Prospect Playoff Update - April Edition

Claus Andersen

A look at the Penguins prospects in the juniors, college, and Europe through the 2014 playoffs.

A number of the Pittsburgh Penguins prospects have already joined the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins on ATOs as their seasons have finished up, and we fully expect more to join them by the end of the month. The end of the regular season updates for our NCAA prospects and our Major Junior prospects are available for those that want to look back on how they did prior to entering the playoffs.

Major Juniors

Derrick Pouliot and the Portland Winterhawks swept the Vancouver Giants 4 games to none in the 1st round of the WHL playoffs and are set to face the Victoria Royals starting this Friday. Pouliot had 1 Goal, 5 Assists, and a +3 in his first 4 playoff games. His Goal and 2 of his Assists were scored on the PPHis 6 Points are 2nd amongst all WHL D so far and his 5 Assists are 8th amongst all skaters.

Matthew Murray and the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds beat the Owen Sound Attack 4 games to 1 in the 1st round of the OHL playoffs and are set to face the Erie Otters starting this Wednesday. Murray had a 4-0-1 record with a 2.38 GAA, .918 Sv%, and 1 shutout through his first 5 playoff games. He is currently 6th in GAA, 5th in Sv%, and tied for 1st in Shutouts.

Matia Marcantuoni and the Kitchener Rangers failed to qualify for the playoffs, so he has been in WBS skating with their Black Aces squad, although he has not played in any games.

Clark Seymour and the Peterborough Petes are actually still battling through the 1st round of the OHL playoffs. They had been down 3 games to none and looked like they were heading home early, but have since come back to tie it up 3 to 3 and force game 7 tomorrow night. Seymour has 1 Goal, 3 Assists, and a -1 in his 6 playoff games thus far. His Goals and 2 of his Assists were scored on the PP. Oddly enough, he is currently the top scoring D on his team and 7th amongst all OHL D.

UPDATE - Peterborough won Game 7 in OT, they are now headed to the 2nd round to face the Oshawa Generals, their first game is this Friday.

Tristan Jarry and the Edmonton Oil Kings swept the Prince Albert Raiders 4 games to none in the 1st round of the WHL playoffs and are set to face the Brandon Wheat Kings starting this Thursday. Jarry had a 4-0-0 record with a 2.25 GAA and .918 Sv% through his first 4 playoff games. He is currently 6th in GAA and 7th in Sv%.

Jean-Sebastien Dea and the Rouyn-Noranda Huskies beat the Quebec Ramparts 4 games to 1 in the 1st round of the QMJHL playoffs and are set to face Baie-Comeau Drakkar although the schedule has not yet been announced. Dea had 4 Goals, 2 Assists, and a +4 in his first 5 playoff games. 1 of his Goals was scored on the PP and another was scored Shorthanded. His 4 Goals are tied for 10th in the QMJHL and at 76 for 146 his 52.1% faceoffs is good for 3rd.

Europe

Alexander Pechurski and the Mettalurg Magnitogorsk beat Admiral Vladivostok 4 games to 1 in the 1st round of the KHL playoffs and then went on to sweep Sibir Novosibirsk 4 games to none in the 2nd round. They are set to face Salavat Yulaev Ufa in the East Conference Finals starting this Thursday. Not surprisingly, Pechurski has not been required to play as of yet.

Oskar Sundqvist and Skelleftea AIK beat HV-71 4 games to 1 in the 1st round of the SHL playoffs and are set to face Linkopings starting this evening. Sundqvist has 1 Assist and a -2 while going 8 for 17 in faceoffs during his 4 playoff games.

NCAA

Bryan Rust and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish got eliminated from the NCAA playoffs after losing to St. Cloud State in OT this weekend. Rust had 5 Goals, 2 Assists, and a +7 through his 6 playoff games. As a Senior his NCAA career is over and he could be on the verge of joining WBS on an ATO.

Josh Archibald and the University of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks lost to Denver in the NCHC Quarterfinals and he has since been playing with the WBS Baby Pens. Archibald had 1 Goal, 1 Assist, and a -2 through 5 playoff games. However, since joining WBS he now has 1 Goal and a +2 through 3 games.

Scott Wilson and the University of Massachusetts-Lowell Riverhawks got eliminated from the NCAA playoffs after losing to Boston College this weekend. Wilson had 2 Goals, 3 Assists, and an even 0 rating through 7 playoff games. 2 of his Assists were scored on the PP. As a Junior he has to decide whether he plans to finish out his NCAA career by returning next season or drop out now to turn pro as Archibald did, which would allow him to sign an ATO with WBS.

Theodor Blueger and the Minnesota State-Mankato Mavericks got eliminated from the NCAA playoffs after losing to UMass-Lowell this weekend. Blueger had 1 Goal, 7 Assists, and a +4 through 7 playoff games. 3 of his Assists were scored on the PP. As a Sophomore it is highly unlikely that he will be dropping out to turn pro this year.

Sean Maguire and the Boston University Terriers lost to Notre Dame in the Hockey East First Round. Maguire did not play in that game. He will be returning to BU for his Junior season next year where he will presumably resume splitting starts as the co-starter in their platoon goaltending system.

Jake Guentzel played with Archibald at UNO, scoring 1 Goal, 5 Assists, and an even 0 rating in 5 playoff games. He is just a Freshman, so it is all but certain that he will return to UNO next season.

Ryan Segalla and the University of Connecticut Huskies lost to Robert Morris in the Atlantic Hockey Quarterfinals. Segalla had no Points and a -1 through 2 playoff games. He is just a Freshman and needs a good bit more time developing in the NCAA.

Blaine Byron and the University of Maine Black Bears lost to Providence in the Hockey East Quarterfinals. Byron had 1 Assist and an even 0 through 3 playoff games. He is just a Freshman and as such will return to Maine next season.

Dane Birks and the Merritt Centennials were swept by the Penticton Vees in the 1st round of the BCHL playoffs. Birks played just 1 game and had no Points. He will be moving on to the NCAA to play for Michigan Tech as a Freshman next year.

Troy Josephs and the Clarkson Golden Knights lost to Cornell in the ECAC Quarterfinals. Josephs had no Points and a +1 through 6 playoff games. As a Freshman who needs a lot of work still he will most certainly be returning to the NCAA next season.
