Power 100 2011- Sidney Crosby
Sid Ranks 31st in the top 100 U.S. athletes, number 1 in hockey, obviously. Ovie is 76th which I seem to think is low, since guys like Michael Turner rank higher.

nice!
I’ve only seen one Bell commercial with him in it :(
The universe moves depending on where Sidney Crosby is on the ice - IHeartPenguins
Certified Grabbo lover. GET WELL SOON, SID
This list is trash
Arian Foster is #22. No other explanation needed.

Are you kidding? You went that far?
I stopped at Shaq getting the #6 spot.

Well I CAN see that. Everybody knows who Shaq is and he’s in a ton of commercials. After all this is a Business Weekly article.
But Arian Foster? Seriously? They guy has one accomplishment to his resume. 90% of sports fans in the US don’t even know who he IS. And just winning the rushing title makes him the 22nd most powerful athlete in the country? Let’s ask this, if Sidney Crosby and Arian Foster walk into a room. Every single person is going over to Sid, and if Foster even opened his mouth, everybody would be like “Who the hell are you?”

Is that room full of Canadians or Americans? =P

If it’s full of a bunch of South Americans, I bet they recognize neither of them.
Both guys would probably be thrown out on their butts by security. Luckily, Sid’s is pretty large, so his injured status shouldn’t be in further jeopardy.

Of course, but it is a US list for a reason.

So they’d recognize Arian Foster….

I know what he’s done and I consider myself an avid football fan. But I would not recognize Foster if he walked into a room.

And I’m not sure more than maybe a few people would recognize Sid if he walked into a room.

Probably not.
Foster at #22 is an over-ranking though. Unless they know that he’s going to be on the next cover of Madden or something, Crosby is the face of his sport, makes many many times more money this year, has endorsements and is beloved in his own country.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
Just my opinion.
I think we’re overestimating Sid here, if this was a room full of Americans, that is.

Found their grading scale..
The on-field attributes consist of an athlete’s ranking within his or her sport, relative to all other participants, and a multiplier that is based on the popularity and viewing audience of that sport. Each athlete is compared to the average in a number of statistical categories for the specific sport on a two-year basis (weighted 80 percent for the most recent season and 20 percent for the season that preceded it).
So no doubt Foster benefits from playing in the country’s biggest sport.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
Now, you want to make an argument that if Foster and Jeter walked into a room…

Foster was the #1 running back in the NFL this season
and the NFL is the biggest sport in the US and this was a US poll so….
Not saying the list ISN"T trash, but it doesn’t surprise me that Foster was ranked.
Brandon Lloyd led the league in receiving yards too, does that mean he’s one of the most powerful people in sports too?
Fact is, unless you’re a die-hard NFL fan who plays fantasy, follows every team and knows every player in the league, you haven’t even heard of Arian Foster. I’m not saying he’s not a good running back or anything like that, and he may well have a bright future ahead of him. But no offense, the guy has done nothing in his entire football career besides have one great season.
It’s just lunacy to say that a guy who an awful lot of sports fans out there have never heard of, is more powerful than Jeter, Pacquiao, or Crosby.

Yeah, that would be exaggerating it.
Look, with every “power” list (especially the large ones) there’s bound to be one mistake. Judging Arian Foster based on his potential, rather than what his actual “power” is currently was this list’s mistake.
No reason to get wound up about it.

I don’t think it’s an exaggeration. I know you’re a Texan and everything so of course every football fan would have heard about him, but in the rest of the country…not so much.

I can guarantee that just about no one knows exactly every player in the league and that it’d be very difficult to follow every team.
Yes, I’m from Texas, but I watched exactly zero of the Texan’s games and even I know who Arian Foster is. The rushing title is a big deal to begin with and a feel good story like Foster’s only adds to curiosity and appeal.

I wouldn’t recognize Arian Foster if he came into the room wearing a Texans jersey.
Have I heard the name? Sure he killed me in fantasy. Knowing who someone is, and actually knowing them is different.
Then again, I recognize I’m in the minority.

I was talking about knowing who he is, not whether or not I would recognize him…

Running Backs > Recievers
and like I said, it’s the NFL, where almost 25% of males from 20-50 play fantasy football in the US(i am not part of that 25%).
As for the guy doing nothing his entire football career? He’s only played 1 full season, and in that season he was the best running back.
As for him being more powerful than Jeter, Pacquiao or Crosby… Jeter surprises me… but Pacquiao is a boxer and Crosby plays hockey. In the US, those are niche sports. More people in the US play fantasy football than watch boxing and hockey combined(probably… I’m just guessing).
As for your earlier comment about Sid and Foster walking into a room. That would be true in all of Canada & Pittsburgh… anywhere else, they would probably both get basically ignored as Foster hasn’t been around long enough to become a face, right now he’s only a name.. But if you mentioned the names to a room of sports fans, people would know more about Foster than Crosby. It’s just how America is… When it comes to sports, it’s Football, Baseball then basketball… then everything else. Unfortunately hockey is still part of the everything else.
I’m not saying the list isn’t wrong, I just think you’re undervaluing the influence of football in america.
I agree with the fact that RB > WR.
But you would also agree that quarterbacks are the most glamorous position in football. Philip Rivers led the league in passing yards, he’s been to the Pro Bowl multiple times and he’s one of the highest paid players in the NFL. Why is he only #37?
And yes, Foster has done nothing in his football career outside 2010. He was the starter his freshman year at UT only because the primary guy got hurt, then he lost the job the next year and got arrested for underage drinking. 2007 was decent then he lost his job again his senior year. Didn’t get drafted, spent the majority of his rookie NFL season on the practice squad and now 2010. I think it’s a fluke but I’ll be much more a believer if he does it again next year.
I have no idea how he’s above any of those guys. Jeter is the face for the most recognizable franchise in American sports. And people can be as ignorant about Sid or Pacquiao as they like but if you’re any sort of sports fan, whether you watch boxing or hockey, will know who they are. I know for me, I never watch boxing but if I’m in a room with Foster and Pacquiao, I know which one I’m going over to.
When it comes to sports, it’s Football, Baseball then basketball… then everything else.
That’s ESPN for you. But even still if mainstream America watches SportsCenter, they know who Crosby and Ovechkin are, whether they actually watch hockey or not. I still think if Sid was in any US city with a hockey team, they’d instantly recognize him. I can’t say remotely the same about Foster.

Yes, QB > All. Probably because he plays in SD… and he’s a pompous ass that a lot of people don’t like. ;)
I don’t disagree with you that he’s ranked too high. But it doesn’t surprise me… This was a new poll, the NFL is just ending and Foster had the best season as a running back, so his stock is high. If they took this poll 4 weeks into next season and Foster hadn’t shown anything, he probably wouldn’t even make the list.
He is a pompous ass. But I’m not sure which is better, people knowing you’re an ass or people having no idea who you are? I’d say I’m a pretty avid football fan and I’m an admirer of what he accomplished but I don’t think I’ve ever seen him do an interview, whatever, and definitely not any commercials.
You’re right on about the fact he’s on a major high right now.

The whole debate about this list makes me sad that we are four days away from the next Pens game.

October 7th felt like Christmas morning. So much so that I wasn’t all that upset that the Pens lost to the Flyers.
