Simon Despres in Juniors
I don't know if anyone else is watching the World Junior Championship, but I have been really impressed with Despres in the series. I was really impressed with him in training camp, but the World Juniors is really showcasing him in a different way. He's playing more of a shut down role as opposed to the high scoring, flashy offensive role he showed in camp, and plays on his junior team. The speed at the Juniors is off the charts (unlike camp) and I've been pleasantly surprised with his skating, especially when you consider his size. Any thoughts?

i agree. he looks great.
Molinari had an article on Xmas day listing him at the Penguins #1 prospect.
I fall into the category of people (i.e. non-Canadians) who can’t understand why people get so excited about the WJC. Until they make the NHL, they’re not important. But I’m happy Despres looks good, I have a good feeling about him.

As a hockey fan I love watching the World Juniors because it is kind of a showcase of some of the up-and-coming stars who I would otherwise know very little about. Seeing guys like Eberle and Hall play for Team Canada over the last couple of years was cool, and it was a bit of a preview of the sorts of things we might see from them as they develop in the NHL. This year, for Team Canada, anyway, it’s kind of fun because they have an almost entirely new roster — so they’re all sort of new to me (except Despres). And I like learning about the guys from other countries who are up-and-coming, too. Not to mention the opportunity to see how hockey is played when there’s more of a European influence.
I’d also liken it a little bit to watching college basketball: there’s some really good hockey going on, but it’s also a little rough around the edges. There’s often a delightful simplicity in the way they play (there has to be because most of the teams are only together for a short time [unlike this year’s Russians]), but there are also some interesting mistakes that get made, which add a bit to how the whole game experience goes. We get to see how the players (and coaches) respond in difficult situations, rise to the occasion, and stack up against some of the best of their peers.
I guess in general it’s a little more “fresh” than the grind of the NHL season.
I'm looking forward to reading Crosby's novel.
ditto
it’s basically a showcase of hockey’s future. Some of the guys are already drafted so it’s kinda like scouting the competition, and some of the guys are working like crazy to get to the NHL. You don’t have to be in the NHL to be important.

World Juniors is the greatest! Future NHL stars, great passionate hockey, and kids playing for the love of the sport and country!
It`s an amazing event (was lucky enough to go to a game when it was held in Winnipeg) and really captures the nations attention here in Canada. I suggest you give it a try! Some of the most exciting hockey in the world, bar none!

it also makes the NHL draft more interesting, because you’re already familiar with some of the players and you get to see where they end up

I was only able to watch the first Team Canada game (sometimes I hate the holidays!), but I thought he looked pretty good even in that one. It’s nice to know that he is continuing to impress.
I'm looking forward to reading Crosby's novel.
Simon Despres
I thought he acquitted himself rather well, not immediately obvious, but absolutely necessary for the win. I
I love the World Juniors (!) and definitely agree that Despres looks great. I can see him making the team next year even more now, though numbers may still dictate a pro stint in W/B. I can’t wait to see Despres in tomorrow’s game. I’m Canada, so clearly hoping for a Canadian win, but, either way, I want to see another great game from Despres.
I can’t believe it’s a Canada-US semi-final! Ah well. At least that means I stand a chance of seeing the game on television (if I get back to the Pitt in time, that is). Go, Canada, Go!!!
I'm looking forward to reading Crosby's novel.

PS
Lets not forget that we have eligible players like Seguin, Hall, Eberle, etc not there too! 2005 was an example of what would happen if ALL of our best players could go (NHL lockout, of course)… and definitely the greatest WJHC team of all time.
Crosby, Getzlaf, Bergeron, Perry, Carter, Richards, Ladd, Weber, Seabrook, Phaneuf, Barker, Coburn, etc. etc.
Heck, we CUT Mike Green, Eric Fehr, Dave Bolland and Kyle Quincey, lol!
At least you guys don`t have Carlson this year!! Put a dagger in our collective hearts last go around….

A few thoughts from watching 2 WJC games:
Constantly rewound the TV to see Despres’ shifts, here are some things I saw:
He always has his head up looking for a lead pass (really good trait for a defensemen in our system, fits our game)
Saw him lose his stick – and he immediately roved for about 3 seconds, then went down on one knee. He wasn’t amazing physically without a stick but positionally his play was very good…this all happened in about 10 seconds.
I think he likes to play in front of the goalie, did not notice him roam around much.
Despres was out on Canadas 1st team PK (I think?) he was strong, and again looked like he could play a PK role in the NHL.
Saw that he was out for one of the shifts that got a GWG, gotta have luck to make it!
He has size, a little strength and I get the feeling if he works on it he can be sort of like a baby Letang – he plays the puck before body right now, but maybe with NHL coaching staff he can even it out a little more. Kid can really force guys off of the puck.
Canada seems to really put their top D men out A LOT, did not really notice him do anything on offense, except I saw him have a solid breakaway (yes a breakaway) where he sort of got tackled/fell, but it was a good move to the net. To the same token I did not see him do anything BAD on D either.
Overall, a very solid D man and he should break the AHL roster and hopefully NHL roster soon, even though I think we all agree Engelland is a GREAT player, just not sure how Despres v Engelland v Lovejoy for a roster spot would turn out after Despres has fully developed. I know Despres scores points, he has before, so hopefully he can work on that touch and show it.
If I had to post a brief description of Despres for Pens fans to understand I would say Despres is like half a Letang. He is raw and could break top 4 D men IMO. I think he can become better than GoGo and fill a role similar to that, except with PK prowess.
Get in the fast lane Grandma, the bingo game's ready to roll!
THANKS, PFTW!

