Bill Guerin, latino?
I stumbled upon this today after reading another fanpost regarding Billy G. I had no idea he was latino, let alone the NHL's first. It sounds fishy to me. Is this true or is someone playing with Wiki again? Bill seems like an all-american kinda guy.
Billy G's Wiki page
Also, anyone hear anything about his status for next year? "Bill Guerin Rangers" comes up on Google that it is a popular search, and I got worried. Nothing official from anybody as of yet though, and i'm 99% sure he isn't coming back to Pittsburgh.
The content expressed in fanposts does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff here at Pensburgh.com. FanPosts are opinions expressed by fans of various teams throughout the league but may be more Pittsburgh-centric for obvious reasons.

Hmmm….I always through Tony Granato was the first Latino player in the league.
Or maybe Chico Resch ;-)

Update – the Granatos are of Italian descent, apparently.

Guerin started playing ice hockey because his mother, a native of Nicaragua, wanted to find an extracurricular activity for her son…she came to the US at the age of 18 to attend college…“She says I spoke Spanish before English, although I don’t remember,” says Guerin…Bill went to Nicaragua three times before 1979, but never since
Bill seems like an all-american kinda guy.
I’d say that is still the case.

NHL.com had something that said that Guerin “seemingly” was the first player of hispanic origin in one of their hockey is for everyone pages.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
What the hell does that even mean? Either you are or you aren’t.

Maybe it means they aren’t sure if any previous player had at least some hispanic heritage that wasn’t publicized at the time.

I know you didn’t mean this to be offensive but Latinos in the U.S. are “all American” — “American” doesn’t mean white. Whatever seems American about him (maybe his freedom loving personality, or his patriotic dedication to Team USA) is true of Americans of all colors and backgrounds.

This.
Although, it would’ve been hard to guess that Billy was of Hispanic origin. I’ve actually known this for some time, but it didn’t seem like a big deal which is a little sad considering he’s supposedly the first Latino in the NHL.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Exactly
Well said. “American: means white”……….if you live in Arizona, at least.
I am sure no one would ask Billy G for his papers.

I don’t thing Bigg meant anything racial by it… Probably All-American like one of em stereotypical College jocks… As American As Apple Pie kinda thing…
Is it October yet?
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
Pretty much. Coming from Wilbraham Mass, I would have never gave a thought to him being spanish or latino

for the better part of my hockey watching career, I’ve been following the Pens via reading reports & listening to games without visuals. I can’t tell one player from another for a few years… To me, it didn’t matter if players were black, white, yellow, green or blue… Hell, Tanger could have a second head & I still wouldn’t be able to tell him from Adam…

The ladies are swooning over a two-headed Tanger. Think of all that hair!

He does, but a two-headed Tanger? Ew.
Maybe 4 eyes would help him hit the net.

Yea. I didnt mean that to be racial in anyway. I just cant even picture him speaking spanish. Thats all I meant. Sorry to anyone who I may have offended.

No Worries
I was refering more in general terms—not to you—that perhaps, someone who thinks this way, feels that way. Not you, personally. This is a huge problem because of the new Arizona
immigration law—it has divided alot of folks.
I never thought Billy G was Latino, either—like you said, coming from Wilbraham, Mass!

Yeah no worries, I know what you meant — we all slip and use “American” to mean “white english speaking” sometimes because we hear that message everywhere.
It’s an interesting fact that Guerin might have been the first Latino in hockey. He certainly doesn’t draw any attention to it, but it’s cool that we had a historic player on our team. I really hope he comes back… even knowing other players might be better for the team, I just can’t let go because he’s so awesome. It would feel wrong if he played for another team.
