Pens Points Monday: Fleury Still Hoping for Sochi

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sport

Two best Canadian goalies so far this NHL season: Josh Harding and Marc-Andre Fleury. Will either get a nod? Reto Berra will be going to Sochi. Craig Anderson OK after scary collision. And what are the Lightning doing atop the standings?

From Dave Molinari at the PPG, Marc-Andre Fleury is still hopeful his early-season good play will earn him at least a consideration for one of the three goalie spots on the Canadian Olympic roster. Flower is playing well, but the Canadian goalie pool is very muddy right now, with most guys expected to vie for one of the three spots somewhere between .915 and .930 SV%. Josh Harding is at the very top but he doesn't have much int'l experience and they may or may not worry about his MS flaring up.

He backstopped Switzerland to a surprising silver medal at the World Championships earlier this year (watch him shut out USA in the semis), and he hopes to repeat his standout performance in Sochi. In the meantime, Reto Berra made his first NHL start for the Calgary Flames last night against the defending Stanley Cup champions in a stellar fashion, stopping 42 of 44 shots on the way to a 3-2 win. Watch him rob Patrick Sharp with a pad save. The other Swiss rookie playing for the Flames, Sven Baertschiwill also be going to Sochi, and the Swedes and Czechs better take notice.

Craig Anderson is OK after leaving on a stretcher following a collision with Valery Nichushkin, He was replaced by Lehner, who took the Sens to a shootout with the Stars, won by Dallas 4-3. Nichushkin also scored his first NHL goal in that game, so 7 of the top 13 picks in the 2013 draft have now all scored at least one goal this year.

Josh Harding stopped all 19 shots the Devils threw at him on the way to a 4-0 Minnesota win. I think this is written in Minnesotan, but you'll get the gist of it. His second shutout and 6th straight home win of the season. [Here's a serious article in English.]

The Habs will need a revamped defensive corps next year as they only have three guys under contract beyond this year. PK Subban (RFA), Andrei Markov (UFA), Francois Bouillon (UFA), Douglas Murray (UFA), Raphael Diaz (UFA), and Greg Pateryn (RFA) will all hit some form of free agency, so THW looks at Marc Bergevin's options and choices he'll have to make.

And don't look now, but the Tampa Bay Lightning are sitting atop the Atlantic Division standings. How did that happen? Weren't they supposed to be fodder for padding the points total for the "real" teams in that division?

Have a great Monday everyone.
