Dan Bylsma Wins the Jack Adams Award

Three out of four Pensburgh peeps who were in on the pre-NHL Awards predictions accurately tabbed Dan Bylsma as the Jack Adams Award winner.  All but JustinM, who will now spend the rest of the summer trying to make penance for his sins.

The interesting aspect to this season's award is that it wasn't given to a guy who managed his team from a worst-to-first record or strung together a ridiculous win streak.  While I'm sure Pittsburgh early start to the season was a consideration for this award, I believe the real clincher to ultimately send DB home with the hardware comes with the fact that he kept the team afloat in the face of two major injuries to the team's top stars.

Not only did the Penguins lose Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin to start the 2011 calendar year, but they did so and remained top contenders in the Atlantic division and the Eastern Conference.  He did it with the few homegrown pieces he had to work with and the few minor additions courtesy of general manager Ray Shero.  If that's not the makings of a Jack Adams Award winner then I don't know what is.

Here's the rest of the 2010-11 Award Winners:

Corey Perry Hart
Tim Thomas Vezina
Nicklas Lidstrom Norris
Jeff Skinner Calder
Martin St. Louis Lady Byng
Ryan Kesler Selke
Daniel Sedin Ted Lindsay
Zdeno Chara Messier Leadership Award
Dustin Brown NHL Foundation Award
Ian Laperriere Bill Masterton

Congrats to Dan and really Shero and the FO too.

All of these awards pretty much went as expected eh? I though Coture had a chance at the Calder, but Skinner played well all year too.

Congrats to Dan B, and...

…to all the players who stepped up in the absence of Crosby, Malkin, Staal, et al.

I’m happy that the award went to Danny B, but even more happy that he was unquestionably the most deserving of it. The last thing I want to hear is more Pittsburgh favouritism comments from other team’s fans.

Also, Katie says hi (idk why she can’t do this herself though)

wow..mark messier…does your head hurt.. must take alot to just pick a player from the winning teams to give your award too… how chara fits into that is a joke…bleeping bigfoot/lumberjack

The deciding factor for Mark Messier was the hit Chara put on Paccioreti. A play just like Messier would have done in his days.

i would say he fits that because he captained the Stanley Cup winner…how is that a joke? How do you feel about Matt Cooke?

Congrats to DB. Not surprised that he won, he deserved it most.

The Pens had a twelve game winning streak, which was part of a 17-2-1 run. Just saying.

by SlayerGhaleon on Jun 23, 2011 5:48 AM EDT reply actions

Yes I know, and I made mention of that but he also did that with his healthy superstars. But I think the real deciding factor is how he managed the team without his big guns.

Well Deserved

but it doesn’t excuse the multitude of coaching mistakes that were made during this year’s playoffs.

Engo and Tanger2 needed to be in the lineup for games 6 and 7, I fear DB’s hubris is why they weren’t.

Kovy and Talbot needed to be on the ice for the last 90 seconds, not Letestu and Conner. I fear DB’s love of loyal soldiers is why that happened.

I wonder what DB thinks about Jagr coming back, my gut is telling me that DB is against it so don’t plan on JJ being a Pen again.

How does DB probably never have even met Jagr fit into him not wanting him back?

I really dont think that Bylsma would have a problem saying he didnt feel a player would be the right fit for the team, after saying this I dont believe Danny B is a liar either so I doubt he would have said what he said about Jagr over the last few days about a possible return to the Penguins! Bylsma is on board for a double J reunion.

by MrChadysPens on Jun 23, 2011 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions

And rightfully so as a Neal – Crosby – Jagr line would be pretty scary even if Jagr is 39. The guy can still play.

by MrChadysPens on Jun 23, 2011 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions

IMO, Jagr needs to go with Malkin instead. Crosby’s game is all about speed and Jagr doesn’t really fit that. Now Jagr on the half board with Crosby and Malkin on the PP will be fantastic to watch

by AronV on Jun 23, 2011 10:56 AM EDT up reply actions

This is what DB said:I envision a guy coming back to the NHL with a high amount of motivation," Bylsma said Wednesday in Las Vegas. “He doesn’t need to. He could probably make more money somewhere else, but he’d be coming back to prove he could play in the league and to win a Stanley Cup. And to think of a guy who scored 75 points his last year in the league, and then you see him in the world championships be outstanding. … His work ethic is high and the leadership is there, and that’s a real intriguing factor to think about the possibility of adding him to your team.”

That is a good point. At the Olympics and Worlds he’s been one of the best players. And do not forget the difference in rink size and conditioning needed to play in Europe/Russia which can only help the aging Jagr.

Congrats Disco, more than well deserved!

Amazing coaching, great personality and people skills, hard work, family values and a great staff helped him win it.

John Haynes also won AHL coach of the year for WBS.

John Hynes, who at age 36 is the youngest coach in the AHL, won the league’s coach of the year honors Wednesday. As a rookie head coach, Hynes has led the Baby Pens to the best record in the AHL.

Yes, the Pens and the Leafs (in "92), are the only team to ever win the coaching award at both levels.(NHL and AHL). Tremendous.

Contrats to HCDB

very classy acceptance speech too, thanking everyone and deflecting the spotlight off of himself. We are blessed to have him as our coach. It’s time to start lobbying for Jagr!

Disco Dan! I was so pumped when I saw them announce his name. Great job.

As for the rest of the awards, I can’t complain, except for the Calder and Hart. I think the other two rookie nominees have a much better game than Skinner has or ever will have.

And Perry for the Hart? Ya, way to go guy; once again, if Sid hadn’t gotten hurt, Perry wouldn’t even be close to a quick thought for this award.

Interesting, what makes Grabner better than Skinner?

by AronV on Jun 23, 2011 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions

You know, I can’t think of a clear answer. To me they are both very similar, just that if I were picking a team, my gut tells me to go with Grabner before Skinner.

Grabner is 4 years older than Skinner.

I know he’s older. Did you know Skinner was originally a figure skater.

Did you know that Wayne Gretzky was also a figure skater?

Brian Trottier also did figure skating. It’s a method used by many hockey players, to learn power moves. Also the Pens skating coach is a woman, who learned figure skating. Don’t read into doing that any more than what it is.

There is a difference between being a hockey player and taking figure skating lessons to increase your power, correct your stride, so on and so forth, and being the Asian kid from Mighty Ducks 2.

There’s definitely a case for Grabner over Skinner for the Calder. Lighthouse Hockey laid it out pretty well and their conclusions are solidly based in evidence, not homerism.

Another thing – I thought Carlson, Subban, and Fowler were all more deserving than Skinner, but if I knew anything about hockey, I’d be in it.

Of the three candidates, Perry was the most deserving (although, I’d have made a case for Getzlaf if he’d stayed healthy all year) – he was in much harder defensive situations than Sedin and delivered just as well.

Doesn’t stop me from hating on the dude, but he was definitely the rightful winner.

Even Caps’ fans (really, we’re not crazy) know that Crosby was the run-away winner if he’d been able to finish the season. Sid was likely on the way to putting up one of the ten or fifteen best seasons ever once you adjust for era.
