I’ll answer both questions with one player: TK!

Breakout: TK 80,26-27-53
Disappointment: Tangradi

by Lindas1st on Sep 7, 2010 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

The first part of this is easy for me: this is going to be the year where we see Kris Letang really improve; I’ve been saying that all summer. Gonch is gone and we need someone to step up on offense.
The second part is a little more difficult, but I don’t think Dupes breaks the 10 goal mark this year. Maybe some of you have hard time seeing that happening, but with the addition of Comrie, Dupuis may see less top 6 time.

So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.

by PensFan8725 on Sep 7, 2010 11:54 AM EDT reply actions

I'm not sure that's true about Dupuis

Even supposing Comrie plays with Sid, I think there’s still room for Dups to have a top-6 role. The lines could be something like this:
Kunitz-Crosby-Comrie
Dupuis-Staal-Malkin

by cyroose on Sep 7, 2010 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions

:)

They continue to say that they are making the second line
Cooke – Staal – Malkin
so if Comrie takes Crosbys left side and they move Kunitz to the RW then Dupuis will be on the third line a whole lot this year and wont be hitting no 10 goal mark ;) But that is ok because Dupuis is great on a checking line! Thats where he should be anyways!

by MrChadysPens on Sep 7, 2010 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions

Of course Dupuis would get 10 goals even on the 3rd line. He’s not completely talentless. Nor are the guys he’d be playing with (Asham and Talbot, I’m guessing).

by Skyff on Sep 8, 2010 4:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Duper

Why does everyone have this irrational love for Dupuis?

Breakout Player: Comrie. He has above average skills and is a solid scrappy player (Check his record on hockey-fights). He can be a great linemate for Sid. And for 500,000; how can you NOT expect him to have a breakout year, hes playing with house money; play well; get resigned to continue to put up gaudy numbers next to Sid and Geno.

Bust: Take your pick. Dupuis, Talbot and TK are all in for a rough season in my eyes. First, they are all up on their contracts, they are all borderline players, and I think it will wear on their nerves and game. Its put up or ship out for these three.

by Strikers09 on Sep 9, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Why does everyone have this irrational love for Dupuis?

What is there not to love? He’s a likable guy and he puts it all out there every game, every shift. On top of that, he’s a well rounded and versatile player, with the ability to play on any line from 1 to 4. He’s by no means fantastic offensively, but he does have a very good shot. His defensive game is very solid, and he’s a presence on the PK.
At the very fair price tag of $1.4mil, he’s the kind of player any team should be glad to have. You can plug him in any hole in the lineup, and in case of injuries, move him around as needed and expect him to perform decently.

by Skyff on Sep 9, 2010 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I love Duper, but were you saying that when he had 0 points in the 2009 playoffs?

So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.

by PensFan8725 on Sep 9, 2010 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions

Nah, I sure didn’t. But the guy went out and practically reinvented himself after that and worked his behind off all summer, that’s gotta count for something. His good season this year wasn’t just a miracle come out of the blue, it was a product of hard work.

by Skyff on Sep 10, 2010 12:26 PM EDT up reply actions

Trying to get some new material out there and at least a fresh topic from the usual things that have been going on all off-season really.

My breakout player for this year is Goligoski. He’ll have a great chance on the power-play unit to rack up some points and the additions of the defensive players will take a lot of tough minutes, so he can focus on playing his game, and probably against easy competition. Goligoski will likely be the fans’ whipping boy no matter what he does, but I see a big season from him.

My disappointment for the year, unfortunately, I think is going to be Talbot or Kennedy. I bet one of them doesn’t finish the season here, and it could be the last full year for both of them. My overall disappointment for the general fans is going to be Tangradi, who won’t get more than a dozen NHL games this year, and won’t look like Rick Tocchet or Kevin Stevens when he does.

Barring an injury bug, or something else drastic I don’t know if Tangradi gets a dozen NHL games.

My overall disappointment for the general fans is going to be Tangradi…

Yeah, that was my thought.
I’m starting to think we were sold a bad bill of goods with Tangradi.

by Lindas1st on Sep 7, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Way too early to say that. He just turned 21 and was dealing with a bad hand injury and some concussions last year.

