SB Nation Pittsburgh Editor's Pick
Bonne Fête, Capitaine!
Just as I did a Geno Fanshot for his birthday, I'm doing one for our very old and out of his prime Sidney Crosby.
Today, our captain turns 23 and has accomplished very little in his career. We still love him even though all he's done is lead his team to a Cup and his entire country to a gold medal in five years as a pro. He'll never live up to the hype.
OK, enough joking. Sid is the man.
The Best of Sid.
2005-2006 (Sid's rookie year)
There were so many firsts in this year for Sid. First point, first goal, first hat trick, first shootout goal, first (and youngest to) 100 points that I had to pick three.
I was just going to do Sid's first goal and 100th point, but I felt it would be wrong to not include this.It was his first game against the team he grew up cheering for.
Man, it was loud.
2006-2007 (Sid's Art Ross/Lester/Hart Season):
2007-2008 (Sid's Injury plaqued season/playoff learning experience):
I debated back and forth about what the first video should be. Originally, I thought the obvious choice would be the Winter Classic shootout goal, but this is the Best of Sid not What Made the NHL Happy.
One of the best re-directions I've ever seen.
What a clutch playoff performance by Sid. The Pens were absolutely crushed in the first two games of the series and then the captain got them right back in it with this performance.
2008-2009 (the Year of the Cup):
Sid became the first player in NHL history to get his 100th goal, 200th assist, and 300th point all in the same game.
I thought about putting another one of Sid's playoff performances in here, since this one was in a losing effort. But I felt like this performance (much like game 2 against Ottawa in 2010 and game 3 against Detroit in 2008) was one of Sid's first real "captainly" playoff performances. He literally carried the team one his back for two games and who knows how the rest of the series would've gone if Sid would of played just average for the first two games.
____________________________________________________________________________________
How can I not include this moment?
___________________________________________________________________________________
2009-2010 (Sid's Rocket Season):
After a bad performance in game 1 by the Pens, Sid took over the game.
__________________________________________________________________________________________
Well, even though I'm American, I couldn't leave out the moment that some would argue has been the biggest of Crosby's career thus far.
___________________________________________________________________________________
Sid Highlights
_________________________________________________________________________________________
Sid off the ice.
A lot of Sid's competitiveness shines through in this video.
I used this one in the Geno Fanshot as well. I've always felt like there's been limited access to the two headed monster off the ice.
A lot of foreshadowing goes on in this one.
The content expressed in fanposts does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff here at Pensburgh.com. FanPosts are opinions expressed by fans of various teams throughout the league but may be more Pittsburgh-centric for obvious reasons.

Bonne Fete, and ..
.. Happy birthday Sid the Kid! (gotta be billingual.. it’s Canadian!)
I wished him through my brainwaves at 11pm ET. I wonder who wished him first? :)
I don’t know which of the gold medal or the Stanley Cup is the most important. I know the Olympics come once every 4 years, but still.. Sid himself said (in the Pizza Hut Hotstove or Hotseat or something of the sort) that both were just as important.
Loved all the pictures and videos, I’d say the Stanley Cup and the Olympic wins tie for my favourite.
What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)
I wonder who wished him first? :)
Gary Bettman….allegedly.
Sid himself said (in the Pizza Hut Hotstove or Hotseat or something of the sort) that both were just as important.
That’s just Sid’s robot speak. I’m sure he has a favorite. How could he say the SC is more important and piss Canada off or vice versa? If I had to guess which one he prefers, I’m going to say the SC because the teams they put together for the Olympics are dream teams who are expected to win. Hell, Sid didn’t “dominate” like people thought he would and they still won.
Loved all the pictures and videos, I’d say the Stanley Cup and the Olympic wins tie for my favourite.
Thanks!
Mine too. Even though I’m American, there’s just something about seeing your favorite player have a legendary, career-defining moment like that live.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Well he did say the Cup first.. then he kind of paused and asked if he could say both, and then he answered “both”. I’m not sure I could choose either.
Gary Bettman? I would hope it’s his parents or sister, or his girlfriend (if if IF he has one).. or our brainwave-messages.
What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)
No lol
I meant that Gary Bettman beat us girls (and all the 14 year olds that dream about marrying him) and sent him a brainwave message first!
Maybe you’re right. I bet he’s just glad to have both. Not a lot of players get both in their career.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
or his girlfriend (if if IF he has one)
I hear all this shit about other Pens and girls, but never anything about Sid. Sometimes, I wonder if he really is gay (which would actually be quite interesting and cool, considering he’s a superstar and all). Then I think that he probably is just enjoying the fact that he can get a bunch of girls and is just really private (i.e. smart) about it.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
I don’t know, and I’m honestly not as interested as other people are about his personal life. If I was an insanely talented hockey player, I wouldn’t want people to know all this stuff about me.
I still like to think we’re first, since we timed it and all. Bettman was probably busy rolling in his money and trying to get an expansion team in Vegas. Sid’s 14-year-old imaginary fiancées (poor birthday boy) are either asleep, or are too busy staring at him or doing something creepy, so they were a few seconds later than us.
I wouldn’t mind losing to Mario though, in addition to those people I mentioned above.
What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)
I don’t know, and I’m honestly not as interested as other people are about his personal life.
When you google him there’s this board about his girlfriend. I went their once and they were nuts over there. Honestly, as long as he and Geno and Staal get us enough points to get us to and allow us to prosper in the playoffs, he can date whomever the hell he wants. Just give me more banners at Consol!
I wouldn’t mind losing to Mario though, in addition to those people I mentioned above.
Dude, no one has ever lost to Mario Lemieux and turned around and said “I lost to Mario, I must really suck!” It would actually be an honor to lose to 66.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
It would actually be an honor to lose to 66.
..which is why I stated the obvious by adding him in my “wouldn’t mind” list
he can date whomever the hell he wantsThat’s the approach I take, as long as he’s happy. So that means no puckbunnies and gold-diggers.
What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)
Ok well,
Mario, Jack Johnson, Army, and any past or present Penguins (excluding Hossa).
Plus all those guys Sid played ball hockey with for the Cup.
Plus his family
What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)
So you’re fine with losing to Chris Bourque and Kyle Beach?
There is a knack to flying: it's learning how to throw yourself at the ground and miss.

