Winning the Cup without Crosby
I was having a beer after work tonight and the first thought that entered my mind was "Man, I miss Sid, he didn't deserve this..." And those thoughts continued...and even now as I type.
Is it possible to win the Cup without 87? Can Geno carry the load?
I personally think so....buuuut we might need to add another scorer.
Your thoughts, please...

Can’t believe you would say that. The Cup is way more important, and I would take it over any individual player. At least for this year, and if it was a year by year basis, I would take the 10 Cups over 10 years of Croz.
Maybe thats just me.

@ 8.7 Sid’s a bargain.
No matter how you cut it- be it one player and any combo of players, you’ll will never get an equal, let alone more value for 8.7 million than you get from Sid.
Is it October yet?
Of course you wouldn’t, but it would still free up cap space for adding a player (or ten) at the deadline. It was a theoretical question based on a worst-case scenario and I was just throwing an option out there that I feel would improve the team, and give them a really good chance at the cup even without Crosby. You’d need two, or even three, Doans to replace Crosby. And even then it’s iffy, because Crosby is Crosby.
I think you could, but with only the absolute best deals (Letang, Giroux, Carlson, Nielsen, Thompson, for example).

Really? Generational as Crosby is, those guys are all elite at what they do, and you’ve got four guys who can play at an All-star level and probably win some awards in the near future (Norris, Selke).
Put another way, the first four can give you GVTs of 10 each, Thompson can probably give you 5. That’s 45. The only guys who’ve exceeded that are Gretzky, Lemieux, Orr, and Hasek (if memory serves; more recently, Miller hit 38).
Marketing and sales is another issue—Sid probably reaps in more revenue total, so it makes sense to take him from a business point of view. But to win a Cup, you need stars, and you also need depth, and a combination of the absolute best value contracts give you both.

“Elite” in the second sentence is probably too strong a word. Letang, Nielsen, Giroux, and Thompson are all elite at what they do, I’d say, but Carlson isn’t quite there yet.
