DENVER CO - FEBRUARY 16: Jordan Staal #11 of the Pittsburgh Penguins puts a hit on Paul Stastny #26 of the Colorado Avalanche at the Pepsi Center on February 16 2011 in Denver Colorado. (Photo by Doug Pensinger/Getty Images)
All of this comes one day after Staal turned down a ten year, $60 million dollar contract from the Penguins. At one year away from unrestricted free agency, the Penguins couldn't afford to take the risk of watching him walk next year for nothing.
Huge trade that will rock the foundation of the Pens for years to come. On one hand, they have to deal one of their best players. But, on the other hand, they couldn't play with Staal going to unrestricted free agency.
Stay tuned for more fallout through the 2012 NHL draft.