Private and Smart
He puts Hockey and all first; his personal life comes second. He is building his career and only focused on that.
He has plenty of time…….

Love It! Love It! Love It!
I was hoping you were doing this, as I wished him Happy B-day on the other blog, then saw you responded to that. These are simply great!
I love them all but I really love the one of him and Superstar in Sids parent’s basement. That is sooooooooooo funny!
I am sure he does have a favorite but I would guess it’s the Gold Medal over the SC…….maybe they are equal but unless we know him very privately we proabably never know.

Anyone else wonders what he’s gonna be busy with today?
Is it October yet?
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
I bet you he does something pretty quiet (dinner, maybe a club with his friends), considering what he did last year…
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Fishing
Definitely fishing.
I’d like to think the team throws him a party, because I know the most he’d do for himself is a BBQ or .. a fishing/golf trip.
What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)
You're probably right
but I think he fishes every day…at least that’s what he said in the Mark Madden interview last week.

amazing clips, very nice post, cheers!
I forget how amazing of a player he is….until I watch him on film…
Every day is a great day for hockey!
Thanks!
I forget how amazing of a player he is….until I watch him on film…
I know right? Putting all of the best clips of him (which was really hard to only pick two for each season, by the way) really put it into perspective just how many great games/moments this guy has in a year. Lol just when I thought I couldn’t be more impressed with Sid…
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
correction: the CUP is my fav of 2009, thats my fav of 2010...ugh years go bye...

I was THIS close to putting in this video for 2009. I think it’s the best deflection I’ve ever seen. Sid watched the puck go flying past him, followed it with his eyes as it ricocheted off the boards, and deflected the puck twice into the net all the while keeping his stick below the cross bar.
And this video for 2010. After a horrible start by the team, and an even worse giveaway by Sid, he took over the game. I remember, after he scored for the HT, thinking to myself (this game took place about a month before the Olympics) “man, the Americans are screwed.”
The one handed goal was great, but I think it was more luck then anything. It’s not like I’m saying that Sid’s speed through the zone didn’t help him, but the puck did go off a D man’s foot. Also, it seemed like the shot was kind of luck as well. I wouldn’t put it past Sid to have purposely placed the shot through the 5 hole, but it looked a little lucky to me.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Wow
I freaking miss hockey!!! I’m pumped for next season!

Of course you can, but keep it down. We wouldn’t want to make the Cup-less Cap fans jealous.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Screw Cap fans….I’m trying to make Pens fans jealous! The 1:37 mark is when Sid skates by and waves the Cup at me. I could have died a happy man that night.

What was the name of that guy that snuck into the locker room and got pics with everyone (including the Cup!) that I would love to have a pic with?
Seriously, this is a rec’tacular post. You did a great job.
Why, thank you! As I commented earlier, only choosing two moments of Sid’s best per season really put into perspective just how great/consistent this guy really is. The actual post only took me an hour to put together, but I must’ve spent forever deciding which moment to put over another for each season.

I know that the players are trained to block all that fan stuff out, but how exactly does one get trained to do that? I guess it’s just a mental game.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Yeah, I guess it’s just something you have to do, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to play the game without thinking about the thousands of people right there watching you. Of course there are exceptions to this, like the story of Staal and the Caps fans that I won’t bore you with again, or Mike Milbury beating a guy with his shoe.