If he stays healthy, earns more minutes in the minors and produces points I think it can be a positive year for Tangradi and his development.

He’s got the size, hands and knack to score, that’s why he was a high pick, played on Team USA, etc. It’s just going to take a little to get him up to speed of the pro game and hopefully see an improvement in the first few strides and some quickness.

If Tangradi doesn’t make the team out of camp next year I’d be really concerned about his long-term future.

Understood

My problem is with the way the team sees him now. It seems to me that they don’t think he’ll be an above average top 6 foward (consistent 30 goal guy) anymore. Which I always thought was their projection for him eventually . Maybe I was mistaken about their projections of him.

by Lindas1st on Sep 7, 2010 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions

I think they still believe that he can be that guy. I haven’t read anything that says otherwise.

So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.

by PensFan8725 on Sep 7, 2010 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions

The signing of Comrie was a red flag to me.I know it’s just 1 season, so maybe the team thinks Tangradi can use one more season in the AHL.

by Lindas1st on Sep 7, 2010 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions

True, but it also could’ve been that they told Comrie he could have a tryout and he told them he would sign for the league minimum.
I wouldn’t read too much into the Comrie signing just yet. However, just as I believe before the Asham/Comrie signings, Tangradi won’t make the team out of camp. He’ll be a call-up during the season, and, who knows, he may show them something.

So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.

by PensFan8725 on Sep 7, 2010 12:21 PM EDT up reply actions

My problem with Tangradi is probably me. Sometimes I view Pens prospects through the Sid/Geno/Staal prism where 18-20 year-olds come in and have an instant impact in the NHL. When I know that so very few young players do that. I’m probably expecting too much too soon from Tangradi.

by katielynn906 on Sep 7, 2010 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I think that signings of both Asham and Comrie are going to allow the Pens to not hurry Tangredi into the NHL before he is ready. The kid has 1, just 1 season, of professional hockey on his resume, and we all know it takes time for power forwards to find their game.

My prediction, is that Tanger 2(I am calling that nickname) will be a mid-season call up that will start with bottom 6 forward minutes and be afforded the opportunity to play top 6 forward minutes on occasion, especially if the Pens struggle to find a replacement for Billy G. as the screener on the PP.

agreed...

I don’t think we’ve seen nearly enough of Tangradi to label him

a bad bill of goods

Last year in WBS he really started to get into a groove later on in the season and it was his first pro season. It’s true, he didn’t do much in the AHL playoffs, but he was still a lot better than most of the other prospects.

You have to see it for yourself...

by Bla Razor on Sep 7, 2010 12:22 PM EDT up reply actions

If you think to highly of him he’ll never meet your expectations! Tangradi was just a side attraction in the Whitney/Kunitz trade. He’s not a bad bill of goods . He’s like a younger version of Kunitz/Malone only with questionable NHL potential… that’s all.

If I had to hazard a guess at a breakout season, I’d say a healthy for the entire season TK gets that done. He started off last year real strong, as did GOOOOOL-igoski, who I can also see in this discussion. Bottom line though, a healthy and productive TK means a huge spark in the middle to upper lines that really strengthens our team. I remember that last two years now, when TK is on, actually wondering if he can be the lightning spark that gets this team off and running game to game. I think he’d put up solid numbers if he’s healthy.

As for a disappointment, I think either Goligoski or Letang on the basis one of them needs to step into Gonchar’s skates, and really establish themselves as ‘the guy’ on defense and the offensive zone. I wouldn’t really pin anything on Tangradi or other really unproven’s yet, because they haven’t shown me enough to see what I can truly expect game in and game out.

totally agree. When healthy, TK is a burst of energy in our bottom six.

And I agree with you about Gogo/Tanger, considering that people’s expectations are high (like mine are for Tanger). However, I still think Tanger’s going to have a big year.

Breakout season: Goligoski! Defensemen take longer to develop, and I think last year’s growing pains will set the stage for a solid year for him.

Dissapointment: No one at all, the entire team performs like studs and wins the stanley cup. Okay, back in the real world it’s gotta be Talbot or Kennedy.

