he’s had enough to rest up, he can come back this season and do his acceptable 15g, 20a season we’ve all been waiting for.

Agreed.

Superstar Max Talbot will make the team, and I have a hunch he may start the year playing with Malkin. Since Dupuis has good chemistry with Sid, and played solid hockey last year, I say he bumps up to the 1st line.

Line 1: Kunitz-Crosby-Dupuis
Line 2: Geno-Staal- ??

The ?? Spot on line 2 is going to have to be filled by someone who is not really a legit top-6 player. The Pens have 3 ways to go on this: Sign someone new, promote someone from Wiles-barre, or in-house. Since they can’t afford to sign a top-6 forward, and don’t want to throw an untested rookie into the fire (though maybe one of the young guns may get promoted later on in the season), I think their only option is in-house.

Who, then will get promoted to play with Geno? Their choices are Talbot, TK, Cooke, Asham, Rupp or Adams. Rupp and Adams are 4th-liners so take them off. I wouldn’t be surprised to see any of Talbot, TK, Cooke, and Asham playing on that line at some point. Talbot, however, is the only one with proven chemistry playing with Malkin (see: the Pens cup run!), so I’d give him the nod to start.

Superstar!

Nobody puts superstar in the corner.

by spookygeek on Aug 27, 2010 1:54 PM EDT reply actions

Shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

Max isn’t going anywhere. With all of the scenarios that people are projecting for the upcoming season Max has a place somewhere in there in each one. I think we’re pretty well set with the team we have, and I really don’t see us making anymore moves until maybe the trade deadline depending on how the season is going.

Is he a top 6? I don’t think…but the guy has a place on the Pens roster, and he’ll contribute no matter what his role is.

sorry if I upset a few people with the notion of Talbot not making the team. I guess he really is a superstar. 2 goals in game 7 SCF will live on forever.

Love to see the Pens passion here!!
Thanks for the feedback

This is stupid. I watched Game 7 the other night against Detroit and it reminded me how good Talbot can be. Not just scoring goals, but just his overhaul hustle and ability to set people up and get to the puck.

I berated him a lot last year but he did come off of shoulder surgery, and you are right that he makes too many commercials and I think the hockey Gods got tired of his “Supa-Star” catch phrase, but I think he’ll be back and super hungry to play and show what we’re used to.

Case closed.

Max & TK will get their shot next to Sid & Staalkin…

Besides, he’s still one of the best bottom 6 players we have & Shero’s not gonna let him test the waiver wire.

Is it October yet?
