Evgeni Malkin injured against Panthers

Charles LeClaire-USA TODAY Sports

Reigning league MVP Evgeni Malkin takes scary spill into the boards and his head snapped back violently in the third period of a Penguins 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers.

Scary moment in Pittsburgh tonight even Evgeni Malkin left injured after crashing into the boards in the third period of the Penguins 3-1 win over the Florida Panthers.

Malkin was pushed by Panther defenseman Erik Gudbrandson when the two were even at the goal-line. Malkin was carrying a lot of speed as he drove into the offensive zone and fell backwards into the boards. It seemed like a routine hockey play until Malkin's head snapped back violently upon impact. He would remain down on the ice.

Malkin was attended to by Penguins trainers before skating off under his own power. Josh Yohe, the beat writer from the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, reported that Malkin appeared to be walking not in a straight line when he immediately went from the ice back to the lockeroom.

Malkin would not be seen again for the rest of the game, and as of yet the team has not announced any status for him. Injury details are always vague, so we'll just hope for the best and that Malkin isn't as seriously affected by this as it looked.

We'll keep this page updated as news breaks.

UPDATE: From Dan Bylsma tonight, Malkin is getting "further evaluated this evening. We'll know more tomorrow." So predictably little is known right now. We'll see what comes of this.
