Olli Maatta has been one of the best rookies in this NHL season. Through training camp to cracking the roster due to Kris Letang being injured, Maatta has proven himself that he is able to play in the NHL. From scoring his first NHL goal against the Canucks, to Maatta scoring on a Penalty shot against the Wild, he has shown everyone he can play at this level. Now I would've been the first person to say that I didn't think Maatta would have made it this far into the season, but he has proven me wrong. With that being said Olli Maatta has showed me that he has been one of the best Pens D-Men all year. Not only can Olli Maatta defend well, he has added an Offensive side to his game.
Maatta's many talents, if you have seen Maatta play you know that he can play a good defensive game. He does make mistakes but he is only a rookie, but other than those mistakes he has had a flawless year when it comes to his offensive game. Maatta's 6 goals, 17 assists for 23 points, rank 2nd out of the rookie defensemen. Out of all the rookies Maatta's 23 points rank 13th out of all rookie scoring. Maatta's defensive game can be called outstanding, because it really is. For a 12 game span that Maatta played on the top D pairing due to injuries the Pens went 10-2 and only allowing 3 or more goals once. That's a pretty impressive stat. Maatta has been averaging around 18 minutes of time on ice for the season, that's good enough for 21st out of the rookies. Maatta's plus minus is +12 on the season, that's good for 9th. Needless to say Maatta should be considered for the Calder.
