Free-agent right wing Jaromir Jagr has reached out to the Penguins about a possible return to play in the NHL with his original team, sources told the Tribune-Review today.
The Penguins currently have no comment, but were considering options regarding Jagr over the weekend. Jagr's camp reached out to the Penguins at some point over the past three days.
The Penguins are committed to around $56 million towards the 2011-12 salary cap, which reportedly will be at $64 million for the upcoming season.

LeBrun is reporting it too.
I think there is a really decent chance Jagr ends up in the NHL next season. But he is going to have to play at the rate NHL teams want to pay him. Pittsburgh likely won’t pay him more than $2 million for 1 year. I can’t see Detroit giving him more than a year and they are close to the cap also. Plus I’m not convinced he would want to play in the Western Conference. If he wants money his best bet is the Rangers or Canadiens.
If it really is down to Detroit and Pittsburgh, I can’t imagine Jagr picking Det over Pit unless their deal is significantly more favorable to him financially or term-wise and I don’t see that happening since they have needs at defense to meet that the Pens don’t.
We need a RW, he’s a RW. We have more than enough cap space to work with. He knows the city (which is infinitely better to live in than Detroit), the fans already love him, the D is solid, he can play with the best player in the world again. In short, the Pens have a better chance of winning the Cup than the Wings.

All of Jagr’s deals in the KHL have fallen apart so far, so this latest NHL talk could be mainly strategy on the agent’s part to get a better deal over there.
I think Jagr would go to DET, PIT, NY or MTL if the price was right…
But the money (and tax rate) is a lot friendlier in Russia, it would seem.

I await with baited breath. I take Shero’s denial of interest in Jagr as a full confirmation.

Yes, yes and yes!
I am not sure how much hockey sense this makes, but I don’t care. It’s JAGR! I can un-retire my Jagr jerseys! Would love to see him play one year with the Pens, then retire a PENGUIN!

I posted the rumor of Jagr return a couple of days ago. Frankly at the time I was thinking that it was a ploy by Svoboda (jagr’s agent ) to increase his negotiating power with the KHL. Rossi, is now reporting that Montreal is out. I hope Jagr takes 2 mils. and signs for the Pens. He would be great in the PP, and playing with Geno.
The Hockey Dr.
Oh man, I would love to see this. I’m not sure if he would actually work out, or if the Pens should make the effort to even bring him here… though I’m thinking he’ll stay in the KHL. He’s probably just considering his options and exploring the Pens’ interest or the NHL in general is just one of them.
Putting that aside, as a recent fan who has never seen him play live for the Pens I would be ecstatic if this happens!
Jagr Mania!!!!!!
I’m all for it. Maybe it’ll help the dog days of hockeyless summer go by quicker.
Is it October yet?

What's the highest cap hit you'd be comfortable with for Jagr?
I’m going with $3.0m to $3.5m but only because he’s the only reason i’m a hockey fan today…so i’m in a generous mood today.
generous/insane... same diff ;)
If he signs for the Pens for 3 to 3.5 million I would be pretty shocked… I don’t think there is any way Shero goes more than 2… I guess time will tell.
There's an 87% chance this post is sarcasm...
yes but it’s Jagr. I would be shocked too for the record. Shero’s been so quiet about all of this, it would surprise me if he’s got very much interest at all. Whereas Detroit has Babcock already on record as speaking with Jagr… As much as I would hate it if he ends up in Det….i’d still watch because it’s Jagr after all.
Obviously you have not picked up on Shero’s tactics. If he is negotiating with Jagr, or even thinking about it, he’s not going to tell you, on the contrary he’s either going to keep it to himself or tell the media something opposite, doing otherwise would fall into a bidding war. Shero never shows his cards, until the game is done. That’s why he is a good GM.
The Hockey Dr.
that’s a bit too much imo… maybe $2.0 to $2.5 will be OK. Of course Rangers will be quite happy to have him back for more money, but if they sign Richards
You have to see it for yourself...
Not being able to
buy Drury out of that 7 million is going to hamper the shit out of New York, in both cap and real dollar figures. If they have the cash, they’d go after Richards first, anyhow.

