Both players delivered questionable hits in the game today and could face supplemental discipline. What say you Pensburgh readers?

UPDATE - both players will have hearings tomorrow.

To be fair they should both be suspended. Ovie (repeat offender ) should receive the biggest suspension. However don’t hold your breath.

i’d say no suspension to either of them. maybe a game for either, but with no injuries and both hits being borderline, I say both get away with a fine or phone call.

One of my fondest memories of childhood was sitting with my father, watching Dale Hunter pound another players face into the ice.

The whole “no injury” playing into effect is the dumbest bullshit. Unfortunately, they do come into play.

Let's grind these bitches down!

Oh, of course. Last night’s Zetterberg hit was a 2 min minor maximum, but because the player went down, he gets 5 and a game.

Suspension for Ovie

Fine for Michalek

how you figure? just repeat offender status?

I’m for suspensions for both. i believe (i might be wrong) that is would be Michalek’s first time, so maybe he might just get a fine. however, Shanahan hasn’t exactly delivered the consistency we all hoped for, so who knows?

by mcnulty4prez on Jan 22, 2012 7:58 PM EST up reply actions

yeah. i just think both were borderline, and neither seemed particularly malicious (i don’t think either was an attempt to injure)

Right. I’d personally let them both go because neither was egregious, maybe a fine, but certainly not a suspension.

agree completely.

And given that PK Subban slew foots with only a fine, I’d be shocked if either of these plays generated something more from the league.

yeah. like it or lump it, you’ve got to hammer a guy to get a ban.

the hit by Ovie was far from borderline……he left his feet and hit Z in head…..

My guess would be fine only for both

that’s not even true. he left his feet, but principal contact was shoulder. take off the black and gold glasses, check again.

Both players are the same height. A shoulder to shoulder hit was completely obvious without him leaving his feet.

First off, that sentence makes no sense. Second, check over in the post game thread at japers rink, someone did a great screenshot. Sows clearly that while his feet do leave the ice, the hit is shoulder on shoulder.

by wildcaps on Jan 23, 2012 1:39 AM EST up reply actions

How does it not make any sense? My point was Ovy was going to make a perfectly fine, big shoulder to shoulder hit by simply keeping his feet on the ground. Want to talk about intent to injure? That’s the clear line between intending to injure clean and intending to injure outside the rules.

And I did watch it closely multiple times, to make sure my assessment was fair. Go to Puck Daddy (I think they got the link from NHL.com) and pause the video at 15s. The red stripe on his shoulder makes contact with his head a split second before the rest of him goes body to body.

by lostprophetRJX on Jan 23, 2012 10:28 AM EST up reply actions

The initial contact is to the shoulder, but it’s a graze. the head was definitely the primary point of contact.

@wildcaps: In OP, I was saying what I think WILL happen. Not what SHOULD happen.

But as far as justification: Ovie is a repeat offender, and he clearly leaves his feet. That’s probably what Shanny will say anyway.

I don’t think either hit was intentionally harmful … I doubt most NHL players ever intend to injure another player.

I think Subban’s slew foot from the other night was far more dangerous.

I’d be really curious to hear what Subban’s teammates think of him.

I remember reading about an incident in Montreal (http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Hockey/NHL/2011/02/08/17202236.html) regarding Subban and Hal Gill. Apparently Subban has a habit of just leaving his crap everywhere after a game and expecting the staff to pick it up, clean it and pack it for him. After one such game, Gill picked up his jersey, threw in PK’s face and said “your an asshole”. Immediately after, he turned to a reporter and said “you can write that”…seems like this isnt the only time this crap has happened, or else he wouldn’t have specifically told the reporter to write on it

Fines for both

Ovie would be more likely to receive a suspension, and if Don Cherry were in charge of this he would be suspended for 2years and forced to play in the Siberian hockey league. But both were borderline hits. Certainly fine-worthy. Neither over the top reckless, just too aggressive. NHL 2008 they were both “clean hits”

by biedergb on Jan 22, 2012 10:48 PM EST reply actions

because no one was injured, I’d say fine for Z, maybe a 1-3 game ban for OV and a ten game suspension for Cooke

by NoVAPensFan on Jan 23, 2012 12:17 AM EST up reply actions

Make that 20 game suspension for Cooke. Just because Crosby is a diver.

Five? Really? You’re saying the hit is as bad as the Rene bourque elbow in backstrom? (sorry to pick a caps-centric example, just fresh in my mind.)

One of my fondest memories of childhood was sitting with my father, watching Dale Hunter pound another players face into the ice.

by wildcaps on Jan 23, 2012 1:40 AM EST up reply actions

No, I think the Bourque elbow was one of the most disgusting things and he should have gotten 8-10 for it. I’m saying that seeing as Ovy is a multiple repeat offender, he deserves five. I think that’s perfectly fair. Now by some retarded CBA standards, you get a clean slate every 18 months. But I personally think that’s stupid.

Let's grind these bitches down!

by lostprophetRJX on Jan 23, 2012 10:30 AM EST up reply actions

Z’s hit was definitely an elbow, but in this case, Z didn’t do anything wrong imo. Hendricks went into the boards crouching a little bit, making himself more vulnerable to a dangerous hit. Had he went in straight up, Z’s check would have been clean. Some of the responsibility is on the player getting hit.

Ovechkin left his feet to elbow Michalek, plain and simple. I’m sick of seeing him get away with his reckless hits.

by Clank Brimsoy on Jan 23, 2012 1:45 AM EST reply actions   1 recs

Yes, Hendricks was in a vulnerable position, but it could just as easily be said that that’s all the more reason not to make the hit in the first place.

Both should be suspended. Michalek probably two games. Ovi’s hit doesn’t seem all that different from Engelland’s a while back, so he should get the same three games that Engo got.

by PensAreYourDaddy on Jan 23, 2012 9:22 AM EST reply actions

Alex Ovechkin – 5 Games.

Yep, that might seem harsh, however, keep in mind several things. First, Alex leaves his feet for the hit, 2nd, he targets the head, and 3rd, it can possibly be construed as charging… thats 3 no-no’s on this one play. Not too mention that Z already moved the puck. Also consider that his meeting with Shanaban will be his 3rd disciplinary hearing in 18 months, and the 2nd for charging…

Zbynek Michalek – Fine and/or 1 game suspension.

I know I risk ‘homer’ taunts here, but I must say that Michalek plays a very clean game and a hit like this is uncharacteristic of his play. While Michalek makes contact to the head, note that Hendricks is quite low already, so I don’t think their is an intention to target the head, though it did happen. Since he would be classified a first time offender, I would let Zbynek off with a fine or if necessary, a 1 game ban.
