Penguins training camp 2013: Team split into three groups, hints at future lines?

Geoff Burke-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins have been split into Groups A, B and C, showing which players coaches are considering playing together at least for the beginning of training camp.

From Dave Molinari at the PG, here's the three groups the Pittsburgh Penguins have been split into

Group A

Group B

Group C

It makes a lot of sense, Group A is the defensive minded group, featuring the Paul Martin- Brooks Orpik shutdown pairing and the third line components of Brandon Sutter and Jussi Jokinen with candidates to fill out the line in Dustin Jeffrey, Matt D'Agostini and Chuck Kobasew.

Group B is a lot more offensive with the team's top line of Chris Kunitz - Sidney Crosby - Pascal Dupuis leading the way. Kris Letang and likely partner Rob Scuderi are also in this group, as is the probable 4th line of Craig Adams - Joe Vitale - Tanner Glass. And, it's interesting, of all the bubble forwards we spotlighted yesterday, only Jayson Megna is in this group, showing he probably has the first chance of the new guys to make his mark.

Group C is pretty thin once you get past the possible 2nd line of Beau Bennett - Evgeni Malkin - James Neal. The biggest intrigue of this group is the guys who will likely be in competition for the 3rd pair of defense, as Matt Niskanen, Deryk Engelland, Robert Bortuzzo and Simon Despres are all in this group, as is impressive under-ager Olli Maatta.

Molinari also points out that Saturday's free and open practice is supposed to be Group A vs. Group C, but don't worry Pens fans Crosby and Letang will also be involved in the practice, giving fans a chance to see some of the stars in addition to the camp fodder.