Wow.
The only thing I will say is that if he ends up signing with the Red Wings after this, it will be the Hossa thing times a million.
I disagree
The Pens openly went after Hossa, made it known he was their top priority and gave him a damn good contract offer and he turned us down and went to another team…
Other than them both being Euro’s, I don’t see any resemblance to Yagr if he signs somewhere else and Hossa.
There's an 87% chance this post is sarcasm...
Well, another similarity would be that he signed with the Wings…

NONONONONO
The last thing this team needs is another moody “I play my way when I want to” clown from eastern Europe. Doesn’t anyone remember how JJ was acting before he was shipped out? Petulant, whiny and a pain in the ass. Geno can get this way sometimes and I just don’t want another guy in the locker room that would add to the vibe.
Yes, the Pens need another winger. But not another washed up, moody hired gun that will skip out on the little things that make a team successful. I’d rather see old man Billy G suit up again then JJ in a Pens sweater again. Billy is a good guy to have around. Jagr is not.
Here’s Dr. Cox saying it better than me.
I don’t think Geno has that attitude with his teammates or ppl in general. Yeah he gets a little grumpy on the ice when things dont workout the way he wants and yes he takes some dumb minors but I dont think any of the Penguins would say what you just said! As for Jagr, I do agree he is moody and a little whiny but I dont see him having that attitude if he were to sign with the Pens for one year and thats all he is looking for. I say bring him on anywhere from 2 to 3M . The guy will fit perfectly with Crosby.

Jagr, came to the NHL, and the American culture at the age of 18, at 19 hw had won a Cup, and was a brilliant hockey player. But he was immature, as could have been expected of a kid transplanted from an oppressed country (Chekoslovakia was under Soviet control) behind the iron curtain. He may have been difficult to deal with, I don’t know. But I saw him play, and when it came time to play he always gave 100%, even playing injured. To say that today he is the same immature person that he was at age 18-25 is an insult to him, and an unfounded accusation. Anyone who doesn’t regret doing something at the age of 18 or 19 is either lying or is a fool. Specially when you consider the cilture shock he experienced.
The Hockey Dr.
There is no evidence that Geno gets petulant or whiny or stubborn. He does get on downward spirals of frustration and loss of confidence at times, but I’ve always felt his problem is putting too much pressure on himself and getting depressed when pucks aren’t going in. I remember what he said to Shero when he got hurt: “I’m sorry.” and also what he said when Shero texted him about playing wing, which he clearly doesn’t like, “What does coach think?”
Geno does seem to have head issues that affect his play sometimes, especially confidence issues, but it’s not fair to lump him in with whiny, petulant players who always want to get their way.
I believe in Geno.
I’ve said it in another thread but I think the Pens have learned from their mistakes with Kovalev. Or at least I hope.

This is not the same as the Kovalev trade. And what was there to learn from it? Shero would make that move over and over and over again, gauranteed! Obviously the only reason the transaction was made was because of all the cap space from Malkin and Crosby. Why wouldnt they make any effort at all to improve the team? They weren’t just gonna lay down and die!
by MrChadysPens on Jun 20, 2011 7:43 PM EDT up reply actions
I liked the Kovy trade at the time. Low risk with potential for high reward. But since the situation failed to yield high results – or any significant results for that matter – the risk that now comes with signing a former “big name” guy like Jagr comes with taking up a roster spot.
What’s there to learn from the Kovy situation? That’s a good question. I’d say that the lesson learned is that you can’t expect the same players from the 90s to return in tip-top shape two decades later. 21 years ago Jagr was a rookie. There are players in this league who were born and drafted in that span. They are now the ones currently giving guys like Crosby a run for their money (ie. Stamkos).
I’m kind of curious though – what do you think Jagr is good for producing? 50? 60 points? He had 71 points in 82 games in his last season with the Rangers (and in the NHL) in 2008.
And sure, he’s averaged about a point per game in the KHL, but which league is THE premier league here?
Put it this way: If the Pens can get him for league minimum or say, $1 mill for one season, I’ll buy it. What could he possible expect to get at this point?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com, twitter and now on the official Pensburgh Facebook page
He most certainly would produce more points, than say TK. Just playing on the PP, I’m not a guessing person, but I would say 60 points or better.
The Hockey Dr.
That I can agree with. TK’s still coming into his own, but I don’t see many (or any) 30-goal seasons in his future.
Still, is it worth giving up on a guy like TK for just one risky gamble on a player who may or may not pan out on his second trip to the rodeo?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com, twitter and now on the official Pensburgh Facebook page
TK gets no love from this blog. He had a great season, and I love his playing style. Sure it’s frustrating to watch him not score with all the opportunities he makes for himself, but at least he shoots the puck and is getting opportunities. He also has a patience with the puck that tips the ice in the pens favor whenever he controls it.
I disagree, AronV, there are not dozens of players out there that are scrappy, elusive, willing to dig in corners, drop the mitts, and shoot the puck..
Old man Billy G had 45pts on Sids wing so I would expect Jagr who has a boat load more talent to score way above that on Sids wing. Yes he is 39 but he can still play!
by MrChadysPens on Jun 21, 2011 9:34 AM EDT up reply actions
good comp
Billy G was the same age, too, right?
and i agree that Jagr would produce more
how much more, idk?
if Billy G had 45
and if Jagr had 71 his last year w/ the Rangers — a good season for him there — I think those #s are your floor and ceiling.
Yes I believe he was exactly the same age! Could be wrong though…

