There has been a lot of speculation about the Penguins interest in trading for Jarome Iginla should Calgary make him available. Personally I think Jarome Iginla is a perfect fit for this team right now and could contribute to more than the offensive power of the team. However, the Pens obviously need some adjustment to their defensive game in some manner. Calgary might have more to offer in a trade than just Iginla.
One name that stands out to me on Calgary's roster is Cory Sarich. To be honest, I haven't seen enough Calgary games to see how he plays, but he's had solid career stats as a physical, defensive d-man. From what I have seen, he seems to be the kind of gritty, nasty d-man that can help stabilize a d-core. Although he hasn't played a playoff game since 08-09 with the Flames, he's won a Stanley Cup in 2004 with the Lightning. Most importantly, his salary is only $2 million. I originally thought he was an Unrestricted Free Agent at the end of the year, but he has another year on his contract after this year.
I think a trade like this is very possible and could provide what the team needs. I'm hoping for something like:
Iginla and Sarich for (player), (defensive prospect), 1st round pick
Players: Tyler Kennedy, Dustin Jeffrey, Simon Despres (hope not, but they seem to be shopping him).
Prospects: Derrick Pouliot, Joe Morrow, Olli Maata, Scott Harrington, Brian Dumoulin
It's a lot to give up, but there's a price to pay for winning a Stanley Cup. Sometimes you just have to go all in. Thanks for reading, let me know what you think and who else is out there that you'd like the Pens to trade for.