Prick is right.
In fact, I would have other choice words for that guy. I’ve actually had that pic for a while and noticed the douche on the glass later.
Those lucky fans right there in front, taking those
pcis—who is that?
The chick in blue taking the pics is Sid’s sister and then in the white are Mrs. Lemieux and their daughter…the oldest, I think. The rest are families of other players, I guess.
Is that PAYD, or was PAYD somewhere else? I know he went to gamed 7.
That’s not him…that’s definitely a Pens fan. I think PAYD was acutally farther up if I remeber from the team Cup picture (so jealous).
Did you go up there, too?
Please. I wish. No, that’s just a pic that I found on the internet…and happened to save it now knowing some guy was flipping off Sid, I actually thought it was kind of funny
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
It’s funny and sad at the same time.
I wondered who the guy in the blue shirt was. I have seen pictures of Sid’s sister before—it just didn’t look like her.
Oh, the memories….but I am thinking positive for the next time he holds the Cup!

I'm pretty sure
she’s 10 years younger than him, so she’s 13 now. In the interview, she was talking about going to Shattuck’s “in the future”, so I guess she’ll be going there next year.
Stephanie Lemieux went/is going there too, and so will Austin

I’ve always assumed Sid is not very tech savvy. Like, he’s dedicated so much of his life to being the best at hockey that he’s never learned the home keys in a keyboarding class. These are the funny things I think about while I run a blog and he makes millions.

For his birthday,
I’m getting decked up in Sid stuff.
SC87 t-shirt under my grossly oversized Crosby team Canada jersey, jeans that I got from Pittsburgh that I wore to my only Pens game, and a Pens hat to top it off.
As much as I hate admitting this, I’ll be rooting for Sid’s childhood team too since I’ll have the red and white jersey and the blue jeans and t-shirt.
I delayed my birthday party to have it on Geno’s birthday (couldn’t have it this week), and made everyone sing “Happy Birthday” three times: for me, Geno, and Sid.. so that part’s covered.

you have the most adorablest kitties…
Is it October yet?
Just so I never have to answer this again. I'm from Singapore so whenever you see me online, I'm either sleep deprived or just waking up.
They certainly agree with you. This is what they were all doing around 5 pm Saturday. I told them to smile ‘cause it was Sid’s birthday (I know, I’m a goofball). The best reaction I got was from Doods (Inky Doodles) on the right. She climbed our of her box, walked over and demanded food.

Happy 23 Sid!
It’s my husbands 60th today as well. Since Sid came to the pens it’s the only way I remember my husbands. :) so true! I am all decked out in my Crosby cup changes everything shirt, crosby earrings and Crosby bracelet and we walked around KingOf Prussia mall (Philadelphia) hah! We will have plenty more cups in the burgh but Philly missed their only chance
Got Crosby?

Whoa.
I don’t usually read horoscopes, but I just was with a friend who does, and while looking for mine I glanced at the “If today is your birthday” part. Since it’s kind of my idol’s birthday today, I decided to take a look. There’s some stuff that could predict the upcoming season (took out some of the extras talking about his love life):
IF TODAY IS YOUR BIRTHDAY: This year, you push the envelope much more than in the past. Others become reactive, specifically one person who lets you know what he or she thinks. A theme of the unexpected runs through the year. You will experience many more highs and lows than in the past… If you are single, you could meet someone very exciting. As fast as this person appears is as fast as he or she will disappear. That doesn’t mean that he or she won’t reappear again… If you are attached, the two of you will see each other in a new light. The more you reveal, the more dynamic the bond will become. CANCER reads you cold.
Anyone know what the last sentence means? Because I’m a cancer, and my horoscope said:
CANCER (June 22-July 22)
Your smiling ways draw quite a few people. You might wonder which way is the best way to head on a personal matter. Someone you admire surprises you. .
The Toronto Star’s role as Cupid is confirmed.
What would we have to do to get Crosby on the Leafs...?
Wishful thinking never ends in Leaf Nation. For now, Go Leafs! (and Pens!)
PS
As I said, I don’t take these horoscope things too seriously, but since we have nothing else to do, here’s what I’m hoping:
All I can think of for “pushing the envelope” is scoring more, because it’s all I can think of that’s out of his comfort zone.
“Someone you admire surprises you” = come-from-behind victory in the SCF!!!

Sounds good to me.

Sid's in Toronto
for the Canadian Open.. I don’t know if he was here yesterday though.
He met Federer, and wants to meet Nadal too.

The stars are aligned! Haha pretty cool. I’ve read on astrology; interesting stuff if you’re into those things.

I wish
Knowing me, I’d probably faint when I see him. Then he’d have to take me to the hospital. That… wouldn’t be fun.
The cake he got for Federer looks pretty good though

Didn’t Tiger used to hang out with Federer? Please, Sid, don’t be like Tiger.

I think one time
Sid said one of his non-hockey idols was Tiger Woods. I’m reading these mini-bios on players invited to the Team Canada Olympic training camp, and a whole bunch of people said they idolised Tiger. But in that book, Sid said he looked up to Michael Jordan, so we’re probably safe.
To be fair, Nadal hangs out with Federer, and I don’t think he’s so bad (although I don’t follow tennis).
I remember when I used to like Tiger…

Aw
I hope I didn’t ruin it
We should comment till it gets to 187
One of my friends, a Nadal fan, wanted me to go to the Rogers Cup (Canadian Open), but I wasn’t interested. I think I will take her up on her offer :)
