Despres and the Sea Dogs Win Memorial Cup
From the Pens Website:
"On Sunday night, Despres netted a shorthanded tally to open the scoring just 2:24 into the final game of the MasterCard Memorial Cup tournament to lead Saint John to a 3-1 victory over the Mississauga St. Michael’s Majors of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL)."
So is everyone else as excited as I am to see him suit up in a Penguins uniform in the next year or two?

I have always been a fan of this kid and he impressed in camp last year so is it so outrageous for him to make the team this coming year? They’ll be more likely to give him another year of development, but hey if he’s ready don’t hold him back.
The biggest question mark for me is besides if he even makes the team wheter it be best for his development to play in the AHL or 10-15 minutes in the NHL cause i don’t see him cracking our top 4.

I remember watching the draft two years ago as we came closer and closer to the Penguins’ pick and Despres was still up fro grabs, so I was keeping my fingers crossed and they got him… now it seems like an even better pick.
Maybe it’s best for him playing a top role in the AHL, but I could easily see him being the number 5 Dman on Pittsburgh’s depth chart, but I guess GM RS and HC DB will know best…
One thing is for certain – he can already grow a decent playoff beard – just check out the video;)
You have to see it for yourself...
I think he’ll start in the AHL for the minutes and the adjustment to the pro game, and the hitting that comes with it. The Memorial Cup has some great hitting but nowhere near AHL or NHL level. I wouldn’t be surprised, though, to see him come to the Pens fairly quickly after gaining that experience and soaking it all in. As Tony said when he and I ‘chatted’ the same question earlier today, he may crack the line up the way that Letang did when he first came (though admittedly we did not have the top 4 D that we have now)
Hope to see him in the AHL, and eventually the NHL Penguins team, very soon! I admit that I didn’t watch these games, or follow very closely except for Twitter accounts, but I like knowing there’s some good young talent developing.

Lil’ bit.
Also,congrats to Despres.
It’s always good to have players that experienced championship play, even earlier in their careers at any level. It can only help them in the pressure situations as his careers progresses.
Is it October yet?
Completely agree with you Linda 1 st. This experience in his early years, playing in pressure situations and winning championships will help him in the future. I watched the final game, and he played an excellent game. That’s all you can ask any player, you can’t say that because he played the Memorial Cup, he is or he isn’t ready to play AHL or NHL, what is he supposed to do, all he can do is play were he is playing. He is a very good player right now, and has all the tools to be a great one, defenceman always take longer to “mature” to NHL level. Only time will tell. I ’m still looking forward to see what he can do in training camp.
