Despite being out for five weeks, Crosby still leads the league with 47 points at even strength.

That’s ridiculous.
Mario Lemieux is better than you.

Just imagine if Sid hadn’t gotten a concussion…how far ahead would he be?

None needed, just prorate and this is what you get:
58 Games: 45-48-93, +28
Final stats: 64-68-132, +40
No you can’t assume that.
But let’s take it that he would at least maintain the same point standard as he had last season. He would still have 43 goals right now, 46 assists (89 points) and be +23.

Yeah. :(
And although it’s unlikely, there’s nothing saying he couldn’t have poured on another 20+ game streak.
Incroyable!!!

Because I don’t think this needs its own post, and I don’t feel like discussing it at the Boston blog, can anyone tell me why in the world they traded for Chris Kelly? Are they trying to corner the market on 15 goal scorers who play poorly on the PK?
Interesting. I was about to say “they need any offense they can get, and their PK is in good shape”, but I thought I’d check the stats first. Much to my surprise it looks like Boston is 5th in the league in goals per game, while 14th on the PK. So their PK isn’t too bad, but it could be better; and their offense is apparently in pretty good shape. I guess they wanted to liberate a mediocre player from a disaster of a team. It’s like their version of being a good neighbour.
My feet are wet.
FWIW, I popped over to the SBN Bruins site earlier, and their post about what’s next on the trade front says this:
Kelly is one of the best penalty killers in the NHL, and should tighten [the Bruin’s PK] up.
I don’t know the site well enough to draw any conclusion, and in the comments section they were more interested in drooling over Kaberle, but no one objected to that rendition of Chris Kelly love. It will be interesting to check in after another month and see what tune they’re singing then.

haha they’re drooling over Kaberle?

To be fair, there were a few people in there who seemed to understand something about the pros and cons of Kaberle. But here are two of my favouritest comments:
I love the idea of a Kaberle/Chara PP tandem. Love it to death. A premium PP quarterback and the hardest slap shot in the NHL.
kaberle would be a good move. either way its bruins flyers in the conference final. no doubt.
My feet are wet.
His relative Corsi (i.e. Corsi relative to his teammates) on the PK was second-worst on Ottawa. The only reason he even looks decent is that his goalies have managed a .907 SV% while he’s on the ice on the PK, which is rather high.
His PDO on the PK was 1083, and that number tends heavily toward 1000 over time. 1083 is comically high.
So yeah. We’ll see what tune they’re singing indeed.
I feel like this is one of the more painful times in Penguins history that I remember (meaning from the 90s on). At least during the terrible years, we had low expectations. And during the good years when we fell short, at least we knew we’d be have a good chance the next year. This year it feels like we were on track for a spectacular season, with Sid winning trophies and making a strong run for the Cup, maybe even winning it. And now it’s all in shambles, and we’re uncertain about when things will be normal again, with Sid and Malkin playing like they used to play — if ever.
I’m not trying to be pessimistic, and I’m not writing off our season. I know there’s a chance that Sid will come back soon, and we’ll do well in the playoffs. And I’m not saying this is the worst season ever from a hockey perspective. I just mean that emotionally it’s a lot harder to watch your team get decimated by injuries, including very serious and career-threatening injuries to your stars, when things had been awesome before it happened. These are just such huge injuries to deal with, and it’s hard to let go of where we were on 12/31/10 and accept the new reality. It hurts to think of where we could be if those split second events hadn’t occurred.
I believe in Geno.
maybe you are being a bit too pessimistic, but I can totally understand that
emotionally it’s a lot harder to watch your team get decimated by injuries
Every time your expectations are not met and your hopes are falling apart it’s difficult to bare… and this is how it feels now really… but still getting back the all the players in good health is the most important.
You have to see it for yourself...
