20 years ago today the Penguins first won the Stanley Cup
Round up of the celebrations:
A look back at the clinching game itself. Sort of lost in the 8-0 blowout is the fact that Tom Barrasso had to make 39 saves to earn his shutout. Not lost at all: Mario Lemieux's 44 playoff points in 23 games. Not half bad. [Empty Netters]

Where are they now? Amazingly, Mark Recchi's still playing (and going for another Cup!) and I hear that Jaromir Jagr guy is looking for a team too. In Russia. Or Pittsburgh. One or the other. Still interesting how many members of that team are still involved in hockey in some form or another. [Post-Gazette]

As a broadcaster still trying to land his first gig, it makes me happy knowing that not every player went into broadcasting for two reasons, the first being that just because you played the sport doesn’t mean you should be a commentator, because they’re usually dumb as shit; or they stayed in the capacity that they know, which is coaching, scouting, operations, etc. Secondly, I like that you see guys working regular jobs too, like athletes from the good old days. They played for a while and had their glory, but they always went back to the jobs they were supposed to do.
Now, why am I thinking of certain commentators on Versus?

You have to see it for yourself...
Great moment.
I remember watching these games on KBL back then. What an awesome team.

I wish I’d been watching hockey when this happened! Sadly, in Florida in 1991, it would have been quite difficult to watch most Penguins games even if I knew to do so. I’m glad that videos of highlights are available, and that so many of the people involved have told their stories.

Great night
Fortunately I was able to get the picture on the TV nearly perfect out of Canada. It really feels like yesterday watching that historic game. I’ll never forget it.
Proud fan of Pittsburgh's professional sports teams and the Pirates too.

oh yes….the memory of this lives forever in my head. I took an entire week of vacation to travel back to Pittsburgh to watch games 3 thru 6 with family and friends. after they won game 6, the mayhem on the Parkway West going to the airport was just insane with the traffic, people running up and down high fiveing the drivers stuck. the Airport was even more crazier. Didn’t get home until the sun starting to come up. what a night….
