Pens draft center Jake Guentzel in 3rd round

Charles LeClaire-US PRESSWIRE

The Pens take a talented but diminutive offensive player in the third round of the 2013 NHL draft.

The Pens also added "Guentzel was named USHL "Rookie of the Year" after finishing 6th in league in scoring with 48 points (20G-28A) in 25 games".

Mnhockeyprospects says of Guentzel:

Guentzel is very creative around the net as his approach is unpredictable, not tipping whether he is passing or shooting. His shot is very deceptive as he releases it from many different angles and with great accuracy. Guentzel demonstrates soft hands with an ability to receive passes cleanly and distribute with equal effectiveness. Guentzel is a good skater and possesses excellent acceleration. Guentzel’s biggest flaw is his size (5’9,150) and his inability to play a physical style game adds:

He was selected to compete in the 2013 USHL/NHL Top Prospects Game in January, dishing out one assist and finishing the night with a game high plus-two rating to help Team West earn a 2-1 victory. Guentzel was recently listed as #80 among the top North American skaters in the NHL Central Scouting Final Rankings, up from #114 in the Midterm Rankings in January. It represented one of the largest jumps in the rankings of any player eligible for the 2013 NHL Draft. The forward is committed to play collegiate hockey at the University of Nebraska-Omaha following his USHL career.

Guentzel will be college teammates with another Penguins draftee, rising junior Josh Archibald, a former 5th round pick in 2011. Archibald has developed into a serious prospect in the past couple years and we'll see if Guentzel can do the same.

Finally, because it's 2013 and the future is awesome, here's his highlight reel. He looks pretty good, as you'd expect in a highlight reel, showing off some nice hands and creating a lot of offense with the puck on his stick.
