After much speculation that the Pens would attempt to trade Defenseman Kris Letang around draft time than rather sign him long term, they went another way. Ray Shero decided to lock up the Norris Trophy finalist for 8 more years with a contract that pays him a total of 58 million (ironic because Letang wears number 58). The defenseman who led not only all of the Pens defensemen in points but the entire NHL's defensemen in points (tied for first with PK Subban in points, even thou Subban played 7 more games) will apparently be staying in the steel city for several years to come. After his playoff blunders many Pens fans (including myself) called for his immediate departure, but how could we after the season he had and the flashes of talent he has shown. After all how many 26 year old Norris Trophy finalist defensemen do we get a chance of signing long term each year? What Shero has done is secure the Pens future, not only with this long term signing but also with Crosby and Malkin's long term signings. Shero has given us Pens fans 3 cornerstones to build around that will continually give the Penguins a shot at reaching the playoffs each season. They may not win the cup every year, but they will be right there with the rest of the top NHL teams.
