Dupuis is now officially a penguin for the next 4 years! He gets a well deserved 15 mil with an almost identical cap hit with Kunitz at 3.75 per. At first my reaction was "whoa, that's too much money", but here is where I'd be wrong.
1. He's Earned It. He's outplayed his contract ever since being liberated from Hockey Hell (Atlanta). He's formed an incredible chemistry with Sid and plays a tough physical forechecking style that fits Bylsma's system to a T.
2. He's Durable. Yes, he's 33 but I honestly can't remember the last time he missed a game due to injury. He's played 70+ games every year he's been here (except for the lockout which he played a full 48) so even though he plays physical, his body can take the punishment.
3. The Line, Elwood, The LINE! This deal now ensures the best line in hockey is locked up for the next 4 years and that just makes me smile. Kunitz, Sid and Dupes will continue to dominate so long as Sid can stay healthy.
4. The Intangibles. He's a true Pittsburgh transplant. All 9 of his kids (something like that) are in Pittsburgh schools and from seeing 24/7, this is where he wants to be, which is awesome. We need more good guy role models for the community and in the locker room and I couldn't think of a better guy than Dupes. Seriously, I can't stop smiling!
So now in this one offseason Shero has locked up 2/3 of the players that he identified as the "core" for the next 9 years, and locked up the two best complimentary players for Sid for the next 4. I know alot of us aren't happy about the Letang deal, but honestly, he's getting paid like the top 5 defenseman that he is, which isn't a bad thing. Plus, he has only a limited no trade clause (and could still be moved before next summer if he gets stupid). Not a bad job for Sugar Ray Shero. So at the end of the day, we have the core components of a Stanley Cup
contender locked up for at least the next 4 seasons and probably beyond. It might not be the sexiest offseason with our only addition being Harry Zolnersomething, but it works in my book.
