SBN Expansion Exercise Update

Last week we opened the floor to debate on who the Penguins should protect from the fictional expansion draft they're putting on over at SBN NHL.  I ended up submitting our list with what most seemed to agree upon: Max Talbot, Tyler Kennedy, Pascal Dupuis and Arron Asham would be the bubble players that we protected.

It seems our fearless leader, Travis Hughes (formely of Broad Street Bullies) "accidentally" put prize prospect Eric Tangradi, and defenseman Ben Lovejoy on the unprotected list. Both of those players have played under 49 NHL games, making them ineligible to be claimed.  Some mistake, huh?  Travis claims it was just that, and we'll give him a pass since neither player was picked up.  Surely we would have bumped Tangradi over a middle-aged plugger like Asham, so I'm glad that nothing came out of the accident.

In fact, no Penguins were selected at all to the new teams in Winnipeg and Quebec.  Check it out here to see who they grabbed up- some surprisingly decent names out there that teams were looking to dump, given their salaries.

Next up they're going to sim a game between the two expansion teams.  Who do you like better?  No offense to friend of the blog James Mirtle (who served as Winnipeg's GM) but I have to give the nod to the Quebec squad.   Turns out I missed reading comprehension day, as Mirtle actually drafted the Quebec team, which I think is the stronger of the two.  Whoops!

Bugsy

why was Malone left unprotected?
not sure why TB has him relegated to checking line duties…have his skills diminished?
(i don’t see many tampa games)

I think his skills are fine and he’s playing well. At the same time, $4.5 million against the cap for him for the next four years is something I’m sure Yzerman would get out of in a heartbeat if he could.

In the second half of the season, Stewe Downie basically took Ryan Malone’s role on the team. And Malone was pushed to third line duties which completely crushed his value on the score sheet. Downie’s point production went way up. Downie’s cap hit is about $1.8 million and Malone’s is about $4.5 million. Since Downie clearly demonstrated he’s capable of doing exactly what Malone was doing… For $4.5 million, Malone is expendable were an expansion draft to happen tomorrow. I’m sure that’s why the folks in Tampa threw him under the bus.

Oh, whoops. I totally whiffed on that, swear I have visual dyslexia at times.

Let me take that back and congratulate you!

I would defiantly have to give the nod to Quebec. They are just an all around better team.

After looking at the draft for a second time I realized why I like the Quebec team so much. It has 4 ex-penguins on it. Armstrong, Malone, Ference, and Christensen. It is still a really good team on paper at least.

looking through the picks I’m quite surprised none of the “available” Penguins players got drafted…

You have to see it for yourself...

The available Pens were Rupp, Godard, Adams, and Johnson. I am not surprised at all there were a lot of better players available.

I must say I find both teams surprisingly solid. Granted, they wouldn’t be winning the cup in their first year and probably not even qualifying for the playoffs, but I can think of a handful of real teams that are worse off than those two.

My favorite pick up there is Ondrej Pavelec by Quebec. Has anyone here watched him play? Pavelec defines athleticism. He has size and technique. If he were in a bigger hockey market(AKA not Atlanta), the league would talk about him as a big goaltending prospect.

agreed

This Quebec team will have quite a packed crease:)
