I wouldn’t make any of these trades. Nor do I think Shero will make a big splash at the deadline either. If he makes any moves it will likely be similar to the low key pickups he’s made in recent years.

Here’s the thing: the team is built pretty well, and the Pens are (most likely) going to make the playoffs. So the reasons to make a trade aren’t about cap issues or getting something for a player you won’t be able to sign in the off-season, or sparking the team with an “anyone can get traded so everyone should play better” sort of move. The reasons for a trade would have to be about strengthening some recognized weakness on the team, or giving the team a boost for heading into the playoffs.
So we’re not trading any of our core players — the players Shero has been building the team around — any time soon. If the Pens were in the midst of tanking in a season I could see a guy like Kunitz or Asham getting traded, but only if Shero could get someone in return who is going to both replace what is being lost and add whatever it is that seems to be missing from the team. And even then I definitely wouldn’t trade Kunitz for Setoguchi.
Given the current situation, and the growing pains and chemistry building that result from a trade, the only remotely possible trade, of those you’ve listed, would be a trade involving Asham. But I actually have a hard time imagining even that, since he has been filling his role on the team pretty well, at the right price.
Now suppose Shero looks at the team and sees an opportunity to bring something important to the team. You have to give something to get something, and assuming there aren’t all sorts of picks sitting around to be traded, guys on the team I could imagine being subject to a trade include guys like Tyler Kennedy (except the Cooke-Staal-Kennedy line still rocks), Steve Sullivan (if he doesn’t get things going the way we’d like him to, but he will), Dupuis (nooo!), Engelland, Lovejoy (NOOOOO!!!!), and maybe Dustin Jeffrey. There might be others, but that’s a list of trade-bait off the top of my head.
Jagr? I don't even know 'er.
Agreed. That and more.
I’m not suggesting that we trade him. But if I had to pick one of the trades listed in the post, it would be a trade involving Asham.
Jagr? I don't even know 'er.
Asham + a 3rd for Steve Ott would be highway robbery by Shero.
Dallas would reject that offer, however, and it probably would take them less than 2 seconds to decide.

All of the players he lists above suck at hockey. Even the Hurricanes are better than those dimwits. Anyone is.
Brilliant, insightful commentary if I ever saw it.

I’m stealing your idea, but for the even crazier Malkin/Cooke deal.

And if it was, our virtual Pens team would be totally screwed.

heh Malkin screwed me in gm mode going for over 11 mil a year. So I traded him for Duchene and a 2nd round. Pretty much gave me a different Malkin at half price when I re-signed Duchene for a 7 year contract. Malking then went on to win 2 Rockets with Colorado.
Only one I would consider
Martin with the small window and take with a grain of salt, emergence of Despres.
Matt Cooke and Evgeni Malkin for Brian Boyle, Derek Stephan, Brandon Dubinsky, Mike Rupp, and a first round pick.
Stepan*
Is there any way you can make this work without Cooke? Please? I’ll throw in Woywitka or something!

McDonagh* and the Rangers wouldn’t, and shouldn’t ever consider a trade even slightly similar to this one. Why trade two of the best young defensemen in the game AND a first round pick for Michalek (who I admit is a great piece) and 30 year old Paul Martin?

Paul Martin, , and a third round pick for Luke Schenn and Carl Gunnarson.
I am 50-50 on this one, I would definitely consider it
Evgeni Malkin for Corry Perry and a first round pick.
Love Geno, but I would take the cap relief and the pick, plus Perry is awesome.
Aron Asham and a third round pick for Steve Ott.
Nothing against Ash, but Ott is a higher caliber agitator, imo.
Chris Kunitz and a first round pick for Devin Setoguchi.
Seto is younger, but thats about it. Kuni is equal to Seto himself, let alone throwing a 1st in there… no thanks.
Sidney Crosby for Rick Nash and a first round pick(1st)
Sid is a Pen for life, thats it. NO DEAL.
Matt Cooke and Evgeni Malkin for Brian Boyle, Derek Stephan, Brandon Dubinsky, Mike Rupp, and a first round pick.
Not a chance in hell….
Paul Martin and Zybenek Michalek for Ryan McDonaugh, Micheal Del Zotto, and a first round pick.
I think I would take this deal…
Marc-Andre Fleury and a second round pick for Tuuka Rask and Milan Lucic.
I am a huge Fleury fan, and he’s been brilliant this year, but I would do this deal FOR SURE. Tuuka makes less and is potentially as good as MAF, and I would LOVE to have that goon Lucic on our squad.
Most seem to think these deals are ridiculous, but they might be overvaluing/attaching too much sentiment to our current Pens, cause some of these deals could really benefit the Penguins, if you ask me.
Merry X-Mas to my fellow Pensburghers!

Honestly… none of these trades will happen imo, and I agree that shero will probably not make a big move at the deadline. However, a trade for Ales Hemsky of the Oil makes sense. According to ESPN Rumor Central (which you have to take it for what it’s worth + a grain of salt), the Penguins are in on Ales Hemsky. I can see it because of the emergence of some of our great young d-men ie Bortuzzo, Strait, and Despres. When everyone is healthy (its bound to eventually happen), some quality d-men will have to sit. With the emergence of these d-men and how deep our organization is, some d-men are expendable. I could see the pens putting together a package of Niskanen, a d-prospect not named Despres or JoMo, and a role player for Hemsky. The Pens do have some leverage because Hemsky’s 4.1 mil cap hit makes him difficult to move. Also, If the Oil don’t accept, then our team is fine as is. Shero doesn’t need to go overboard.