Does Staal qualify for a break-out season if he goes 30-40-70? If he doesn’t then I’ll go with Gogo putting up big offensive numbers and holding it together defensively playing 5-on-5 he could be in for a very good season.

Disappointment… I’ll go with Cooke… I don’t think he’ll reach the point totals from last year and given the increased salary he’ll get the next 3 years I think it qualifies as a bit of a let-down

You have to see it for yourself...

by Bla Razor on Sep 7, 2010 12:29 PM EDT reply actions

by PensFan8725 on Sep 7, 2010 12:30 PM EDT up reply actions

Would it really be a breakout season for him though? If you recall, his rookie season he scored 29 goals. I guess it would because that year he only had like 12 assists.

A 70 point season from someone who has never hit 50 before is absolutely a break out season.

by Skyff on Sep 7, 2010 12:37 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, but his point total would increase about 40% over his career high. I think that’s a breakout.

Cooke Staal Malkin

If this is the line that Bylsma keeps saying is going to be #2 then I can only see Cookes stats rising!

I’m not a big fan of Tyler “The Cycle Killer” Kennedy (aka Tyler “Goalie’s Chest” Kennedy), so I’ll go with him for disappointing season.

On the other hand, if Letang can keep up his play from the last post-season, I think it’ll be a great year for him.

I think TK gets 15 goals if he is lucky, and Letang gets 12 goals, 34 assists, 46 points.

by Link_Gaetz on Sep 7, 2010 12:55 PM EDT reply actions

12 goals would be pretty huge for Letang. I remember one of my bold predictions for last year was he’d crack double digits and we all know how that turned out.

by Hooks Orpik on Sep 7, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah, I think it would be huge, but it’s possible.

I think Tanger and Gogo are going to see a ton of PP time this year, and I also think the PP will be better. That’s why I’m feeling the point increase for Tanger.

My reasoning for the PP being better, is because I think Malkin will be better.

by Link_Gaetz on Sep 7, 2010 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

I think it’ll be better than past non-Gonchar lineups (hard to be worse) but it’d be really impressive if it’s all-around better. Guess we’ll find out.

by Hooks Orpik on Sep 7, 2010 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Right, but I don’t think Tanger will have the same miserable shot percentage (1.7 % on 174 shots) this year. An increase to 6 % assuming he has the same number of total shots will give him 10 goals. And I think he may even have more shots this year given the chance to play more PP minutes.
Just my 2c.

Disappointment = either TK or Talbot. Especially if both stay < 25 pts

He`s a more offensively gifted Rupp, only smaller but still willing to drop the gloves with anyone.

Breaking out, I’m putting money on Paul Martin or Michalek. The former should put up better offensive numbers now that he’s outside of the Devils defensive system. See also Michalek.

Disappointing…eh. I’m not sure if Tangradi is ready for the big stage yet. I think he will be eventually, but maybe not this season. TK had also better get his act together and play like he did in 08-09 if he wants to stick around.

by SlayerGhaleon on Sep 7, 2010 1:21 PM EDT reply actions

In context

He is offensively gifted for a 4th line winger. I think anybody would be pretty happy to see a player like him put up ~25 points, which he’s very capable of doing.

Breakout – Tangradi
Disappointment – Michalek

I am saying tangradi because I believe in this kid. Yeah, I got ya, we really havn’t seen him play. Fact is, if you’re going to make it, you’re going to have a breakout year sooner or later. I think his last game with the big club left a Danny B wanting more. I think he’ll get his shot and I think he’ll use that frame of his to stick around. Anybody watch him in Juniors? Dang kid is feisty and he can make it.

Disappointment – I went with Michalek. I just think that as the season goes on, everybody is going to realize that maybe, just maybe the Pens overpaid for him a big. I hope not and I know he’s not going to bring points, just a load of defense so we will see. I’ll be the first to admit when I’m wrong on both accounts.

by Wags24 on Sep 7, 2010 1:55 PM EDT reply actions

Interesting. Michalek’s joining a whole new team with a really different system and I could see him maybe taking 50 games to get in rhythm. Plus expectations for him are very high, so it wouldn’t be too tough for him to disappoint.

