Old Guys VS New Guys Part 2 : 10/26/14

Welcome to part 2 of the Old Guys VS New Guys where I take a look at what some of the old Pens from last season are doing on their new teams as well as a look at the new guys the Pens picked up for this season. If you want to see part 1, click here.

Here are the stats before any games have been played today(10/26/14).

Part 2 Stats

Brian Gibbons has been injured for the Blue Jackets and was recently activated and sent to the BJ's AHL affiliate Springfield Falcons. In 5 games for the Falcons, Gibbons has 1 goal and 1 assist and is a +2 with 3 shots on goal.

I got to watch a few minutes of the Calgary Flames - Washington Capitals game last night and go to see some of our old pals make impacts on the game. Brooks Orpik stepping up for one of his patented open ice checks, and my man-crush in Deryk Engelland wiffing on a pass that lead to the Caps 1st goal of the game. Engelland is playing the 5th most minutes for the Flames when he plays, but was a healthy scratch a few games already this season(the Flames have already played 10 games, Engelland 7). For the Caps, Matt Niskanen and Orpik are logging the 2nd and 3rd most minutes on the team. Orpik's PIM are a little out of the ordinary for him with 12 in 7 games. He only had 46 all last season. He racked up a couple roughing penalties this season. We'll see if that continues. Niskanen is having to compete with John Carlson and Mike Green for power play minutes, but is getting his share. I bet in 2 weeks when I do this again, that I'll be able to add a goal or two to his statistics.

Geno's BFF, James Neal has had probably the best game of anyone on this list so far this season, single-handedly beating the Chicago Blackhawks 3-2 with a natural hat trick, one of his goals being a beautiful one timer from the top of the left circle; we've seen that before. Unfortunately for Neal, he's a T-2nd worst on his team in +/- and he's been called for 3 penalties so far. Last time I did this it looked like Patric Hornqvist was going to run away with this competition(Neal VS Hornqvist), but Neal has come back and made this a real game.

Tanner Glass and Joe Vitale are doing about what was expected of them... they are a combined -8 and have 1 assist between the two playing 4th line minutes. How they were both able to get more than a million per season is beyond me... then again, Engelland got almost 3 million a season, so what do I know...

So far it looks like GMJR has done a good job. Points wise, the new Pens have matched the old Pens in scoring, in 24 less games... granted the Pens are a Cup contender, while the old pens are spread amongst teams that I would consider lesser teams.
