Lucic hit
Milan Lucic hit on Miller was clearly illegal. interestingly a rather large number of media pundits are justifying Lucic's actions. Doing so they assign the responsibility to the Sabres. Basically it's "old school hockey", they should have answered the bell. While I agree that the Sabres can be accused of not standing up for their teammate, the league have been pounding on the players not to take justice in their own hands. Now my question to you fellow Pens fans is, substitute Lucic's name for Matt Cooke, what do you think the reaction would have been from those same pundits that justify Lucic's action. Particularly the Boston media, headed as usual by Mr. old school hockey himself Mike Milbury. All said I can't define Lucic any better than Ryan Miller did.

I’d expect Lucic to get the rule book thrown at him. We really can’t have players hitting goalies. I don’t care what some grey haired obsolete old geezers are saying about old school hockey. This is 2011, not the 70s. That was a hit. It was intentional. And it was on a goalie. Throw the rule book at him.
As for your question about what if it had been Cooke, there’d be a widespread lynching attitude going on. If it had been Cooke delivering the hit, he would have been out for several months. But I imagine Lucic, though no saint himself, will get less than Cookie would have.
Yes, like you I expected a suspension. But it doesn’t surprise me he gets nothing, because the old guard in Canada has been putting pressure on Shanny about hits in the league. Complete crapola, if I was Ruff next time they play Boston I put a guy to run over Tim Thomas, and see how they like it.

I’ve been going over to Die by the Blade to see what they’re saying. I said it was a chickenshit play, but out of all of it, I would be more upset that Miller’s teammates didn’t stand up for him so well. That’s why Buffalo is viewed as soft.
Cooke?
20 games is about on the money for what Cooke would get. Sounds about right. No matter what Cooke does or how he plays, he has the rep now and will never get rid of it. He is a poster boy for the “Tough” stance the NHL is taking.
The Bruins get out of an awful lot of suspensions. At least one game would have been right in this case.
No suspension to me means that this whole new tough attitude is nothing but a joke.
Someone will probably take a good run at Thomas next game. I bet the Sabre gets suspended though.

Technically, Lucic was let off because of a lack of intent. If a Sabre ran Thomas, there’d be a reason for intent, so…

How does anyone know intent. I never heard any player admitting intent. It would have been better if Shanny would have left it as a non punishable penalty. When he inserted the intent, is what makes me question his credibility. All that does as leave the door open to the next guy that does it to be punished.

Yeah, yeah, lack of intent....
There was nothing stopping him from altering his course. The puck was way ahead of him and Miller had the CLEAR case of owning the puck. Lucic ran him.
If a Sabre can come up with a good reason or situation to explain off their lack of intent, then the Sabre should be able to get off as free as Lucic did.
As a matter of fact, just about any player that can come up with a good excuse and a good situation, can run a goalie hard now. Net minders are gonna stay in their crease because of this one. Good job Shanny.
Of course, any other team doing this would not be a Bruin, so they might not be able to get off so light.
not a good decision...
maybe a biased opinion here, but I definitely expected (and hoped for) a suspension for Lucic. Nothing against tough play, but this was exactly the kind of uncalled for dangerous play they’ve been “trying” to take away from the game…
and before they try to hide behind some bullsh*t argument like “the head wasn’t targeted” the league officials better ask themselves – do we really want to tolerate taking out goalies like that???
You have to see it for yourself...
The league office is in Toronto and ran by Canadian citizens. These are just the facts. I don’t think they are intentionally biased but I do see some favoritism along national lines. (Miller is American and plays in Buffalo, so doesn’t have the media attention of a Canadian in a Canadian market). If this had happened to Price in Montreal, a la the Chara hit of last year, there would have been a huge public outcry for Lucic’s head on a platter. I believe that there would have been a different result out of the league office. For better or worse? Who knows.
way to go shanny
yet another joke of nhl discipline. simply unbelievable that there was no down time associated with that hit. “i was just skating with my head down and i look up and hes right there.”. really? come on. you can bet if it was cooke, or any other number of “instagators” that they would be out of the lineup for an extended period of time. nice to see nhl dicipline being done right this time….good job colin campbell er i mean Brendon Shannahan.

Crickets in Bastahn?
How much are we hearing from the Bahstahn Fans now that the shoes on the other foot?
I’m sure a few, like some of us Pens fans will criticize Lucic but where’s the outrage from the Bahstahn media?
Hypocrisy! Thy name is Bruin Fan! (But they’ll have to wrestle “Benden” the rules Shanahahahan for the title).
