I wonder how long before the ‘Matt Cooke appeals’ news comes along, (not that it might make a difference really).

PensBurgh penalty - Lavender - 2 Minutes for saying, "Woo! Offense," every time Zbynek Michalek touches the puck.

Even assuming Kunitz can play next game (which who knows) we could be looking a roster of something like:

Kunitz-Staal-Kennedy
Conner-Talbot-Dupuis
Tangradi-Jeffrey-Rupp
Wallace-Adams-Godard

Ouch. At this point I would love to see Sterling or Johnson get a callup, but to be honest I don’t know if Cooke still counts against the 23 man roster or not.

Discussing line combinations is like discussing the arrangement of deck chairs on the Titanic at this point.

by JustinM on Feb 10, 2011 9:14 AM EST up reply actions

And before anyone lays into me for being “negative” and “not adding anything to the discussion”, you know who you are…

a) don’t bother

b) The team needs to buckle down and play possession hockey. Forget pretty plays, forget stereotypical Penguins hockey. Brutal forechecking and positional defense is what will win games for them.

by JustinM on Feb 10, 2011 9:16 AM EST up reply actions

You’re not negative and even if you were, that’s your right.

Lets face it: This team isn’t going to be winning the Cup this season unless Crosby returns and gets back into the form he had. That’s not negative, just realistic.

I bought a Kadri shirt because they didn’t have Reimer and it was $33 and they wouldn’t give me a student discount because they didn’t know how to swipe the student card into the machine-thing, I predicted the score of the game, we won, I laughed at Wade Redden, I went to the place RIGHT BESIDE where they go to the lockerroom, went fangirl when Kadri came out and wanted him to sign the shirt but the security lady wouldn’t let me, my friend got the adorable mascot to sign his plush toy for his girlfriend, I sat beside Craps dude but turned him into a Leaf fan for a day, I touched Hanson’s hand twice (once when he was getting off the ice after the game, the other time when he was getting off the ice after getting first star), the bus detoured at Tim Horton’s when we were going back to school, and I spilled hot chocolate all over my Schenn jersey.

So yes, I enjoyed the game :P

I have trouble w/ Cooke in that I find him to be an extremely dirty player….but at the same time very good at his role as a forechecker/PK/3rd line guy. I would love for them to find someone similar to Cooke without the dirty hits.

Some quotes...
"It was the worst hit I’ve ever had from behind," Tyutin told The Columbus Dispatch. "I wasn’t surprised, not when you see (Cooke) in the highlights all the time for dirty hits."

The suspension is warranted…but I’m completely with Bylsma on this:

“The player looks him right in the eye, knows he’s coming and makes sure he keeps his number turned toward him,"

by PensBetterThanYinz on Feb 9, 2011 5:01 PM EST reply actions

Looks him in the eye by peeking back when Cooke is near the blueline?

Riiiiiight.

I lost a bit of respect for Bylsma after seeing that statement. Sure, he’s got to stick up for his player, but don’t be so blatantly self-serving as to offer up BS like that. That’s almost as bad as Boudreau’s crap after Cooke gave Ovie a taste of his own medicine the previous game.

I'm expecting 100% improvement from the Lions this season.

He’s not defending Cooke, nobody is at this point, he’s criticizing these numb skulls that put themselves in vulnerable positions KNOWING full well there’s a forechecker bearing down on them.

Tangradi and Wallace have been sent back down

Which means we’re looking at something like:

Kunitz-Staal-Kennedy
Conner-Talbot-Dupuis
(Asham?)-Jeffrey-Rupp
? -Adams – Godard

What are we missing? Don’t they need one or two more forwards during the suspension? Are they planning on seven defensemen or something?

Even so it’s unlike them to not want an additional forward available

Sure but is it worth that money to have them driving around instead of resting and preparing to play tomorrow?

Maybe it is, but then why not send them to Wheeling? I’m still really confused.

by Cari on Feb 9, 2011 5:20 PM EST up reply actions

If it’s a “paper-only” transaction, they don’t actually leave the team, they’re just off the books for payroll purposes for the duration of their reassignment.

I believe that they can still practice with the team.

Every dollar of cap space counts, especially as Malkin has yet to hit LTIR, which he will eventually, so the team needs to bank as much cap space as possible now.

Patron saint of quality footwear.

by fat_daddyo on Feb 9, 2011 5:25 PM EST up reply actions

My understanding is that they have to drive there and report, as Tangradi did at the beginning of the season when he was assigned to Wheeling in a paper move.

I believe in Geno.

by Cari on Feb 9, 2011 5:34 PM EST up reply actions

I believe this is correct, which does make the reassignment more perplexing. Perhaps they simply want to call up a different couple players?

by Jay32600 on Feb 9, 2011 5:35 PM EST up reply actions

That’s what I’m thinking, too. That is a long drive to turn around and come back the next day. Unless they had to get some stuff anyway (Tangradi mentioned he had nothing with him) and Pens decided to shuffle around for a bit of capspace. But, seriously, they’ve got tons of cap space now with Crosby and, soon, Malkin on LTIR. Perplexing

by SuMac on Feb 9, 2011 6:52 PM EST up reply actions

Another mystery: Tangradi deleted his twitter account.

