5-0 in the preseason? Sure, why the hell not?
In Steve Sullivan's first game wearing a Penguins uniform, he lit the lamp for the first Pittsburgh goal and added an assist on Evgeni Malkin's game-clinching, empty-net goal. You have to feel pretty excited about Sullivan and what he's going to bring to this team. I see a Bill Guerin-esque leader ready to carry to veteran torch on this team.
Clap it up for Matt Cooke as well, who scored a shorty in the early stages of the second period to put the Pens up 2-0. Even Joe Vitale got into the mix a bit, notching the third goal of the game on assists from Kris Letang and Mark Letestu. Speaking of Letang, he finished the game with two helpers and also logged a team-high 23:41 of ice time.
Brent Johnson was on point between the pipes, setting aside 35 of 37 shots faced.
And hey, the power play went 2-for-3 on the night, but I'm not looking to jinx it or anything.
Final preseason game is Sunday against the Red Wings at 5:00. The regular season kicks off on Thursday, Oct. 6 as the Pens open it up with a west coast swing. Always a miserable stage of the Penguins' season, so they might as well get it out of the way early, huh?