And his sort of game is often underappreciated. You don’t notice him unless he makes a mistake, and you don’t miss him until he is gone.

by Skyff on Sep 8, 2010 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

switching conferences is going to be a big transition for him as well. He has already referenced that in an interview. he doesnt know to many players in the EC. I think he could have a slow start to the season. I dont think this is going to be a contract the Pens regret tho…not this year anyway

by genomachine-O on Sep 9, 2010 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions

Break out: Michalek. Everyone knows how well he can play defense and block shots, but he has a very underrated slap shot that I think we may very well see utilized.

Disappointment: Fleury. Hate to say it, but he’s still going to give up softies throughout the season. He’ll get the wins but the stats won’t be good, not that they normally ever are. But people expecting him to morph into a Top 5 goalie in the league because we brought in significant defensive help will feel disappointed after this season.

There are two theories on hitting a knuckleball - unfortunately, neither of them work.

by BobPurkey34 on Sep 7, 2010 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

Fleury...

You know, I hate to say it, but it’s tough for Fleury to have a disappointing season. Everybody in the hockey world from the Pens organization on out knows that Fleury is in for some soft goals. It’s kind of his M.O., sadly enough. He’s been doing it ever since he’s been playing hockey it seems. Remember Canada VS the US in the World Juniors? I would not trade Fleury, I wouldn’t, he can win you games…well all know he can lose them too. Fact is, great goalies are hard to find, we should be happy we have a upper-good-area type of goalie. Not great, but certainly not bad. Only way I would be disappointed in Fleury is if he starting losing and constantly letting up softies. Outside of that, I don’t know how you can be disappointed in him because soft goals are expected.

FYI, I know you didn’t say you would trade him, I was just adding that in there for color.

by Wags24 on Sep 7, 2010 5:22 PM EDT up reply actions

Well not just “soft” goals like weak shots getting in, but Fleury seems to have more bad goals, like bad luck.

That infamous US goal was the result of MAF trying to play the puck and it hit his own guy….Then you think of all the goals where they come off the boards (Detroit) and end up somehow getting behind him. And I swear once a year he stops the puck, falls down on his ass and somehow the puck drops with him and he ends up bumping it in himself.

It’d be one thing if he was giving up dribblers, but for some reason it seems some really wacky “once in a million” type goals always go against him.

Well I honestly think Letang will have a remarkable year. Last year he seemed to be missing the net a lot and still looked shaky…until the playoffs. During the playoffs he scored 5 goals in 13 games. For a D-man who scored only 3 times in 73 games, thats remarkable. Not to mention he will be the lead D man on the Power player with GoGo. Quick hint, Letang is a fantasy sleeper, he’s ranked so low you can get him at a bargain.

My Disappointment: In all honesty my expectations for Tangradi is so high this year, I can only be disappointed. He might not even make the team! It will be interesting to see how these two will do this year.

Is there any chance the Letang bashing will ever end?

We fans have short memories.

Letang shot at 8.8% in 07-08 and 7.2% in 08-09 (not to mention 7.4% and 21.7% the last two playoffs).

Last year, even with his “accuracy” problems, he still got 174 shots on goal. If he can match that in 10-11, and his S% comes back anywhere close to his earlier performances, we’ll get 14 goals from him. Throw in the 25-30 assists that he will get and his 40-45 point season will help us forget about the departure of Gonchar.

Letang and Gogo

I think Letang will have a break out year but Gogo will be a bust. Gogo, TK and Max could all be headed for the woodshed…

But, I am hoping that no one has a crappy year but that is just wishful thinking.

Breakout – Letang
Disappointment – Kennedy, but I really hope I’m wrong and he has a great year.

by SuMac on Sep 7, 2010 4:05 PM EDT reply actions

Breakout – Staal, playing with legitimate top 6 forward talent, i.e Malkin, will create opportunities that Cooke and TK never could. My only fear is he will get off to a slow start coming off the foot injury.

