Penguins Offer Contract To Jaromir Jagr, Expect to hear answer tomorrow
Will Jaromir Jagr once again be taking his talents to Pittsburgh?
We will probably find out on Wednesday. All the major media outlets have confirmed that Ray Shero and the Pittsburgh Penguins have extended a one-year contract offer for Jags to re-join the team that started his NHL career. Says the PG:
"We feel from the information we have and after seeing at world championships, that he's a guy who might be able to help us this coming season," Shero said. "We feel he's a guy who could help us this year, and retire as a Penguin."

I started watching the Penguins in 2006, so I missed Jagr the first time. I was impressed by what I saw at the Worlds. More seasoned Penguins fans on Twitter are going so crazy and holding out so much hope. I really hope Jagr sees just how welcome he would be if he returned, and just how heartbroken he would leave most Penguins fans if he declined. He has the chance to end his career very badly or very beautifully. May he choose wisely.

According to Rossi, he’s hearing that Jags was offered a fair price by the Pens. I think we’ll be hearing tomorrow morning that Jags is coming home…
Also: does it seem to anyone else that the Pens are the only team right now? I haven’t heard anything out of Detroit in a week and nothing out of Montreal, except reports of interest.

My Thoughts on the Pens & Twitter
I think Detroit’s management is listening a bit to their fans. No one here in Detroit wants him to sign with them. That’s ok – they can watch Sid hand the Cup off to Jags in ’12.
The Lions are going 10-6, and there is nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.
The Red Wings fan I married says the Penguins can have Jagr, and from Red Wings forums online, I got the sense that most feel about the same way. For sure, no Red Wings fan wants him as badly as any Penguins fan.

Funny thing is, no Detroit fan I’ve talked to has called him old.
The Lions are going 10-6, and there is nothing you can say to convince me otherwise.
He’s 39; the Red Wings’ fans don’t want their team to waste good money on some Czech kid with almost no experience. (And being 37, I get to make that joke.)

Hey Girl, it’s been a while. How are you doing?
I’ve been following Jagrwatch on twiitter and seen you’ve been right into it.
Is it October yet?
I’ve been doing well. How have you guys been around here?
LOL to say that I’ve been right into it is probably an understatement.

I’m worried about what the “fair price” is. Rossi may have been told the Pens offered what they thought was fair, but Shero’s been cautious and seemingly the one going slowest on this. Not sure if what he thinks is fair is fair to JJ.
But then again, maybe it is.
"Game's the same. Just got more fierce."
To be more specifc, Rossi is saying he heard in the area of $2M. I would call that “a fair price.” The real question is, is that a fair price to Jagr? I would hope so.

By all indications, that seems like a fair price. He’s said he’s play for the league minimum because he owes it to Mario. His agent says it’s not about the money. He says he wants to be back in the NHL.
Time will tell, I guess, how true his statements actually were.

Yes, but they want Jagr to give them his decision by tomorrow so that a “handshake deal” can be reached and they can officially sign him on July 1st.

This is smart move by Shero, imo. That way, he’s free to do the work he needs to early on July 1 and he won’t have to worry about Jagr.

Right. They’ll know Jagr’s plan by tomorrow. Nothing’s official until the pen meets the paper and it’s turned into the league, but given JJ’s connection to Mario and the Pens, if he says he’ll sign tomorrow, then I’m sure on Friday it’ll be official.
And, if he decides he wants to go another route, at least Shero and the Pens can still jump into free agency and try to sign a scoring winger that route.

Getting closer, looks like it’ll be done. Can’t wait for Jagr to score a goal at the Consol and listen to the crowd and Mike Lang. Too bad we don’t have John Barbaro around. But somehow they could insert a recording.

# 68 ??????
not 2 sure ??? #68.WOULD LOVE 2 C IT. BUT,BUT. does not fit into new NHL.U HAVE 2 BACK CHECK.he .should play for FREE. .last 2 yrs w/PEN,S..was a CRY-BABY.took the BIG $$$$ and SUCKED.ran out of town…NOT 2 SURE..
His age is what I’m a little worried about.
However, his willingness to adapt has never been an issue & neither has his back checking, as far as I know. He adapted well with the Rangers, not sure why this would be any different.
If anything, it’s the Pens style of play that you should be worried about. But I don’t see why Jagr and Malkin can’t have their own style of play as one of the best 2nd lines in hockey (if not the best…).

I also found this interesting at the end of the Tribune..
“In other news, Shero has made contact with unrestricted free agent Arron Asham about returning to the Penguins. Shero also spoke with agents representing Mike Rupp and Tyler Kennedy about possible contracts.”
http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/penguins/s_744275.html#ixzz1QcgtjMR7
It is interesting. I wouldn’t make too much of it though. It’s got to be either Rupp or Asham and everybody knew he was talking to Kennedy. I expect Kennedy to get signed either by Friday or shortly there after. I expect to see Rupp and Asham on the open market.
by StripesForLife on Jun 28, 2011 9:52 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, we knew about Kennedy but the Asham information is interesting. I figured he would be as good as gone.
Asham is a darn good player. And he plays RW; an advantage over Rupper who is a LW like Jeffrey, Tangradi, Neal, Kunitz, Cooke……
Pref is still prob Rupp, but would be great if they could sign both

Asham’s issue was health. Not his problem he had some nagging injuries this year, but players of his ilk are a dime a dozen. I’d welcome Asham back, surely he’d be near minimum wage and we’ve all seen he’s a valuable NHL player when he’s healthy.