Also, I hope there’s a good reason because if my bosses told me to spend a day driving so that they could pay me less, I would be very upset.

I bet he did it out of frustration.
Let’s face it, he’s struggled in the NHL; he looked out of place most of the time during his first stint and he looked even more lost in this last stint. He’s 21, so there’s still a lot of time, but I bet he thought he’d be a mainstay this season.

My Thoughts on the Pens & Twitter

by AllieLXXXVII on Feb 9, 2011 10:32 PM EST up reply actions

I think frustration is a likely explanation. His twitter account was very tame, and he didn’t update it very often, so I can’t imagine that the team had a problem with his tweeting. He has never said anything remotely controversial. To me his twitter account was similar to other professional hockey players’ accounts (excluding Biznasty). Infrequent updates showing a little personality but about very mundane things like the Cheesecake Factory.

But maybe he doesn’t feel like talking to, or hearing from fans right now, since he is having a frustrating season and just got sent back down again (maybe on paper, maybe for real).

I believe in Geno.

by Cari on Feb 9, 2011 10:49 PM EST up reply actions

Also, this makes me lean more toward thinking this might not be a paper move.

1) They have the cap space to keep them up.
2) They went to WBS not Wheeling.
3) Jeffrey also doesn’t have to go through waivers, and he was not asked to drive around to save cap space
4) Tangradi deleted his twitter account

I believe in Geno.

by Cari on Feb 9, 2011 10:56 PM EST up reply actions

Does anyone think this means we probably traded for someone?

and gave up some draft picks/prospects?

This is assuming it’s not just a paper move..

If they needed the roster spot to add someone without trading away NHL talent, he’d probably be high up on my list to go back down.

There's an 87% chance this post is sarcasm...

by Stros Bro on Feb 9, 2011 11:04 PM EST up reply actions

Based on twitter reports and my best guess it seems like what’s happening is this:

- Tangradi and Wallace back to WBS indefinitely
- Vitale called up to Pittsburgh
- Asham back from IR
- Kunitz still out for a few games

I believe in Geno.

by Cari on Feb 9, 2011 11:09 PM EST up reply actions

Amending to add: Since the news about Vitale comes from a friend of his on twitter, not an official source, it’s possible that there will be more than one call up announced tomorrow.

So it might be that Asham is not back, or that even if he is, Vitale and another player will be called up.

I believe in Geno.

by Cari on Feb 9, 2011 11:12 PM EST up reply actions

I wonder why Vitale

I don’t follow WBS at all, but just looking at the stats(besides the fact that he’s a center), there are better players in WBS that haven’t gotten a chance up here yet than him.

by Stros Bro on Feb 9, 2011 11:14 PM EST up reply actions

I really didn’t see it that way. I thought he looked fine in this last stint, but didn’t get any bounces, likely due to playing with offensive stalwarts like Godard and Adams while people who haven’t scored in double-digit games got first line time.

by JustinM on Feb 10, 2011 9:30 AM EST up reply actions

He might have done it because twitter is the stupidest waste of time ever…….but then again, that’s just my point of view.

by rlsuth on Feb 10, 2011 9:52 AM EST up reply actions

I guess the suspension is deserved, but I’m still a bit surprised by it. Mainly, because the NHL usually grades on the result of the hit, not the hit itself.

Cooke did get off the hook for a potentially suspendable offense against Ovechkin in the last game, though, so I doubt that helped him much in this case.

Cooke’s hit was only dirty because the player turned his back to him. At that speed how is Cooke supposed to back off. The guy saw him coming and turned his back to him approximately 1 second before getting hit. How is this dirty? More just stupid on Tyutin’s part.

Wow, what? Tyutin’s back was turned for the entire time Cooke was coming at him.

That’s true, he didn’t turn his back to Cooke, and whether he glanced over his shoulder, or not, doesn’t matter since his numbers were turned towards Cooke the entire time. He may, or may not, have seen Cooke coming, but it’s irrelevant.

I’m still pissed at Cooke for doing anything even remotely questionable. As often as he’s crossed the line, he knows where it’s at—it’s not like he can claim ignorance. It was massively selfish of him to take himself out of play like this when the team’s so short on forwards. I didn’t like him for a while after the Savard hit, but I got over it—after all, he wears that jersey with the skating penguin on it, and other teams have their pests, and I’ll certainly accept his goals and assists. It’ll be a while before I like him again.

I agree with you 100%. I say this respectfully, but those of you who mention Tyutin’s responsibility in this fiasco remind me of parents who point fingers at the victim when “their baby” is being blamed for a negative action.