For what it is worth I am in season 3 of my NHL 2009 (PS2, I know I am old school) and this is the year that Staal became unstoppable, so he has that going for him

Disappointment – I think TK’s days are numbered. He is what he is and the problem is that he does what others can do, only those others are bigger, slightly younger, and have more potential. When Tangredi is ready TK is going to be watching a lot of games from the press box, at least said press box will be state of the art.

Life is about one simple choice, get busy living or get busy dying

If Geno and Staal are paired together...

Then Geno could have a breakout year. Yes, I know, Geno is a superstar and has Calder and Ross and Smythe trophies already, but hear me out. With Staal as a setup man — and shouldering some of the defensive load and taking the faceoffs — I think Geno has a good chance at 50+ goals. He’s already scored 47 in a season, and he’s come along as a playmaker since then. Add in a chip on his shoulder after the Olympics and playoff exit, and a bit of health, and Geno could shatter his prior ceiling.

Disappointment: Goligoski and TK come to mind, but Comrie is a more likely candidate. For whatever reason, not everyone clicks with Sid. If he doesn’t, he’ll only see bottom six minutes. He might outperform that low contract, but if he isn’t the (Obi-wan voice) “Crosby linemate we’re looking for” then we’ll all feel disappointed.

by RuthenianCowboy on Sep 7, 2010 4:55 PM EDT reply actions

Even if Comrie ends up being put on the 4th line, he’ll never be a disappointment in my book because of his price tag (500k). Think of it this way: he’s cheaper than Godard, Rupp, and Asham and he’ll probably score more goals (even if he doesn’t, it’s ok because of the price tag) than all of them combined.

So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.

by PensFan8725 on Sep 7, 2010 7:16 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s a good way to look at it, but I think a lot of people are thinking/hoping/praying Comrie might be able to stick on Sid’s line and become that mythical winger that can score more than he deserves.

You know, Rob Brown for the 21st century.

by Hooks Orpik on Sep 8, 2010 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions

He very well could stick on his line. I hope he does, but considering the price tag and that he took less to be here (which, obviously means he wants to be here) as long as he’s making an impact somewhere, I’m fine with it.
It’s funny because Sid takes a lot of flak for “not being able to turn a winger into a great player” when, in reality, the best guy he’s ever played with is Hossa for 3 months. If they keep giving Sid Colby Armstrong’s, they’ll only get (at the most) a 60 pt player.

So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.

by PopRocks on Sep 7, 2010 11:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Yes we have Orpik, he may be a van driving candy giving Red Wing destroyer but he won’t let Comrie have any “affairs with teammates wives”. Orpik is a realist and you need that in the locker room to keep it strong. After the Sutton-Leopold hit he was the one to stand up and say that was a clean hit lets move on! That is why he will be wearing the A this season. Orpik or DIE

by Geno McFleury on Sep 8, 2010 1:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Disappointment: Crosby – Only because too many people will be expecting 50 goals again. I think Sid will be more of a play-maker this year than a goal scorer. Opponents will defend him like a goal scorer, and this should open up things for his linemates.

Breakout: Kunitz. See above.

(This will make me real popular, but you people took all the good answers.)

by Live Chickens on Sep 8, 2010 6:58 AM EDT reply actions

Crosby is never a disappointment, never will be a disappointment—even if lots of people think he will score 50plus goals again and he doesn’t.

I for one am hopin he does have a big goal scoring season.

But putting the words “disappointing” and “Crosby” in the same sentence is just wrong.

by Leafer87 on Sep 8, 2010 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

If he still scores a 100 points or, with injury, was on pace to score 100 points, he’s not a disappointment. If anything not scoring 50, but still having 100 will remind everyone what a versatile player Sid is.
He so consistent that you can basically count on Sid scoring that many…it’s like a constant.

(This will make me real popular, but you people took all the good answers.)

If you really didn’t think Sid will the “disappointment,” and just wrote it down because we already took all the good answers, then I’d still like to know who your real disappointment is.

Would 35-65 be a disappointment?

My blog and Twitter, featuring coverage of the winger that has now terrorized over 70 NHL goalies.

by red army line on Sep 9, 2010 11:10 AM EDT up reply actions

Not to me personally, but I think it would be to a large number of folks. I think people expect Sid to always be in the running for the Hart and Ross, and 100 points isn’t going to get him close to either one. Plus, as Chickens mentioned above, the drop from 51 to 35 goals would be widely viewed as a disappointment, I think.

