The Pittsburgh Penguin cocktail

My Cocktails with the Penguins blog, which is probably my most unusual expression of sports fandom, came about because I shared cocktail recipes to honor various Penguins' accomplishments here early last season. The recipes were about to take over the FanPosts column, and people here and elsewhere suggested that I collect them in blog form. I've done everything from a tuned-up Bloody Mary for Eric Godard to naming my favorite cocktail ever "Crosby Sucks" after my favorite player. One can literally drink a new cocktail every week using the recipes I've posted. Most of them are mine.

I kept wanting to make something worthy of being called the "Pittsburgh Penguin." There are cocktails named after the Detroit Red Wings and Dallas Stars. Several teal cocktails, such as the Sharkarita, have been invented for the San Jose Sharks. I created another teal Sharks cocktail, and decided that I really needed to make a Pittsburgh Penguin drink happen.

This is it! Should anyone else have suggestions, I'm open to reading them. However, I really loved this when I put it together last night. I share it here because it's *the* Pittsburgh Penguin, and because I'd like to give anyone who wants to make one tonight a chance to get ingredients.

Pittsburgh Penguin

1 1/2 ounce Kahlua
1 ounce cream of coconut
1 ounce Goldschlager
crushed ice

Shake all liquid ingredients in a shaker. Fill an old-fashioned glass about two-thirds of the way with crushed ice. Pour the liquid over the ice.

The content expressed in fanposts does not necessarily reflect the opinions of the staff here at Pensburgh.com. FanPosts are opinions expressed by fans of various teams throughout the league but may be more Pittsburgh-centric for obvious reasons.

Thanks for promoting the post to the front page! I’m honored.

It just really looked to me like the drink recipes were taking over that column, so I decided to link to the blog instead. I’m glad you liked them, though. I guess I’ll post again here if I come up with something really good.

9 more days until I’m legal in the states. It feels weird since I’ve been legal here in ONT for a couple years; it kinda has taken away some of the fun that comes with the traditional 21st birthday…

hey

some nice recipes on your blog!

I think I’m going to try the Crosby sucks for the first playoff round…
although it’s a bit difficult to get some vanilla coke here in bavaria (you have to go to about 6 different stores to find a lonesome bottle of that wonderful stuff ^^)

yes indeed.
vanilla coke is one of my favourites but it’s a rarity here in dortmund, too.
Oh and nice to see another pens fan from germany!

I am a smart cookie.

not to mention root beer…that is almost impossible unless you are willing to pay 2,50 $ for one can of root beer in some skateboard shop .

I can’t always find vanilla cola in NYC anymore, either. It’s just not as popular as it was. There’s nothing wrong with a capful of vanilla extract in the shaker, with the whisky and cherry liqueur, and plain cola as a mixer.

Thanks for visiting the blog—and wow, you dug deep to find Crosby Sucks! Here’s a direct link for everyone else.

My Pittsburgh Penguin’s cocktail, it’s simple – yet very hard to make.
Hah? You say. Hear me out.
First you get a can/bottle of beer, preferably something cheap and then you…now this the hard part .. you pour said beer into the Stanley Cup Bowl (hard-because you can only drink from it if you won it.) and drink ‘til your heart’s content.

Yeah, but the fans need something, too! I’m sure the Penguins themselves have all kinds of recipes involving the Stanley Cup.

And, of course, we all know what the Ovechkin cocktail is, don’t we? A White Russian without a cup. (Beloved says the San Jose Shark should be served that way, too.)

In an app on Iphone, for drinks. If you have an Iphone, and you sound like you like cocktails, is pretty good. (and free). I personally downloaded it because outside of the ordinary cockyails, have no idea, so it’s a nice reference to have.

Most excellent! Suppose someone couldn’t drink the cream of coconut. Can you recommend a substitute?

by PensAreYourDaddy on Mar 24, 2011 11:17 PM EDT reply actions

Well, I actually got inspired by something called a Panda Bear (nobody act surprised at that). The Panda Bear has milk and white creme de cacao, no Goldschlager. I used cream of coconut because I hate milk unless it’s been turned into ice cream or cheese. So maybe the milk will work better for you.

The Penguins official 2011 season cocktail…

Ingredients:
Bottle of cheap scotch
DVR

Drink straight from bottle while watching games from the November-December streak. Curse liberally. Wear Crosby or Malkin jersey for garnish.
