Friday Hockey Headlines: Evgeni Malkin's Conditioning, Islanders Jerseys
- They may not have a new arena, but it looks like the Islanders have a new third jersey. Not bad looking in my opinion.
- As if the Florida Panthers needed a reason to not invite hockey fans to games, they now guaranteed themselves at least one empty section on game nights.
- You thought the Pens were bad on the power play last season? Well, they were. But Japers Rink breaks down how the Capitals didn't even get many power-play chances to begin with.
- The Post-Gazette has a nice feature on Evgeni Malkin and how he's starting to understand what it's like to condition yourself during the offseason.
- Sean Avery arrested for allegedly pushing a cop last night at his Hollywood home. Ruh-roh.
- We know former Penguin Paul Bissonnette is the Twit-king, but based on per minute play, he's also the NHL's hit king (with a nice assist to whomever does the stats out in Phoenix).

Those Islanders jerseys look amateurish.
Those Southern teams are trying everything to get tickets sales. Remember Atlanta’s attempt of their mascot going on a high speed chase through the city?
And good for Geno! I get a funny feeling in my pants when I think about how determined he his to burn the league down this coming season. (TMI?)
_______
Yeah I don’t like those Isles jerseys either. Too many teams wear black as it is.
Oh well, at least it won’t be the worst jersey in franchise history (Kasparaitis sighting!)

"You come at the King, you best not miss."
I've always had a soft spot for the Gorton's fisherman's jersey
Can’t say why but I always have. Now the Isle’s 3rd jersey, that’s just awful. Too much plain and too much blah.

I dunno, I like the new third jerz.
Follow the Penguins on SBN @ Pensburgh.com, twitter and now on the official Pensburgh Facebook page
I agree w/Frank
I think they are nice
Although, I’m not a fan of any jersey with the shoe string on the collar….
There's an 87% chance this post is sarcasm...
I like the fisherman logo better than their current logo. At least the fisherman logo is unique, rather than generic.
This.
Plus I liked it because they made a very old man look intimidating and scary. But people didn’t like it because it looked stupid and corny. You want to talk about a awful jersey, the Kings “street gang” 3rd jersey from 95-96 tops it all.

Here...

It’s the jersey in the middle.
But it’s not as bad as the 3rd jersey St. Louis camp up with in the mid 90’s. It was so horrible looking Mike Keenan threatened to quit over it.

The Panthers
Were so desperate to get people into the building that they were running a promotion on discounted tickets to away team’s fans last year. Also I think the Panthers tarp off certain section in their arena. Jesus.
by Bradley James McEachern on Aug 5, 2011 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions
They tarped over a large part of the upper bowl for many games, but not all. They are trying to do away with the tarps this year.
You have to give them credit for trying anyway. Besides – beach by day, hockey by night. That should be a marketing tool too.
It's always a great day or night for hockey - no matter the time or place!
Very amateurish!
I don’t like them at all! Although I hate anything with the colour Orange, no matter how little!

