Video: Arron Asham Destroys Jay Beagle
When the Pens waved good-bye to Mike Rupp during the offseason and re-upped Arron Asham, this is why they did it:

As much as people on Twitter have torn this to pieces, it’s just hockey to me. Beagle set himself up for some attention by roughing up Letang. Come the drop of the gloves he actually started the fight pretty good. Two punches later the guy was quite literally knocked out, with blood coming from his mouth. Asham knew he connected with a winner, did something to get the crowd into it, went to the box. That’s where people are flipping out, the taunt. I just don’t see a difference what that makes beyond the old insult to injury line. Probably not needed, but sometimes you celebrate hitting a home run. Sometimes you don’t even win a fight and try to “Shhhh” the crowd.
Thing to really pay attention to here is that stick tap from Asham in the box. Nobody wants to see a player get seriously injured. Nobody. I think that gesture says enough from him. Anyone who decides to drop the gloves runs that type of risk, no matter how good or bad they are at fighting. When it’s over everyone on the benches tap their sticks and the fans cheer or boo. That’s just what hockey is from time to time.
I hope Jay Beagle is alright. Hopefully he won’t be gone too long for the Caps.

I credit Beagle for answering the bell when he knew he did wrong on Letang. But for a guy’s first NHL fight, I doubt he expected it to go that way.
I’m sure if Asham knew the severity of the injury he wouldn’t have made the “sleep” gesture, but like you said – he’s trying to fire up the crowd. If anything, his public apology afterward should be the end point. Over and done with. Beagle learns from his mistake, Asham learns from his.

It wasn’t needed in the sport of hockey, but it goes back to whether or not fighting is needed. It’s a barbaric practice and a lot of adrenaline and testosterone pumping. I think Asham’s a pretty standup guy, it was a stupid move to pull and he even admitted as much. He just was caught in the moment of a big fight and let his emotions get the better of him.

That is exactly it. I can’t fault a guy for that. He just bested his opponent in the most primal and barbaric fashion. The effects of that fight are literally pumping through his veins. And, it doesn’t just shut off the second after he lands that punch. It takes a little while to come down from that and he seemed remorseful once he stepped away.
Put on your dancin' shoes.
Right. And as Lavy mentioned, once Asham was in the penalty box and settled (and fully realized that Beagle was injured) Asham completely straightened out and was apologetic.

And then there was Asham doing everything he could to keep Beagle’s head from banging onto the ice after he collapsed. Good stuff.
Outscoring > outshooting.

Heh. At Japers a sizeable portion of the commentariat (including me) would much rather have seen things reversed last night.
Patron saint of quality footwear.
To an extent, how you get there matters, so I can see that. But it’s the point column, not shot column that they keep track of in the standings.

Sheesh, nice punch
never like to see anyone get hurt, and hopefully Beagle will be okay.. I could have done w/out the after fight celebration or whatever, but either way. Nice punch.
There's an 87% chance this post is sarcasm...
Asham should have just taken his gloves off, laid them on the ice, and pretended they were on fire. Everyone knows that’s just “having fun,” and isn’t really considered taunting.

Because someone was injured by AO’s 50th goal? I’m not all that offended by what Asham did, but this is a pretty weak analogy.

It’s celebration and showing up an opponent.
Is Asham’s more serious because there was a fallen (and injured player)? Sure- if you want to assume that on the spot AA knew that Beagle was totally f’ed.
Otherwise, it’s a fine analogy to me, it’s showing up an opponent. Ovechkin did it with his hot stick in the joy of scoring, Asham did it in the heat of the moment. AO’s was actually premeditated, being as Backstrom/Green were in on the plan, but backed out when it happened, so that may even make the pure action worse.
I think it’s mostly overblown, and personally don’t have an issue with either gesture (even though it’s not my cup of coffee).
"You come at the King, you best not miss."
One’s a goal scorer celebrating because he scored a goal, the other’s a fourth line grinder celebrating because he won a fight. It’s clear Asham didn’t know that Beagle was injured at that point.

I literally lol’d at this!
Look at Lemieux! Oh my goodness! What a goal! What a move! Lemieux, Whooa Baby!

What's that Justin Timberlake song? Cry me a river?
If anyone actually complains about this then they should just go watch tennis. If I make a play that benefits my team then why not celebrate especially in the circumstances that led up to the fight.
Not like Beagle was seriously injured. He was punched in the jaw and his head never hit the ice in a significant way.
What about Evander Kane he did a simple hand pump after KOing Cooke!! Like OMG did he just get satisfaction in winning a fight—something that has been in this sport longer than any other us have been living?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?
Not sure how you can promote such violence. Pretty sure NHL.com had the Geno fight plastered everywhere but then condemn such a NATURAL REACTION in a BIG GAME.

Beagle was hit hard enough to be laid out flat. He removed one of his own teeth that got knocked loose and was visibly shaken and bloodied. Not sure what your definition of “significant” is, but that certainly fits the bill for me.

Agree with you Hooks. This is one more reason why fights should be taken out of hockey. Now the media in DC is talking about the ways to retaliate. It had no effect in the game. A player had an injury. Beagle wanted to fight. If a fight happens with a ban in place the player would be ejected and an would be suspended for a game with one more game added.

