Pens Recall Steve MacIntyre from Wilkes-Barre and then in separate move, send Eric Tangradi back down to WB/S

I guess it makes sense…With Sullivan and Kennedy OK, no room at the inn (for now) for Tangradi. And MacIntyre’s 14 days available for his conditioning assignment were almost up.

WIth the Pens having no real need for MacIntyre, and more forwards (Crosby!) on the way back…I wonder if they may consider something I did not think they’d do: waiving Big Mac. He’s an extra salary and a roster space that could be used, and there’s really no reason to waive one of Jeffrey, Park or Vitale, who can all be useful NHL players. (And none of whom would clear waivers, I’d imagine).

I dunno, there’s always a need for a guy with heavy hands on the roster, even if he’s usually a healthy scratch. There’s one reason MacIntyre was signed: Dave Semenko. It’s worth every dollar of that $600k to have a deterrent on the roster. It also doesn’t hurt that MacIntyre’s a top-5 deterrent.

I’d love to believe that Asham and Engelland are all the toughness the Pens need to keep Crosby from excessive cheapshots, but having that big guy looming in the press box itching to get into a later-season rematch could put the kibosh on plenty.

Maybe so, but is the NHL different in 2011 than it was in 1985? I’m thinking so, especially as most the other teams with “enforcer only” players are frequently being healthy scratches, if they’re not put out of the league altogether.

The bigger issue is than the cap, this year, is the roster space. On a 23 man roster, when the time comes to activate Crosby, the Pens can’t keep all of Mac + Jeffrey, Vitale and Park. Who’s the odd man out from those 4 players?

Would you waive a Richard Park to keep the deterrent? Or would you guess/bet that guys like Engelland and Asham can handle whatever rough stuff needs addressed.

And also, you can’t do much deterring from the press box. MacIntyre couldn’t get into many games when the forwards were decimated with injuries. Now that things are swinging towards more health, when’s he ever going to be in the top 12 that get a sweater?

Maybe so. But is a team going to claim MacIntyre? My instinct says he probably clears waivers and is a phone call away anyways, if he was needed.

right there with ya

In the salary cap NHL tough decisions have to be made and you can’t keep everybody. Between Park, DJ, Vitale, and BIg Mac only 3 can stay so 1 must go. Big Mac is going to be waived, it’s just science.

it’s more arithmetic than science, but i agree with both of you, it has to be Big Mac. I trust Engo and Asham to be the protectors, more so than anyone that’s a healthy scratch.

Agree with you Hooks, besides with the instigator rule in effect and the guy in the pressbox it wo’nt do us any good. Obviously somebody who doesn’t believe Asham’s or Engo’s toughness, didn’t watch recent Asham’s fights (ie last night). I myself believe is better to have a guy that can skate and fight, even if you give a slight advantage on the fighting, which I don’t think we do.. There isn’t anyone in our division that Asham or Engo would be at a disadvantage .

Sucks that Big Mac is the odd man out, but on the plus side is that he most likely will make it through waivers. If a team (e.g. the Islanders) is rude enough to claim our enforcer there will be consequences down the road. E.g. we claim a prospect from them next pre-season completely out of left field. Revenge is a dish best served frozen solid and all.

You guys are misreading this

It’s clearly a sign Crosby will be back soon duhhhhh

Big Mac did kill a couple of guys in the AHL during his stint but he’s useless in the NHL today with that oh so stupid instigator rule and Asham’s fighting on the rise.

What will happen is some goon takes a shot at Sid, Geno or Letang…Mac will go after him and the goon will back down and the Pens will go on the PK multiply this event by 100x

Hockey and Boxing

Looking down our roster I see Ash, Engel and Cookie who know how to fight….is it too much to ask for Smacker to be able to skate as well as fight? I know he’s the heavyweight and all that, but last I looked, “crazy eyes” could still deliver a crushing check as well as anyone so couldn’t THAT be our “deterrent” instead of taking a fighting penalty?

Engo’s role has changed and so has Cookies. Asham isn’t going to be that year round tough guy he’s just not capable of doing that. Big Mac is the best in the game at what he does but with the stupid new rules it really cuts down on how effective he can actually be.

I have no problem him getting 10+ game suspension for when he completely murders some idiot that tries to take a shot at ANY of our players because he will. He’s a team player and will absolutely eat any goon that tries anything. C’mon Avery, try something, you won’t and if you do we all know how fast you can run and turtle!!
