The Pittsburgh Penguins have recalled defenseman Alexandre Picard from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced today by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Picard, 26, has appeared in nine games for WBS, collecting three assists and posting a team-best plus-7 rating – which places him 10th (tied) in the AHL. Picard was scoreless in two exhibition games for Pittsburgh during the preseason.
Picard, who signed with Pittsburgh as an unrestricted free agent on July 5, spent the 2010-11 season with the Montreal Canadiens. In 43 games with the Canadiens, Picard amassed three goals, five assists and eight points.

I assume this is a precaution because of the trip out west. It is usually a good idea to have some reinforcements travel with the team when they will be thousands of miles away from all of the backups. This will ensure they have someone already available if needed.
The distance could be a factor. And WB/S plays tomorrow night against Hershey. So if they would wait, they’d be risking Picard making it through a game where he could possibly get injured…And if they did need him in the NHL for the SJ or LA game, that obviously wouldn’t be a good thing.

You’re right he did miss a few days, though Bylsma (for what it’s worth) said he expected Letang and Staal to still be able to play tonight..
Still, this can’t bode well. Could be just insurance, but it’s unlike the Pens to re-call a guy they don’t need.
My guess- Letang’s a true game time decision. Hopefully he can go.
