Shero seems to like former Islanders!
I’m not sure I see the point in signing more bottom six personnel. Oh well, at least it’s something to talk about.
Don’t think so. Depth is going to be key. This probably means either Talbot, Kennedy or Asham starts out on the 4th line, but given injuries it won’t stay that way for long.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
I think this could be a good signing. When Comrie is healthy hes a decent player, problem his he hasnt really been healthy since 05’-06’. For $500,000 though, for a guy with the potential to score 20+ goals, thats hard to pass up. I’m starting to get nervous about Staal at this point. I know the Pens are saying he will be ready for the opener, but the fact that they signed an offensive center over a defensive center makes me a little nervous.
by genomachine-O on Sep 3, 2010 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions
Wouldn’t be nervous at all, this is 100% non-related to Staal’s situation.
As Dreger tweeted- Comrie took less to sign in Pittsburgh because it was a chance to play with Crosby. I don’t think they have any designs of making him a center.
And, as it stands, Staal is fine too. Don’t read too much into it. He’s not where he needs to be training wise, but the foot is fine.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
Ummm ...
I believe he said “rumour”, not “rumor”.
Just sayin’ …
Shero gets an A. Burkie gets a checkmark.
By which you of course mean the “proper” spelling of the word ;)
Shero gets an A. Burkie gets a checkmark.
I was just teasing you. I spell words like favourite with an ‘ou’ too. It just makes more sense to me, for some reason.
Fully aware of the teasing. If there’s anything I need to change about myself, it’s that I take things seriously more often.
Although I should say that as a Canadian living in Pittsburgh, my ability to spell has been completely screwed up. And it’s complicated by the fact that I study theories of language use, which tends to end up in a sort of “anyone can do anything however they’d like” sort of free-for-all. In the end I hold onto what I can, but I do have this habit of inserting u’s where they have no business being. Kind of comical, really!
More to the point, though … My original comment no longer makes sense because we no longer have either a “rumour” or a “rumor” on our hands. It’s official! We have yet another guy-on-our-team-that-we’re-not-quite-sure-what-to-make-of. Let the rampant speculation about trades &/or lineups begin!
Shero gets an A. Burkie gets a checkmark.
I grew up reading American fiction, writers like Ann Rice, Stephen King, Neil Gaiman, so my spelling always slanted to the American way of not using the U’s…
I flunked many English papers here because of that… Am Sad…

Ahh… was typing my shot to this story… NVM
I think he’s pretty decent… Maybe a bit past his prime but we’ve worked with worse on Sid’s wing (Poni, Feds)
Was hoping that Shero kept the cap space for some flexibility…

Not bad...
This is going to be a good signing I do believe. Top-6 guy easy. He’s been stuck in Oiler land so we all know there’s not a lot of help on that roster. Kunitz-Crosby-Comrie could be a whole lot of fun to watch.

Yeah, Comrie turns 30 before the season begins, so it isn’t like he is that old.
Hopefully he can open up a little more space for a guy like Crosby.

Just a thought...
I see some questionable comments on here wondering who in the world this guy is? This is a good pickup for our boys. Look at his past, have to feel bad for him. Minus a good run with Ottawa and one good year (as a team) in Edmonton, he’s played on crap teams with no supporting cast. He’s fast, he has a laser-fast release, and, and most importantly, dare I say it, he’s a shoot first type of guy. Should look real good skating down the wing next to number 87. I know, I know…he’s a centre…..he’ll play wing on this team.
by Wags24 on Sep 3, 2010 11:42 AM EDT reply actions
I know, I was surprised to see Comrie’s goal scoring career totals. For some reason I always imagined his game as a more playmaking type game.
He does have a swagger and some skill. Two badly needed things on this team for the forwards.
If Comrie stays healthy, it’s a really solid move.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
Yeah, and Puck Daddy reported Sid told him he’d be on his left wing….what about Kunitz?

I believe Kunitz is versatile enough to play RW.
Or maybe Kunitz bumps down to the 2nd line with Geno/Staal and Dupuis rounds out the top line with Sid/Duffman.

