Very deep, at least. Thiessen, though not mentioned, had a great game. Hopefully he won’t be needed (because it means there’s an injury) but if so, I’m pretty confident that he’s an NHL capable goalie and can win some games.

Johnson is a very good backup, but I suspect this is his last season with the Pens (unless Thiessen completely implodes this year in WBS).

I agree. And Johnny will be 35 years old after this season and has a history of nagging injuries. Probably Thiessen time, and he’s proven to be very capable at each opportunity.

I saw parts of the second period, but this team looks scary good. Geno is playing like a man possessed. We know what to expect from most others up front.
Morrow looked impressive as well. I really like this kid a lot and hope he gets a shot in the first 10 games of the year.

Morrow’s talent and promise is clear, but he’s not polished. You can tell his decisions with the puck aren’t quick enough, he’s not physically strong enough and he’s not assertive enough for a regular season game.
Imagine if you play him in the opener and one of the top defenseman goes down with an injury. Would Morrow be good at a regular shift for the rest of the game? Especially when it counts against a full throttle NHL regular season. I woluldn’t be comfortable with it.

Agree, no need to “burn” this kid with tremendous talent. Let him get some experience in WBS.

I think he’ll go back to the juniors

No he can’t go back to the AHL, he has to return to juniors if he’s eligible.

Presumably he would be the 5th or 6th defensemen. So if one of the top guys went down, I would be comfortable using him in some added minutes to finish out a game early in the season. I’m not saying he should stay around more than 10 games (unless he proves he’s more than worthy), but if Orpik isn’t ready to go I would give him a shot. Remember he can be sent down at any point before those 10 games, so if a longer-term injury occur and more stable guy he can be sent down.

Pleased that the Power Play opportunities are being taken. Looking like contenders already and Sid is yet to feature. It could be a very successful season if we build on a great start.