I would guess strongly that if Kennedy doesn’t sign by free agency, he’s gone. It’s a weak FA class and he’s a 25 year old player coming off a 20 goal season. The money will be there if he waits for it.
But if he wants to come back to a solid team where he’s already entrenched and all his buddies, he might have the chance to do that. We haven’t seen what Shero’s offered, except for knowing it’s obviously a lot less than TK’s agent thinks he is worth. Don’t see shero blinking too much, and if Shero really wanted to keep Kennedy above all else, he wouldn’t have allowed the player to hit the open market on July 1.

No money was released. Believe to be in the $2 million range which is fair for both sides.

I hope there's a clause in the offer that acceptance is conditional upon Jagr growing his hair out

does nobody remember how he fell out of and left the league to begin with a coupe years ago? Now you think he will come back and turn it on?
I loved Jagr, and even liked him more than most caps fans during his tenure with us (up until he completely stopped trying to play) But I just don’t see this as a good idea or anything more than a Gimmick.
What is giving you guys all this hope for Jagr to bring anything to your team? And I mean this in the most inquisitive way possible, not in a negative way.
When Jags left the league in 2008, it sure as heck wasn’t because he was lacking skill. He put up 71 points. And I guess you didn’t watch a whole lot of his play during the Olympics or other international play, he’s definitely still a force. Not sure about your implication that he’s sucked ever since leaving the NHL.
He’s wanted here because he’s one of the best players in franchise history and now he has a chance to make a last run at the Cup before he calls it a career. Plus, the Pens DO need right wingers…only wondering but at price, I don’t see anyone close to as good as Jags on the free agent market. Tell me how JJ getting signed makes the Pens a worse team than without him?

I did watch the Olympics, limited time watching the czech team – other than the replay of the Ovechkin hit on Jags.
My point wasn’t to rile you up, I just seem to remember him getting a little pouty in NY and leaving the league, just like he got pouty in WAS and left the caps… If that’s the image he’s trying to fix, more power to him…I just didn’t know why you would really really want it to be your team he comes to.
but it seems its the nostalgia and hope that he might bring out some of the Jags of old. Sounds good, I hope to see one of the greats shine one more time with you

By the way, any chance that Jagr’s return would bring back the übercool TRIANGULAR LOGO? (See my pic) ^_^;
the dirty bird/pidgeon logo? i really wish they would make it their alternate jersey
We have to unify and watch our flag ascend!
i never liked the dirty bird logo. just my personal taste. i think the diagonal Pittsburgh lettering would be the best 3rd jersey

mixed emotions. if he brings solid production (around 70 points) and improves our PP throughout the season, then it’s a good deal. Jagr’s attitude still worries me, and I wonder how he’ll fit into Bylsma’s system. but, as always, in Shero we trust.
Whoa. I don’t think anyone should expect him to put up 70 points.
40-50 and 20 goals would be fabulous and that’s the ideal number for me.

I’m expecting him to put up nearly a point per game. I am, however, not expecting him to play 82 games. So that’s 60-70 points for me. Even Mr. bobblehands can put up 40 points playing with Sid.
Robert Vollman sez:
Jaromir Jagr’s last NHL season, age 35:
82 GP, 25 G, 46 A, 71 PTS
NHL Equivalent of his 3 KHL seasons, pro-rated to 82 games:
82 GP, 26 G, 41 A, 67 PTS
He’ll be turning 40 in February
Timo Seppa sez:
Pittsburgh Penguins
The hole: Top-line winger
No team heads into 2011-12 with a bigger question mark than the Pittsburgh Penguins, who are one healthy Sidney Crosby away from vaulting themselves back to championship contention. But whether the concussion-plagued Crosby is ready for the beginning of the season or not, Pittsburgh’s hole remains the same: a true top-line winger to complement its captain or pick up the slack until he’s able to return. Ideally, we’re talking about a veteran right winger who can improve the Pens’ perennially struggling power play.
The fix: Sign RW Jaromir Jagr, UFA (12.8 GVT in 2007-08)
He’s 39 years old, three seasons removed from his last NHL campaign, and has donned the colors of the Washington Capitals and New York Rangers more recently than the black-and-gold of the Pens. That said, Jaromir Jagr is a slam-dunk future Hall of Famer, former Pittsburgh captain and two-time Stanley Cup winner. Further, he posted a respectable 71 points in his final NHL campaign and in the 2010 Olympics proved that he could still hold his own against the world’s elite. Based on his 42 points in 51 games in the second-best league in the world (Russia’s KHL), a 60-point season would be well within reach for the Pittsburgh legend. And if Jagr could duplicate his 4.65 PPP/60 from 2008-09, he’d instantly make himself the Penguins’ best option on the man advantage.
As per Rob Rossi, Jags is on a flight to NY, will arrive 3:00 PM. Announcement expected at that time.