If the team as a whole makes up for the goals he didn’t score, then no. If the team struggles again this year to score goals, I can guarantee you Sid will have that extra drive to put the puck in the net. If you haven’t figured it out already, Sidney Crosby usually gets what he wants.

So when's October you ask? Well, here's your answer.

by PensFan8725 on Sep 9, 2010 6:08 PM EDT up reply actions

To clarify, I don’t think Crosby will disappoint. But I don’t think he will score 50, and people will come out of the woodwork to say he had an “off-year.”

He could score 40 and actually have a better year, but people will (incorrectly) focus on goal scoring rather than his all-around game.

by Live Chickens on Sep 8, 2010 9:14 AM EDT reply actions

Thanks for claryifing

I do agree that they come out of the woodwork, say stupid things and don’t focus on his over-all game—just his # of goals scored.

I am really looking forward to watching how improved his all-around game is, because you know he worked his butt off all summer.

Between Tanger & GoGo, I expect one of them to step up and take the goose on the PP unit… GoGo probably has more to improve on.

Between TK & Max, they need to put up some big games this year or we are losing them.

I won’t go so far as to call it a curse, but it certainly didn’t do us much good in 93, and Eastern Conference teams in general that win the PT don’t have much luck winning the Cup, with the lone exception being the 94 Rangers.

STAAL FOR SELKE.

by katielynn906 on Sep 8, 2010 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Unfortunately, all is not rainbows and unicorns. There's also the bad way the season might turn out.

After carrying the team last season and being scared that we might not have strong wingers, he turns to a more defensively minded game. He only wins the Selke.

Staal- succumbs to infection missing half the season. His iron-man status becomes a folk tale. Out of running for Selke. He also gets teased when Gogo’s poor production causes a trade for brother Marc.(Yes, even Shero’s year could be bad)

Malkin’s parents never show, and he leaves halfway through the season because he’s homesick and doesn’t have Gonchar or the Ukraine-duo to pal around with.

Kunitz goes all-out against the Flyers in the opener and ends up with a concussion, out until March.

Dupuis’ eyebrows overgrow his eyes and he can’t put a shot on net, actually scores a few own goals.

TK- sorry, traded to Florida.

Talbot- doesn’t make the team out of camp, no longer asked to do commercials, spends even more time on the South Side, but even sucks at karaoke so bad that he can’t get a date. Typically, he’s found by the bartender huddled in a corner in the fetal position at closing time mumbling, "but I’m a superstar."

Rupp- can’t quite take on a new-Gary Roberts-like role, quits the Pens to join the Monster Truck tour.

Cooke- actually bites another player’s finger off and is suspended for quite some time.
Asham- is that other player, doesn’t have such great stick-handling abilities without a thumb.

Adams- doesn’t even get an assist.

Godard- doesn’t get in any fights, actually gets penalized for throwing the gloves down at the ref since no one else will take him on.

Michalek takes a blocked shot which destroys his ankle.

Letang still can’t hit the net.

Orpik looks in the mirror scares himself with his stare.

Martin was trade bait all along. Timmonen causes so much drama in Philly that he is on the other end of the trade. Unfortunately, he never finds his stride and his salary plagues the team a few more years.

Fleury and Johnson can’t quite cut it. Boston is eager to dump Tim Thomas on us in exchange for the duo. But, he’s old.

Finally, Comrie gets divorced from his wife when she notices a young, twenty-something kid with spiked hair in the stands wearing an Olympic t-shirt at the Predators game.(I bet you can’t guess who that might be.)

Could go either way. Here’s hoping it’s the former, but in case it’s the latter, I’ve already got my tickets for Nashville. GO PENS!

Breakout- I’d say Martin, not sure if its really a breakout season, but previous career high is 37pts. I think he should easily be able to top that if he sees some PP time. Kunitz would be my number 2 choice. I think hes a very good player when healthy, problem is he cant stay healthy.

Dissapointment- I’d say TK because I want to think positive thoughts about Fleury.