An eye for an eye…
(But I doubt the Caps will respond in kind- they don’t have a reason to goon it up ala NYI and Asham/Beagle fight was a clean one. Worst comes to worst, both teams might dress their token goon next game and we get a staged fight.)
"You come at the King, you best not miss."
Yeah. My guess is DJ King takes a break from eating nachos to take a fourth-line spot for the next time the teams meet. It’s silly, but it is what it is.

Right. And Steve MacIntyre will be out there to meet him. They’ll dance and spend more time in the box than they get on the ice and hopefully we can get to hockey.

You think a missing tooth is a significant injury? And I was talking about his HEAD hitting the ice in a significant way no way did his tooth pop out because of his head hitting the ice it was from the punch. Should we remove sticks from the game because players lose teeth from high sticks.
I have 2 fake teeth thanks to high sticks and I never * about sticks…if you engage in a fight you know the risks.
Hockey has turned into an “eye for an eye” pansy ass game and that’s a fact. Just take out the instigator rule.

My point is that fighting should be a punishable offence, more than a penalty. There’ll be fights in hockey, when it’s worthwhile, and the guys to do it will be somebody that knows how to do it. Not a guy like Beagle who didn’t want to look bad, and got KOed by somebody who knows how to fight. I think you might be wrong about just stitches, he may have a concussion which can happen anytime you suffer trauma to your head. He was speared further damage by Asham holding him and resting him in the ice. Agree that the removal of the instigator rule may deter some of this idiots like Beagle taking runs at good players. Actually BB was arguing that call with the ref. Although it was clear Beagle initiated the fight.

I have no problem with the gesture
Regardless of what people say.
This is 1 of the reasons hockey is the toughest sport in the world. You do not want to run the risk of fighting and getting injured, then don’t drop the gloves and cower up like some players do. I have no problem with a player protecting himself and his future. Beagle elected to drop the gloves and square up and faced the consequences. Ashom did his little gesture before he really knew how bad it actually was (although he did know he was out like a baby).
Although, I do like it when a player knocks the other player out and just acts like its another day at the rink (like I like a Fball player who runs straight to the ref and hands the ball off to go give hugs to his lineman for their great blocks or the QB for his nice ball).
Ashom apologized and knew he screwed up after he saw he was a little more than knocked out. I think if he would’ve been knocked out and got back up quite quickly without assistance that the apology is not eve needed.
And for those that have been in fights before, even if it is just a really heated argument, your body goes into a stress (fight or flight) that it is not used too, emotions are amplified by a magnitude. Not just only during the fight for awhile after for your body to recover homeostasis. Ashom did the right thing as soon as saw the picture after sitting down for a second.
So I was at the game and didn’t actually see/know about “The Gesture” until I got home and caught the highlights. Honestly seemed like a non-issue to me.
That said, I was actually a little disappointed in the crowd. Beagle was laid flat out and at first didn’t really appear to be moving. And of course there was blood everywhere — not that we could necessarily see that from the stands. In my opinion, the usual “protocol” is to wait and see if a guy like that is okay, then clap for him as he makes his way off the ice, and then celebrate the awesome fight victory (assuming there was … you know … no stretcher involved). Instead, the crowd went nuts, and even more so as the jumbotron showed Asham in the box, and when Beagle was finally up and being helped off the ice a large portion of the crowed was booing him. Yes there’s something to be said for getting the crowd riled up. But this is not Philadelphia: we should be a little more respectful, imo.
Jagr? I don't even know 'er.
Especially considering Beagle’s a kid that clearly made the mistake of fighting out of his class.
At least they weren’t booing a “Hockey Fights Cancer” ad featuring David Steckel?

Hockey Fights
My impression is that hockey fights are two grown men on ice skates trying to hurt each other. Had Beagle not moved into that punch its just a jab to the head that he shakes off. I do know for certain that I would only be able to jab and try not to fall down and make a fool of myself in that situation.
Asham is the dirtiest player in the NHL. He always pulls this stuff, he should get suspended for at least 10 games and then given more for the showboating and the Penguins should lose the point they got as well.

I don't keep track of these things...
…but I’m certain Asham does not knock out every player he fights.

Mike Knuble's Take
“Arron was just doing his job,” Knuble said. “I’ve played with Arron, he’s an honest player, he’s tremendous at what he does and he’s doing what he had to do. Jay did what he felt what he had to do. It’s a little bit more experience against someone who doesn’t have a lot and that’s the result.”
BB's comments
per NHL.com:
Capitals coach Bruce Boudreau suggested it was the six-foot-one, 208-pound Beagle who made a mistake by getting into a fight with a tested and proven fighter like the 5-11, 205-pound Asham.
—>>they edited out BB’s exact quotation from their morning version, but BB clearly said that Beagle asked to go. Beagle jacked up one of the Pens’ most skilled players (Letang) then asked Asham to fight.
WTF did he expect?
Lemieux was a young buck fresh in the league and had his ass handed to him in his first fight, if I remember correctly. It happens to the best of them.