Maaan… Florida!?!
How much more do we have to put up with the nonsense of this “organization”… relocation can’t come soon enough for me.
You have to see it for yourself...
Has the Panthers ever talked about relocation?
When I used to go in LGP.com they used to always include the Panthers when talking about teams relocation but I actually never any offical news on the matter. If anyone’s relocating it’s the Yotes.
Plus it don’t matter if the team averages 5 fans a game. The NHL with Winnipeg set a precedent that it dosen’t matter what teams do attendance wise, as long as they can find a owner to own struggling franchises that’s fine with them.
by Bradley James McEachern on Aug 5, 2011 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions
Yeah I’ve never heard anything official about the Panthers moving or even considering a move. It just makes sense, that’s why it keeps being brought up with fans.
I’m not sure where you’re getting at with the Winnipeg comment. As I understand it attendance was never a problem there, ownership, and other factors, was. Besides, the arena is pretty much guaranteed to sell out for at least 5 years.
I know the reasons why ATL moved to Winnipeg
But during that whole process, Bettman repeatedly stated that attendance dosen’t matter in relocations, relocations will only happen if they can’t find a buyer to keep the team in said city. One of the reasons why ATL moved to Winnipeg. That’s what I was getting from that comment.
by Bradley James McEachern on Aug 5, 2011 11:44 AM EDT up reply actions
Ah fair enough. I think it’s great that the NHL shows loyalty to their fan bases by doing all they can to keep the teams in place.
Well people say that Bettman didn't do what he can with ATL
I disagree. ATL was a lost cause because of all the money they were losing and the fact they couldn’t find a serious buyer to keep the team there. Plus Bettman had to bust his hump regarding Phoenix because the team is owned by NHL. But tell that to the ATL media.
by Bradley James McEachern on Aug 5, 2011 11:51 AM EDT up reply actions
As you said, there was no buyer in ATL, despite the team being for sale for years. Meanwhile there was a buyer Phoenix, at least until the Goldwater Institute meddled and ruined that. Bettman did as good a job as possible with either franchise, imo. I don’t begrudge him trying to keep the team in Phoenix, particularly not when there was a buyer who would keep the team in town. There was no such thing in Atlanta, so the team had to be moved. Just as Phoenix likely has to be moved now, due to no buyer.
Regardless of the facts, or the situation, people will always dislike authority, particularly when it comes in the package of a little weasely looking lawyer. If the situation had been reversed, with Phoenix moving and Atlanta staying put, people would have complained about Bettman. If neither had moved, people would have complained about Bettman. If both had moved, people would still have complained about Bettman. It’s a pathetic lose/lose situation. But that’s part of the reason he makes as much money as he does, because it’s an impossible job.
If you think the Goldwater Institute is the party responsible for the problems in Phoenix you need to re-read the situation over there.
The Goldwater Institute I think had the right to scare people off, especially with the deals that were being talked about involving potential buyers. And the guy that started Black Berry or whatever, I think he was scared away by Bettman and his constant dancing around the decision. None of those deals from any buyers seemed to be too fair to the actual city, which is what the GI was most concerned about.
If both teams had moved who would have complained about Bettman? The 5 fans from Atlanta and the 4 fans from Phoenix? As opposed to if both teams don’t move ALL of Canada is pissed raving mad!?! lol
Trust me. A lot of people would find a reason to complain. Not just Phoenix and Atlanta fans, but all those people feeling the NHL owe the fans of various franchises some loyalty. Besides, people will complain about Bettman just because he’s Bettman, they don’t need a good reason.
Thats not true. Who is upset that Atlanta left for Winninpeg? Sure there are the Atlanta fans from Atlanta. But how many Atlanta fans are there that didnt live in Atlanta? Not that many. And why would any hockey fan who wants to see the league do well and not waste excellent NHL talented teams in cities that just dont give a damn about hockey want to see the NHL try everything in their power to keep the team in a failing market? That wouldnt make any sense.

I think you’re misunderstanding my point. I don’t think there are a lot of people outside of Thrashers fans who are upset at the move. But people will still COMPLAIN about it. My comments were rooted in the fact that some people were complaining about Bettman not going as far to help Atlanta as he did with Phoenix. My message was that people will complain, regardless of whether it’s justified or not.
For sure there will always be people complaining, no matter what the outcome or who is in charge but there is now a lot less people complaining since Atlanta moved to Winnipeg then there was when they were there losing heaps of money and playing in front of 200 fans nightly. But yes ppl will complain no matter what and there will always be someone who is unhappy with the situation, whatever it may be!

Haven’t heard anything about relocation of the Florida team, but I wish I had…
Also… on your Winnipeg point… yeah, the MTS Centre will be the smallest NHL arena, but it’ll be packed and rocking each and every game which is far superior than the half-empty arenas in Florida or Phoenix…
You have to see it for yourself...
Florida isn’t going anywhere. Neither is Phoenix. I believe that Phoenix has a good shot of finding local ownership.
I would worry more about Dallas at this point, that is not a good situation down there now and it is not getting a lot of buzz – but they may be the next Phoenix before anyone else. Don’t know what their lease situation is, but that is always part of the issue when you look at buying into a team.
It's always a great day or night for hockey - no matter the time or place!
Regarding Phoenix
Not really with the lawsuit by the goldwater institute. That scared off alot of potential buyers. If it wasn’ for them, Matthew Hulsizer would be owing the team right now.

Keeping it short
Nice jerseys on the Island.
Lol at Florida, or more accurately lol at the comment.
QQ out of DC? What a surprise.
Yay Geno!
Avery involved in controversy? That never happens.
Gotta love Biz.
