Inspired by Natasha, and because I'm bored.
Dan Boyle, who recently had his rights traded to the Islanders, is most likely not going to sign with them. He said he would let them know by the end of the week. He carried a 6 mill straight cap hit last year, and he says he wants to play for a contender. Are the Penguins still contenders? Is it worth talking to come July 1? I'm going to say no if management is sticking to their guns about giving the young blue liners more responsibility.
The Oilers are definitely willing to be sellers, but again, the offering is rumored to be a defenseman, something the Penguins don't need, but the Leafs may be forward sellers.
David Staples of the Edmonton Journal considers the possibility of the Oilers acquiring either Nazem Kadri or Jake Gardiner from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Staples reports that the Oilers could have interest in both players to improve the team and mentions that both played under Oilers head coach Dallas Eakins with the Toronto Marlies. However, Staples believes the price for either player will be too high for the Oilers unless the team decides to make a "major effort" by offering Nail Yakupov,David Perron or their first round draft pick.
Speaking of prospects, a young Russian by the name of Nikita Scherback has been getting a lot of attention, but another name is Jiri Sekac of the Czech Republic. Sekac would be a free agent, and it's rumored that as many as 12 teams are interested in him. Here is a piece Lighthouse Hockey wrote about him. As mentioned, the Jets may have a strong draw for hte young Czech because he hails from the same town as Pavelek and Frolik.
Finally, you knew it was coming... for all of the goalie supporters out there, Kevin Woodley of InGoal Magazine was on the June 9 episode of Marek vs. Wyshynski and he goes a little bananas on stats, positioning, everything. Give it a listen.