Wow, Kunitz-Staal-Malkin sounds awesome.

the switch from LW/RW or RW/LW is a lot bigger deal than most would think. I agree that Kunitz and his style of play, might be able to make the switch. Its quite a difference tho. A prime example is Dupuis, when he is moved to the left side, he hasnt been nearly as effective.
by genomachine-O on Sep 3, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions
I don't buy this...
I see what you mean, but for a guy like Kunitz who’s made a career off being flexible, it won’t be an issue. He’ll play anywhere, anytime, against anyone. He’s a good dude and he can handle it, no doubt.
Wing is like using forks at different restaurants. They’re all a bit different, but how you use it is the same.
by Wags24 on Sep 3, 2010 12:23 PM EDT up reply actions
It’s more like trying to brush your teeth with the other hand. It’s doable, but it takes some getting used to.
All that said, I’d rather see Kunitz bumped to second, than switched to right wing. It makes more sense to keep Kunitz and Dupuis on the wings they’re used to, rather than switching them up.
Here’s hoping we stop the “doing things with the other hand” theme at brushing teeth…

I agree with Skyff — some guys can switch LW/RW with ease, some are better on one side, some look lost on the other side.
I could be wrong but I thought Kunitz played some RW in his Anaheim days, which was why I had it in my head that he may be able to make a shift better than most. That could be wrong though.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
Kunitz plays everywhere...
In college, it wasn’t unusual to him playing Winger and/or Center. he’s just that versatile. He’s a grinder, grinder’s will figure it out. Finesse guys, they struggle switching a bit more. Why? Who knows.
by Wags24 on Sep 3, 2010 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions
Kunitz seems like a guy that could make the switch but you never know. But It is quite a bit different. A lefty playing RW takes passes on the back hand, make a lot of passes on the backhand, when they are playing along the boards they are on the back hand. Not every player can switch wings.
by genomachine-O on Sep 3, 2010 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions
No way...
Not even close. I can’t do a thing with my left hand. Throw, eat, write, anything. I don’t know why, just can’t do it. Weird. With that being said, I can play LD, RD, RW and LW. Doesn’t matter. Positioning will come. Put an NHLer on the ice, unless they’re European (and dang it I mean that ina good way), and they’ll figure out that position. Center, that’s a whole new beast…a lot more responsibility on the ice.
by Wags24 on Sep 3, 2010 12:35 PM EDT up reply actions
I’m inclined to agree with this too. Plus everything’s so fluid, LW’s end up on the right side and vice-versa sometimes. As long as they play off the guys out there and how the play develops, it’s all gravy.
Also, I think the generalization here that Kunitz and Sid have to, must and WILL play together at all times is a little too strong. It wouldn’t be the worst idea in the world to have Kunitz as 2L with Malkin and/or Staal.
Kunitz and Crosby play well together, but they’re not tied at the hip or anything.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
The problem is
who is Sid going to play with?
You can’t just leave your best player out in the cold…
The idea of a Kunitz-Staal-Malkin line sounds great, but it just seems unrealistic.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Sid can take care of himself!
No really, if all the hype about Comrie is valid, a line of Comrie-Crosby-Dupuis seems solid.
Still, why should he have to take care of himself when you can stick Kuni on his line?
Still don’t see it happening…
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
beat me by just a smidge….
Sid’s line looks really lonely as it is… It’s one thing to make sure Staalkin has talent to work with but Sid’s not superman… He’s awesome as heck & I wouldn’t cross him on the ice but he can’t do it all on his own…

It’ll also draw attention away from his line, effectively giving him easier opponents.
Imagine Sid always playing against the 2nd best defense pairing.
That is exactly why I’m so worried about Malkin. He almost always gets the second parings, yet he’s still pretty inconsistent.
And, yes, I remember when Sid was hurt.
So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.
Your lines, as of today?
Kunitz-Crosby-Comrie
Dupuis-Staal-Malkin
Cooke-Talbot-Asham
Rupp-Adams-TK
And maybe come playoff time….
Kunitz-Crosby-Comrie
Dupuis-Malkin- ?
Cooke-Staal-Kennedy
Talbot/Rupp-Adams-Asham

