Should Despres Stay?

We all know he has been playing well, but should he stay? He's young and shows lots of potential, but has he shown enough? What is you opinions?

Star-divide

He's looked confident in his own zone, and shows flashes of potential offense. Despres has already scored his first goal, and has two assists and a +-3 in just his first 8 games. If the penguins defense ever get healthy, does he deserve a spot? Also, if he does stay, the penguins depth in that position is so large that it could give shero the option of moving maybe Martin's heavy contract at the deadline to pick up a scoring winger. Or do you think they'll Kris Letang him, and let him get his 9 game stint in and then let him grow in the minors. Tuesday, against Chicago, will be a good test. He'll get to see some of the top offensive guns in the game in Kane, Toews, Hossa, and Sharp, and not to mention that is his 9th game. They might not have a choice to keep him up do to injuries and how well he's playing, but it will be interesting down the road. Either way the penguins are going to be stacked on D in the next few years with up and comer's Despres, Harrington, and Morrow.

Hell play a while but will go back to WBS once the regulars are back. He can’t be “Letang’d” because he is in the AHL not a junior team. So they can keep him as long as they want. But once Letang, Michalek and Orpik are back then his minutes would plunge or he would be inactive. Much better for him to get top minutes in the AHL then play an occasional game in the NHL. And once all healthy not sure who you would sit to keep playing him (certainly none of the top 4 D and not Engelland, maybe Niskanen ?)

Niskanen has been great this season. There’s no way I’d sit him for Despres at this current point in time or in the foreseeable future. I also agree Despres is much better off playing top minutes in the AHL than barely any minutes in the NHL with the top 4 healthy.

he’ll playing as long as needed with the Letang, Z and Martin being out. he still has options in the minors, no need to rush him and as biedergb noted, much better for him to get top minutes in the AHL

I don’t think he’s ready yet: this experience is good for his development, but in my opinion he still needs work in the defensive zone, and he needs to be quicker at making decisions with the puck. He might be with us full time as early as next season, but the roster is full this year, and our regulars will be back.

As for the give-him-9-games thing, my guess is that they will probably just use him as much as they need him, without worrying too much about that. But if he gets to the “burn a year of rookie status” threshold and then there’s a choice between him and someone else (who’s playing just as well) to call up, it’s entirely possible they’ll skip over him in favour of the other guy.

Jagr? I don't even know 'er.

A thousand times this. His physicality in the corners in his own zone really isn’t where you’d want it to be, given his size. That’s not necessarily a knock against him, either; how many 20-year-olds are ready to battle it out in the corners at the NHL level? Anyway, another season’s worth of games in AAA will serve him well; just have to get everyone healthy so that we can send him back.

too many injuries =
here for an extended time, possibly the rest of the season.

you have a clear Top 4, then Niskanen,** then Engelland.
if ALL 6 are healthy at the same time, Despres goes down.

difficulty is that having ALL of the Top 6 healthy ALL at the same time, isn’t terribly likely.
if any of them are out the lineup at any time he probably stays up.

PS
**I cannot believe I just typed that.
Wow, what an improvement from Nisky.

Even if all 6 are healthy, they would still need a 7th to carry on the roster. However, that should not be Despres, as he needs to play to develop. As long as there is a spot in the top 6, I would like to see him stay up, but if we(finally) get all 6 healthy again, then he should be sent back down to get more playing time. The more interesting scenario would be if 5 of the 6 are healthy and Lovejoy returns. Should Despres be sent down or does he play and Lovejoy fill the 7th position?

I say he needs more development in WBS, both physically (mainly due to his age) and gamewise. Overall though a very good experience for him to play this games, getting confidence and last but not least his 1st NHL goal.

He needs icetime. So, he should return to WBS when his time drops.

Still, glad he is getting a chance to play some NHL games.