agree.
tough to break into the top 4 w/ Orpik, Michalek, Martin, and Letang, but Despres has the talent for a Top 4 role.
not sure if its this year at the deadline or, more likely, next (last year of his K), but i think we could then see the much discussed trade of Goose for a winger.
I agree, I think you may see GoGo gone sometime next season. Depres looks great, but I don’t think he will be NHL ready at the start of next season. He will probably spend it in WBS where he can really learn the Pens system before playing with the big boys.
Le-Tang Clan: Ain't Nuthin To Puck With!
Well, if you guys didn’t already know he almost made the team LAST year (for this season), it came down to him Lovejoy and Engelland – was a really close race. I don’t think it is about him learning our system as much as learning the NHL game. There have been comparisons of Despres vs Letang (sorry no sources, feeling lazy) and it has been said that like Tanger, Despres may be able to just jump into an NHL role sooner than later, with less AHL time than the average.
Breaking the top 4 means his is better than Tanger, Free Candy, Pauly D or Big Z – which he is not..guess he could break the top 5 is better lol.
I like GoGo but he is turnover city at times, he may be the first man off the ship. Despres really is smart with the puck, and BIG. He has hands too, he can make some sick moves in shootouts again just like – you guessed it – LETANG!

its nice to see a portion of this thread that hasn’t been hijacked!
yes, i remember the talk about Despres at camp THIS year
next year, i don’t know — PFTW and RLM140 make the key points for both sides
i think its just exciting to have such a good prospect in the system and to see him playing well at the WJCs
USA vs. CAN not in the final?!
blah… who made such a crappy playoff bracket that they meet in the semis?
You have to see it for yourself...
Can-Us are in different groups
It’s just that Canada screwed it up by losing to the Swedes.
Hah.

That wasn’t to get revenge, that was a mistake.

And then after we send the US to Sweden, we’ll work on a little old school whuppin’ for Russia (I hope!).
I'm looking forward to reading Crosby's novel.
Absolutely!
Canada VS Russia….it just seems right!
I think that the Swedes will beat a deflated US squad…but with Campbell playing out of his mind, US definitely has a shot…

Triumph over tragedy
After what Ms. Rochelle went through leading up to her inspired performance, it most definitely was.
This is hockey we are talking about though, and in this country GOLD is the only acceptable medal.

Besides...
….we won more than our fair share of GOLD medals at the Olys! 14 of them to be exact, to set a new record!
Its just in our nature to be charitable and give someone else a chance to win sometimes….hence the United States victory at the WJHCs last year =P

I’ve been pleasantly surprised with his skating, especially when you consider his size.
This is what impressed me about Despres at the prospect camp at Southpointe. He’s not blazing fast, but he’s very smooth and when you combine that with his size, the potential for quality defender is evident. The icing on the cake is that he has some skill as well. He likely won’t be a big point producer or top PP guy, but he has the ability to move and rush the puck to play in all situations.
The best course for his development would be significant time in the AHL to gain experience — remember, D-men often need more time to learn the pro game — and also mature physically. With his frame he can likely get much stronger, which would go a long way towards making him one hell of defensive specimen [insert creepy Pierre McGuire “long/active stick” reference here].
Haha Steigy gets really excited about long sticks too. He and Errey were going on and on about Enstrom’s stick a couple Thrashers games ago, and then a little bit in the last one too. Sometimes I wish they’d listen to what they say, but then they wouldn’t be half as entertaining! XD

Question
what do we think is the timetable of Despres. Could he see NHL action for the first 10 games of next season or will it be another year before he gets a chance at the NHL?
I think he starts the season in WBS, even if he has a great camp (they Pens are really deep at defense, they don’t necessarily need him right away). That should really help his development.
If it’s obvious that he belongs in the NHL, then I think the Pens will bring him up early on in the season. If not, the Pens wait half a season or even the full season to see where he’s at in WBS and go from there.

hm
any chance that they move a defenseman at somepoint next year (or i guess this year for that matter) as there seems to be a nice little jam up of defenseman. It seems like GoGo is the odd man out but with so many good young puck moving defenseman do we think maybe even Paul Martin could be traded as a more solid veteran?
I don’t know who would be traded, but it won’t be Paul Martin unless something darastic happens (like he asks for a trade or something).
I think there might be a trade and, if there is one, I would guess it would be Ben Lovejoy.

I’m really excited about this kid and I think he has a ton of potential, but there is really no spot for him in the NHL right now with all of the current NHL d-men locked up for several years. I think they did this on purpose so Despres can develop at his own pace in WB/S and be eased into the NHL instead of being rushed. I think he may see some NHL action sometime next year, but I don’t expect him to be an NHL regular for a few years.