Guys come on…I love TK and Max. They’re stinken awesome. Skill alone Comrie runs away from them. The rest of the intangibles can help close the gap, but I don’t see a battle between those three…not unless Comrie struggles BIG TIME playing alongside Sid.
by Wags24 on Sep 3, 2010 12:25 PM EDT up reply actions
TK has more skills than most give him credit for. If he gets it rolling, he’s a match for Comrie I reckon.
The questions is whether or not he can get it rolling, though.
BIG question.
Last year he put himself in the Bylsma doghouse with his play. I like TK, don’t know if it’s there though. This is a team that is, dare I say, filling out quite nicely. He’s going to have to keep earning his spot. I like TK but he’s kind of like a Rat Terrier, fast, runs all over the place, sometimes tough to follow, and darn it, has a boat-load of energy. He has to control it though.
by Wags24 on Sep 3, 2010 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions
My only consideration is potentially swapping TK with Talbot in that situation, if only because Cooke and TK have that third-line chemistry that existed last season. But, since Staal is no longer on there, might as well blow up the whole thing and put the pieces in different places. Not worried either way.

if Staal and Malkin are together I would expect to see Cooke on the LW there. I think the 3rd line chemistry you speak of was more between Cooke and Staal than Cooke and Kennedy
by genomachine-O on Sep 3, 2010 3:15 PM EDT up reply actions
This combo?
See, and I’m thinking it was Staal & Kennedy that had the good chemistry. Who knows? I all can say for sure is that all three work well together.
You guys need to get excited about this! This is a great signing!
Comrie can play any position, has good wheels, some grit, and took a paycut to win a Cup! (or get out of Edmonton, lol).
He was injured or sick (missed TONS of time with mono) for most of last year, but if you look up his career stats, he`s capable of putting up Kunitz type numbers (20 g, 60pts).
I only worry about RUMOURS (us Canucks spell it like that too!) that he is not a great locker room guy. But hey, he`ll be bringing Hilary Duff with him, so he should be a pretty popular guy! LOL!
Seriously though, this more than makes up for Billy G`s departure, we get younger, faster, and I think Comrie will score just as much. He can also ensure Staal doesn`t have to rush back. Then, when Jordan is healthy, STAALKIN can be reborn and Comrie can play 3rd line center, OR Comrie can move up and play with Sid and Kuni…
This is a major coup by Shero, IMO. I feel alot better about our forwards corps and the possible combo`s than I did yesterday….

Ive had some worries about his motivation to play hockey. given the fact that he signed a dirt cheap contract, when he could have just retired and lived the life makes me think that he really did do it for a shot at a cup.
And I don’t think he’s inherited it yet.
Plus, just because he’s filthy rich doesn’t mean he’s going to lay on the couch.

Right. Genomachine-O said he could have just retired, not should have. He’s not old, but he’s not super-young, and he’s been hurt. It would have been a big surprise for him to hang them up, but if he retired saying that he wanted to be able to play with his grandchildren when he gets old, then I don’t think anyone could have said much.
Think of Terrell Davis and you’ll get what I’m saying.
exactly my point, hes not playing still because he needs the money.

My first reaction was confusion…
…but now I get it. I like the signing. My mind changed in the span of 10 minutes. Sure, he may be hurt half the season, but for $500k who really cares. It’s a classic low-risk, medium-to-high-reward deal.

Duff a distraction?
By the media, maybe…inside the locker room, not a chance in the world.
I think lots of people still forget that this team is owned by one of the most respected hockey players to ever touch the ice. He won’t let anything get out of control. Besides, what player is going to come into a great situation and do something stupid? This team won’t let anything get that far.
Besides, for those of you who live in Pittsburgh, how many are now going to be scanning the boxes during the game? Come on, don’t lie.

The Pens are way too smart for that… It’s something nice for us fans to talk about but the players are unlikely to bite on this.
