Not a whole lot going on that is Pens related, so I decided it's probably easier to just sum up the previous two days (monday and today) into one tidy little mini recap. I'm banking that nothing happens between now and tomorrow morning, but knowing my luck, it'll probably go down right as I sit down to dinner with my fiancee. Oh well....
Baby Pens lost Colin McDonald, Brandon DeFazio, and Bryan Lerg. HOWEVER, we also got Trevor Smith who produced at around a point per game at the AHL level. So maybe overall this signing makes the baby pens better.
Around the NHL, it seems that all of the replacements for Suter and/or Parise are out the window. Hudler signed with Calgary, Bryce Salvador re-signed, so it looks like if we miss out on Suter (and I think we will), Martin will remain a pen.
The only thing really of note with the Penguins is Parise watch, so I will give my treatise on it now. The clubs who are rumored to be involved are us, NJD, Minnesota and Chicago and maybe Philly. Also, the Nordiques reportedly put in an offer as well according to something called "Hockey Insider". Also according to them, Parise was a lock to sign with us, then he was a lock to sign with Chicago. Then he was making his decision monday. Then monday night, maybe. You get the idea of how Parise Watch has descended into madness. I can only imagine this decision making him want to pull his hair out. The guys getting married and wants to start a family, so it's not just "where do I want to play" but "whats the best fit for my family?"
He's a loyal guy so I can only imagine the guilt trip Lamoriello must be putting on him. That said, he's from Minnesota, his dad played and coached the Minnesota North Stars. He went to school nearby at North Dakota so we can't underestimate the lure of being the prodigal son returned. Plus Minnesota will make the biggest commitment to him and likely build their team around him. In Pittsburgh, he will be another piece of the puzzle; the winger we finally got for sid. I gotta say, the longer this drags out, the less likely I think he will sign here. I don't think he would drag this decision out and string along his hometown team only to bolt for the burgh. I really hope I'm wrong, because I couldn't imagine a wing being a more perfect fit for us. Unfortunately, I really hope Shero has a solid plan B like maybe a trade for Bobby Ryan, especially since Jiri Hudler signed elsewhere. Also, are we really talking about Semin? Seriously?