With all due respect Frank D, Jagr cannot be compared to Kovy. He was always a different kind of player. He also has more in the tank than Kovy did, much more.
The Hockey Dr.
I would never draw on-ice comparisons to Kovy and Jagr. Ever. But “aging, former high-flying scorer” tends to apply to both. If it didn’t work with Kovy, why would it work with Jagr?
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com, twitter and now on the official Pensburgh Facebook page
I’m with you, Frank. However, Kovy was pretty much a no-risk, no-reward scenario. They didn’t have to give up a reasonable prospect or a roster player to add him to the Pens’ roster. It’s not as if the Pens chose to go with Kovy over another player and lost out on a better option. They were merely stuck with an unproductive right winger that was paid for though LTIR dollars.
The scary part about the Jagr deal is that the Pens would have to give up a tangible asset (cap space) to sign him. I’m not in favor of letting Kennedy become a cap casualty for 1-year of a superstar well past his prime that hasn’t played in North America for quite some time, nostalgia be damned. So unlike the Kovalev deal, the difference in this would be huge risk, moderate reward. I don’t see how Jagr could be expected to score more than 30 goals this year. The last time he put up 50 goals was when he was 32 playing for the Rangers in 2005. Coincidentally, that was the last time he put up more than 30 goals in a season since then.
"Oh, buy Sam a drink and get his dog one too!" - Mike Lange
In Jagr’s defense, toward the end of his NHL career he did begin embracing the role of playmaker a bit more. Brandon Dubinsky can thank him for that. but I’m with you on the cap space/roster spot thing. That’s the gamble Pittsburgh has to debate taking.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com, twitter and now on the official Pensburgh Facebook page
Eh, IIRC, Jagr’s KHL numbers translate to about 60 points in the NHL this year. He’d be far-and-away your most potent offensive winger, especially playing beside Sid or Malkin. Guys with that kind of talent don’t come along very often, even if he is really old.

I’m all for Jagr skillwise, but does anyone think he might be a liability in the locker room? TheHockeyWriters called him potentially “toxic”.
"Those goals just rip the heart right out of your stomach." - Edzo
I think one of the owners of the team would know the truth about that statement (toxic), vs some media pundit. Don’t you think?
The Hockey Dr.
Thank You.
Jagr won’t act like a dick to Mr. 66.
by HandsofSweed on Jun 21, 2011 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions
Honestly, of all the concerns with Jagr potentially returning, his liability in the locker room is not a big one in my mind. I think he’d know his place on the team. If he can assume a role similar to that of Bill Guerin during the Cup run then it could potentially benefit the team greatly. At this point we’re still dealing with rumors though. I’ll believe it when I see it. The only dilemma is I’m not sure if I want to be made into a believer right now.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com, twitter and now on the official Pensburgh Facebook page
Correct, it’s all speculation. But if Jagr would sign say for 2 mil, which is less than what TK would settle for, I think Shero would be right to sign him. All our potential replacements are still too raw to step up, for a run for the Cup.
The Hockey Dr.
If the cap is really going up 5 million, Shero’s job just got easier, not easy mind you, but easier.
The only thing that troubles me is the Jagr attitude. There was concern about Kovy bringing a shitty attitude and nothing came of it. Kovy and Jagr comparisons are fair, they are both in their late 30’s, have amazing skill and are former Penguins. Jagr though can play a more physical game, not fighting, in the corners than Kovy can. Jagr and Sid would play well together because they play similar games. Kovy is an open ice guy who dazzles the opposition with almost unstoppable skill. The problem with Kovy is that his legs are gone and can’t rely on the other facets of his game to keep him in the NHL.
I am telling you guys, signing Jagr to a 1 year deal at or below 3 million is a good signing for the Pens.

Although with Jagr coming in and Talbot and Dupuis leaving I am worried about locker room chemistry.

I was referring to the comment about “locker room chemistry”. Not on ice chemistry. Also I don’t believe that was an issue with Jagr (or at least a serious one). Mario would know about that, right? All that has been written in the media is just that, media pundits.

I missed that...
agree with you on that one for this team. Absolutely.

Conclusion: Sign him.

Would you rather have Jagr for 3 mill or Kennedy and Dupuis for 4.5? Is that even a question?

I don’t think Jags would be an ass out there with No. 66 as your boss. I would not mind if Jags will play wings for the Pens, that position is a revolving door anyways. If he comes, I hope he plays well but if not let the boys in the minors take a shot. I think that Shero is trying to get this done, a different approach from the Hossa situation.
Regarding the locker room, i would not be concerned about it. The guys who wears the As and the C will be able to handle it, I guess.
