Nikolay Zherdev on waivers
Should Shero make a claim if he has the opportunity to do so?

I don’t think so. He doesn’t really fit into Bylsma’s system. He is very inconsistent and sometimes looks like he doesn’t want to be out there. And people have said that about him in Columbus, New York, and Philly. So it wasn’t just one fan base saying that. I say pass Shero.

Agreed. The man has skill, there’s no doubt about that. But, he’s lazy. He doesn’t backcheck, and when he does he’s rather horrible at it. He doesn’t hit, and when he does he’s rather horrible at it.
As stated above, he doesn’t fit the system at all.

I disagree. Given that for the first time in years we have more cap space than we know what to do it, it seems like a perfect time to take a flyer on a guy like Zherdev (see what I did there?)
Besides, pre-season there were rumblings that we’d sign him first. If he’s a foul up here now, we can still waive him w/o singing the Blues.
Blah blah blah Rangers

I did see what you did there. Very nice. :)
I don’t know. I mean the guy can put the puck in the net. He’s a sniper. But even snipers have to work hard and backcheck in Bylsma’s system. When I hear the name Zherdev, I think defensive liability on occasion. But if the Pens are looking to score more goals, he could definitely help out. I just don’t know if his defensive lapses, streakiness, and lack of work ethic are worth it.

Hence we experiment. Poni wasn’t exactly Backy McChecksHard but we took a shot with him too.
You’ll never know. Zherdev striking gold with one of ours might be worth the trouble. It could be worse. We might be paying Kovalchuck to be a high offense dead weight on D.

Hahahahaha Backy McChecksHard! Love it. And you make very good points. If Shero does get Zherdev, I’d definitely give him a chance.

It’s funny, in 2003 I was pretty stoked when I figured we were going to land Zherdev in the draft. Now? I thank my lucky stars we did what we did.
I could definitely see Zherdev as a player GMRS would be interested in (a scoring winger), but as for whether or not he’d fit our system, I’m not quite sure. I suppose if he doesn’t work out, he could be a ride-along like Satan in 2009. I get the feeling Zherdev would look good beside Malkin, but we’ll not see how that works out this season…

If I had a choice between the guys you hear rumored with the pens…kovalev..stillman….I would take Zherdev over any of the them. Zherdev wouldn’t cost us anything other than salary. The pens are in a position to take a gamble on a guy like him. He has flaws to his game no doubt, but he’s got 15 goals this year in limited ice time for the flyers. Zherdev has the biggest upside I think of any of the guys the pens are looking at. I say do it, is it doesn’t work it doesn’t work no harm.
Although I’ve already stated my dislike for Zherdev.. you make a very good point. If I had to choose between trading picks/prospects for Kovalev/Stillman or picking up Zherdev off the waiver wire, I’d take Zherdev.
